What is causing the blank YouTube thumbnails?
The current symptom matches a known YouTube issue affecting the Android and iOS mobile apps. While scrolling, viewers may see empty or black gaps, gray boxes, or missing images for videos, community posts, and Shorts. Reports mention the Home, Subscriptions, and profile-related feeds.
TeamYouTube said it was investigating the problem on September 27, 2026. Its notice reported that updating YouTube through the app store helped some users, but it did not promise a universal fix, specify a minimum app version, or say the incident was closed. That means a completely updated phone can still show the problem while the service-side investigation continues.
A separate September 7 incident, reported mainly in Texas, also affected thumbnails in Home, Shorts, and You and included a YouTube TV black-screen problem. TeamYouTube marked that older incident fixed. It demonstrates that similar thumbnail failures can be service-side, but it is not evidence that the newer September 27 issue has been resolved.

Fix the YouTube app in this order

Update YouTube
On an iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, tap your account picture, and look under available updates for YouTube. Tap Update. On Android, open Google Play, search for YouTube, and tap Update when it is available. Reopen YouTube and check the feed that was affected. This is the only workaround specifically identified in the current thumbnail-related TeamYouTube notice; it helped some users, not everyone.

Force a clean app restart
Close YouTube completely from your device’s app switcher, wait a few seconds, and launch it again. Scroll through Home, Subscriptions, and your profile feed rather than checking only one video. This removes a temporary stalled app state without changing your account or subscriptions.

Restart the phone or tablet
Power the device off and back on, then open YouTube before testing other apps. A restart is a low-risk way to clear a temporary networking or rendering problem. It will not resolve a YouTube-wide incident, so compare more than one feed after the reboot.

Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data
If you are on Wi-Fi, briefly test the same feed over cellular data. If you are on cellular data, try a trusted Wi-Fi network. Record whether the thumbnails change; the comparison helps show whether the symptom is tied to one connection. It does not prove that slow internet is the cause when videos load but thumbnail images alone are missing.

Clear YouTube’s cache on Android
Android menu names vary by manufacturer and version. Usually, open Settings, choose Apps (or App management), select YouTube, tap Storage or Storage & cache, and choose Clear cache. Then relaunch YouTube. Use Clear cache, not a similarly named option that removes app data, unless you intentionally want to reset the app.
There is no official iPhone or iPad cache-clearing procedure identified for this symptom in the cited YouTube guidance. Do not apply Android menu instructions to iOS.

Compare the app with a browser or another device
Open youtube.com in a mobile browser, or sign in on another supported device, and inspect the same feeds. If thumbnails work in the browser but remain blank in the app, that pattern supports reporting an app-specific problem; it does not establish a definite local cause. - YouTube app version
- The affected feed, such as Home, Subscriptions, Shorts, or your profile feed

- Whether Wi-Fi and mobile data behave differently
- Whether another browser, device, or account shows the same symptom
YouTube’s Android troubleshooting guidance recommends feedback and testing another supported device when loading trouble continues. These details give support a reproducible scope without assuming the problem is your connection.

Common dead ends and recovery steps
The app-store page has no Update button
Your store may already consider the installed build current, or the rollout may not have reached your device. Confirm the displayed version, restart YouTube, and continue with the connection and browser comparisons. TeamYouTube did not publish a minimum version, so installing an unrelated older package is not an evidence-based workaround.
Clearing Android cache changed nothing
Cache clearing is a general Android loading step, not a guaranteed fix for this known issue. If the same feeds remain blank, test another connection and a browser, then report the result. Repeating the cache action is unlikely to help a service-side outage.
Only thumbnails fail while videos play
Do not conclude that your internet speed is the cause. Thumbnail requests can fail independently of video playback. Capture the exact feeds and connection type in your feedback report.

The problem disappears briefly and returns
Record when it returns and whether it follows a network change, app restart, or feed change. Intermittent behavior is still useful to support, especially when paired with the app version and device model.
You are considering reinstalling or deleting account data
The current TeamYouTube notice and cited Android guidance do not establish reinstalling YouTube, deleting watch history, removing playlists, changing DNS, or buying a new device as a remedy for missing thumbnails. Avoid destructive account steps unless support specifically directs you.
