Laravel is usually better for a custom web application whose data, permissions, business rules, or integrations must be designed specifically for the product. Neither is universally superior: WordPress is a CMS and publishing platform, while Laravel is a PHP framework for building applications.
The right decision depends on what the site must do, who will maintain it, and how much custom software you are prepared to build and operate.
WordPress and Laravel solve different problems
WordPress is an open-source publishing platform built on PHP and MariaDB and licensed under GPLv2. Its official project description emphasizes publishing and usability for people with limited technical experience. WordPress.org also states that WordPress is used by “over 43% of all sites across the web”; that is the project’s own statement, and the cited page does not provide a measurement date or methodology, so it should not be treated as an independently verified current market-share estimate. WordPress.org About
Laravel 13 is a PHP framework. You build the application around its conventions and components rather than installing a finished CMS. Laravel documents full-stack applications rendered with Blade or Inertia, as well as API backends for JavaScript and mobile clients. Its documentation also covers authentication, database access, queues, email, and notifications. Laravel documentation

That distinction matters more than a checklist of features. WordPress gives you a working content system that you configure and extend. Laravel gives developers the structure and tools to create a system tailored to a particular workflow.
Choose WordPress when publishing is the core job
Content teams need a usable CMS
Choose WordPress when staff will regularly create pages, posts, landing pages, news, documentation, or media and should be able to do so through an established administration interface. Editors can work within a CMS-centered workflow instead of waiting for a developer to implement every routine content change.
The site follows familiar website patterns
WordPress is a strong starting point for company sites, blogs, magazines, campaign sites, informational directories, and other projects whose primary output is published content. Themes, plugins, and the core administration experience let a team assemble a conventional site and extend it as requirements grow.

You want a managed hosting path
WordPress can run on ordinary PHP hosting. WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended, although the project notes that any server supporting PHP and MySQL can work. WordPress requirements
WordPress-specific hosts may add installation or pre-installation, backups, updates, and developer tools. Those are possible provider features, not a recommendation for any particular company. WordPress hosting documentation
Choose Laravel when custom application behavior is central
Your data model is unique
Laravel is the better foundation when the product revolves around bespoke records, relationships, roles, approvals, calculations, or state changes that do not fit naturally into a standard page-and-post CMS. Examples include operational portals, marketplaces, booking systems, subscription software, and internal tools with domain-specific rules.

Workflows and permissions need to be designed around the business
With Laravel, the development team can create the exact screens, validation rules, authorization model, background jobs, notifications, and integrations the application requires. You are not limited to adapting an existing editorial model, but you are responsible for designing and maintaining the resulting system.
The product needs an API or multiple clients
Laravel can serve a web interface and expose an API for a separate JavaScript front end, mobile application, or other clients. This is useful when the application’s behavior and data are more important than a prebuilt publishing interface. Laravel documentation
WordPress vs. Laravel at a glance
| Decision axis | WordPress tends to suit | Laravel tends to suit |
|---|---|---|
| Main job | Publishing, pages, editorial content, and familiar CMS workflows | Custom application behavior, bespoke data, workflows, or an API backend |
| Editor experience | A ready-made content workflow with modest technical setup | A custom editorial or admin workflow designed and maintained by the project team |
| Development model | Configure and extend a CMS-centered platform | Build an application around framework conventions and project-specific code |
| Operations | Use a host that meets current PHP, database, and HTTPS recommendations | Plan PHP extensions, web-server routing, permissions, caching, optimization, and production settings |
| Best decision test | Is the site mainly content that staff need to publish? | Does the product’s value depend on custom processes or application logic? |
These are practical inferences from the platforms’ official descriptions and deployment requirements, not performance tests or a cost study.

Hosting and deployment requirements
WordPress requirements
For a new WordPress installation, target PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later, and HTTPS. The requirements page says older PHP 7.4+ and MySQL 5.5.5+ versions may still run WordPress, but labels them end-of-life and potentially vulnerable. Running an obsolete runtime to preserve compatibility creates a maintenance and security risk. WordPress requirements
Laravel 13 deployment requirements
Laravel 13’s deployment documentation lists PHP 8.3 or later and the framework’s required PHP extensions. Production configuration must direct web requests to the application’s public/index.php, grant the application write access to bootstrap/cache and storage, and apply the documented optimization and cache commands during deployment. Laravel deployment
Set APP_DEBUG=false in production. Laravel warns that exposing debug output can reveal sensitive configuration and other application details. The deployment process also needs a correctly configured web server, reliable environment variables, scheduled work or queue workers where the application uses them, and a plan for updates and rollback.

Security, speed, and cost: avoid automatic winners
Security depends on operation
Neither platform is inherently secure or insecure. Risk depends on the quality and maintenance of the application code, plugins or packages, authentication and authorization choices, hosting configuration, update discipline, backups, and staff practices. WordPress specifically warns about end-of-life PHP and database versions; Laravel specifically warns against production debug exposure. Those are operational requirements, not proof that one platform has a universal security advantage. WordPress requirements Laravel deployment
Performance is a project result
The available material does not establish a like-for-like benchmark. Page speed and scalability will vary with theme or application code, database queries, extensions, caching, media, traffic patterns, hosting, and front-end architecture. Do not select Laravel solely on the assumption that it is always faster, or reject WordPress on the assumption that it cannot scale.
Total cost follows scope
There is no reliable universal answer that WordPress is always cheaper or that Laravel always costs more. Compare the actual project’s implementation work, theme and plugin or package requirements, hosting, integrations, testing, support, upgrades, and ongoing maintenance. A WordPress site can become expensive when it needs extensive custom behavior; a Laravel build can be wasteful when the requirement is simply publishing pages.
A practical decision process
- List the primary user task. If the main task is publishing and editing content, start with WordPress. If it is completing a business process, exchanging structured data, or applying custom rules, start with Laravel.
- Describe the data and workflow. Identify content types, relationships, roles, approvals, calculations, notifications, and integrations. Requirements that are mostly pages and media favor WordPress; unusual states and rules favor Laravel.
- Decide who must change the system. A content team that needs immediate control benefits from WordPress’s existing CMS. A dedicated development team may prefer Laravel’s control over every screen and service.
- Estimate the operational responsibility. Confirm WordPress hosting meets its current requirements, or plan Laravel’s PHP extensions, web-server routing, writable directories, optimization, queue and schedule operation, and production settings.
- Prototype the riskiest requirement. Test the hardest editorial interaction, integration, permission rule, or data workflow before committing. The platform that handles the project’s most difficult requirement with less long-term compromise is usually the better choice.
Can you combine them?
Yes. A project can use WordPress for editorial content and Laravel for a separate application or service, connected through an API or another integration. This can preserve a familiar publishing workflow while allowing custom business logic elsewhere, but it introduces two codebases, deployment pipelines, authentication boundaries, monitoring needs, and integration points. Use this arrangement when the separation solves a real architectural need, not simply to avoid making an early decision.

Bottom line
Use WordPress when publishing, editorial control, and a ready-made CMS are the center of the project. Use Laravel when the product’s value lies in custom workflows, data models, permissions, integrations, or API-driven application behavior. Compare the implementation and operating work for your specific requirements rather than treating either platform as a universal winner.
