Choose an AI writing route
For AI features inside WordPress, the two documented options are the official WordPress AI plugin with a provider connector, and Jetpack AI. Choose based on whether you want to configure an AI provider yourself or use Jetpack’s integrated assistant.

Use the WordPress AI plugin for connector-based features
The plugin uses configured connectors to provide features such as generating featured images, alt text, titles, excerpts, and other content. You install the plugin and a provider connector, then supply credentials and enable the features you want. See the plugin listing and Connectors documentation.
Use Jetpack AI for an integrated assistant
Jetpack AI can draft text, transform existing text, translate, change tone, summarize, and expand content. Its documented tools also include content images, titles, excerpts, and feedback. Check editor compatibility and site requirements
- WordPress AI plugin: Use the Block Editor. The plugin does not support the Classic Editor, is marked experimental, and is recommended for evaluation in staging before relying on it on a production site. WordPress plugin listing
- Jetpack AI: The site must be connected to Jetpack, and the AI Assistant Block requires the Block Editor. If the feature does not appear or work correctly, a theme or plugin may be interfering with the editor. Jetpack compatibility documentation
Set up the WordPress AI plugin
- Open Settings → Connectors. Install the WordPress AI plugin and a provider connector. The available connectors and setup guidance are described in the Connectors screen documentation.
- Configure provider credentials. Add the API key required by your connector. WordPress says keys can be supplied through an environment variable, PHP constant, or database setting. A key entered through the Connectors screen is stored as a database setting and masked in the interface, but it is not encrypted. Restrict access to the site and its database accordingly.
- Open Settings → AI. Enable AI and choose the features you want to use. Which features are available depends on the configured connector and plugin setup. Plugin listing
Because the plugin is experimental, evaluate it in a staging site before using it for production work. The plugin itself is free, but API usage is billed according to the provider’s terms and may cost money; check that provider’s current pricing rather than assuming the plugin includes AI usage. Set up Jetpack AI
- Connect the site to Jetpack if it is not already connected.
- Confirm you are using the Block Editor and that the AI Assistant feature is available for your site.
- Check the relevant feature settings for writing, image, AI SEO, or other feature groups. The controls and availability can depend on Jetpack version, active products, and plan. See Jetpack’s AI settings guide.
- Review the current request allowance and plan terms in Jetpack’s documentation or account before relying on a particular feature. Free requests and paid plans are documented, but quotas and prices can change. Jetpack AI documentation
Give the assistant a bounded task
AI tends to be more useful when the request defines who the content is for, what it should accomplish, which facts it may use, and what it must avoid. Start with a small task such as outlining a post, clarifying one paragraph, drafting a title and excerpt, or translating a passage.
For example, you could prompt: “Draft a 600-word first version for new WordPress users explaining how to prepare a post outline. Use these three verified steps: [steps]. Use plain English, label any assumptions, and do not invent statistics or quotes.” This is an example prompt, not a product feature or a guarantee about the output.

Review AI text before publishing
Treat generated material as a draft, not as evidence. Product documentation explains what the tools can generate; it does not establish that the output is factually reliable.
