If you want a visible control on the page, choose an implementation that matches your theme: ReadEase for compatible block themes, Accessibility Font Resizer for a separate plugin route, or a carefully tested custom control.
What “resizable text” should achieve
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.4 states: “Except for captions and images of text, text can be resized without assistive technology up to 200 percent without loss of content or functionality.” The WordPress Theme Handbook applies the same 200% target and warns that enlargement must not create two-dimensional scrolling, overflow, or overlapping content.
- Headings, paragraphs, labels, menus, buttons, forms, and error messages remain readable.
- All controls remain usable with a keyboard and assistive technology.
- Content does not disappear behind a fixed element or become reachable only through horizontal and vertical scrolling together.
- Browser zoom remains available; an on-page widget is an additional convenience, not a substitute for browser scaling.

Add a resizer to a block theme with ReadEase
ReadEase is documented as a Gutenberg block for block-theme builders. Use it only if your theme supports the Site Editor.
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for ReadEase, then install and activate the plugin. Recheck the current listing and compatibility information first.
- Open Appearance → Editor.
- Edit a persistent template part, such as the header or footer, and insert the ReadEase: Text Resizer block.
- Use the block settings to select a control style, define the scale range, choose full-page or scoped behavior, and supply a custom CSS selector if only a particular region should change.
- Save the template part, then test the control on several pages while logged out.
Putting the block in a header or footer makes it available throughout the site. A classic theme is outside the plugin’s documented support, so use another route rather than assuming the block will work.

Use Accessibility Font Resizer
This separate plugin exposes visitor text-size choices and documents remembered settings. Its directory listing also describes classes that can be placed in menus, widgets, PHP templates, or post content.
- Go to Plugins → Add New.
- Search for Accessibility font resizer, install it, and activate it.
- Open Settings → Font resizer and configure the available controls.
- Use the documented classes where you need explicit size targets:
afr-normal,afr-large, andafr-xlarge. - If a component does not resize, inspect its HTML and add the relevant element to the plugin’s HTML Elements setting.
- Test percentage, pixel, em, and rem behavior in your actual theme rather than assuming every unit behaves identically.
The listing reported version 1.0.4, more than 800 active installations, WordPress 4.9 or newer, and testing up to WordPress 7.0.5 at the time it was crawled. Those figures are a directory snapshot and may change; verify them on the current listing.

Build a custom or theme-level control
A custom control can follow the incremental approach described in W3C technique G178: offer understandable steps that increase text size up to 200%. The implementation should change the site’s text sizing without removing native browser zoom.
- Make every button or slider keyboard-operable, with a visible focus state and an accessible name.
- Expose the current size and the action that each control performs; do not rely on color or an icon alone.
- Use relative font-size and line-height units where practical, and inspect components that use fixed dimensions.
- Decide whether the control applies to the whole page or a defined content region, then test that scope consistently.
- Do not present an untested code snippet as a guaranteed WordPress solution. Markup, scripts, and CSS must be checked against the active theme, plugins, and responsive breakpoints.
Make browser zoom work before adding a widget
WAI describes scaling as primarily a user-agent responsibility. Ensure your theme does not disable zoom or use CSS and scripts that trap the page at a fixed text size. Then enlarge text with the browser’s native zoom or text-scaling feature and inspect the result. A visible site control can improve discoverability, but the evidence does not establish that every WordPress site must add one.

Test at 200% before publishing
Run the test on representative pages, including a long article, a form, a page with a menu, and any template containing fixed or sticky elements. Use more than one browser and more than one viewport width.
- Navigation: menus open, close, and remain reachable; keyboard focus is not hidden.
- Content: headings, lists, tables, captions, and links remain in reading order without clipping.
- Forms: labels, inputs, validation messages, submit buttons, and date or select controls remain visible and usable.
- Layout: enlarged text does not overlap images, cards, dialogs, banners, or sticky headers.
- Scrolling: the page does not require simultaneous horizontal and vertical scrolling to read ordinary content.
- Responsive states: repeat the check at narrow and wide screen widths; a layout that passes on desktop can fail at a mobile breakpoint.
- Persistence: if a plugin remembers a visitor’s choice, verify that the setting does not make a later page unreadable and that a reset or normal-size option is available.
A resizer is only one accessibility measure
A font-size control cannot compensate for missing image alternative text, poor heading structure, invalid or non-semantic HTML, inaccessible forms, or keyboard traps. Open Accessibility’s plugin-directory guidance describes a comprehensive approach that includes those broader content and markup practices. Treat the resizer as one part of an accessibility review, not as proof of compliance.

How to choose between the routes
- Choose ReadEase when you have a supported block theme and want a block-editor placement with configurable scope and control styles.
- Choose Accessibility Font Resizer when its class-based integration and settings fit your theme, including a classic theme, and you are prepared to verify current compatibility.
- Choose a custom implementation when the control must match a design system or target a specialized content region; budget time for keyboard, assistive-technology, and responsive testing.
- Rely on browser scaling when native zoom already preserves content and functionality and you do not need an additional on-page affordance.
