To add a border to one image, select its Image block in the WordPress editor, open the block settings sidebar, and use the available Border controls to set the outline. If those controls are missing—or you want a consistent style across images—your theme’s support and styling options determine the next step.
Add a border to one image in the editor

Open the post or page and select the image. This activates its Image block.

If the settings sidebar is hidden, select the settings icon beside the Publish or Update controls to show it. WordPress describes this sidebar workflow in its Border & Shadow Settings overview.

In the Image block’s settings, find Border and choose the properties your editor offers, such as color, width, and radius. The Image block can also offer shadow settings; the available styles vary by theme, as described in the Image block documentation.

Preview the image in the editor and on the published page to check that the outline looks as intended in both contexts.
Radius controls round the image’s corners; radius alone does not draw a visible outline. For an outline, set border styling such as width, style, and color where those controls are available.

Why the Border controls may be missing
The active theme affects which border controls WordPress exposes for a block. If you do not see them, check whether the settings sidebar is open and the Image block is selected. If the controls still are not available, consult the theme maintainer or use a theme-appropriate custom styling method. The Theme Handbook explains that settings.border determines which border controls a theme makes available; it does not itself define the visual style: Border – Theme Handbook.

Apply a theme-level style
Use theme.json for theme design
Theme developers and site owners maintaining a block theme can style the core/image block through theme.json. WordPress’s documented example sets a 6px radius and generates .wp-block-image img { border-radius: 6px; }. That rounds corners; it is not a complete visible outline. Use CSS for a simple outline
A basic rule for Image block images is:

}The core Image block reference identifies .wp-block-image img as a border-related selector: Image – Block Editor Handbook. This selector is broad: it applies to Image block images site-wide. To style just one image, use a more specific selector and a way to scope it in your theme or block setup. Where to add custom CSS depends on the site and theme, so there is no universal place to paste this rule.
