Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA complete WordPress backup needs both the site’s files and its database. Export or package both as a single backup set, send a copy to cloud storage, keep another copy in a separate location, and verify that the files can be restored. A cloud folder that contains only the WordPress directory is not a complete backup.
What a complete WordPress backup includes
WordPress describes a site backup as having two parts: “Database and Files.” The database stores site content and settings; the files include items such as uploads, themes, plugins, and configuration. A copy of the files alone does not normally include the separate database, and a database export does not contain the site files. See the WordPress backup guide and database backup guide.
Keep the database export and file archive together as one set, created as close together in time as practical. If one is missing or substantially older than the other, restoring may leave the site incomplete or inconsistent.
Choose a backup route and check your host first
Before setting up a new process, find out what your hosting provider already backs up, how often it does so, how long copies are retained, and how to request a restore. Host backups can be useful, but obtaining a host-held copy may take time. You can use host tools, make a manual backup, or use a plugin; in every case, confirm that both files and the database are covered.

| Route | What to confirm | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting provider tools | Whether backups include the database and all site files, retention, and the restore-request process. | Convenient if already included, but retrieving a copy or arranging restoration may take time. |
| Manual export and file copy | That you export the correct database and copy the WordPress files, including uploads, themes, plugins, and required configuration. | Gives you direct control over the backup set, but you must repeat and check the process yourself. |
| Backup plugin | Coverage, supported remote destinations, scheduling, retention controls, restore options, and any paid-feature limits. | Can automate recurring backups, but depends on plugin configuration and the host’s available disk space and permissions. |
Make a manual backup and upload it to cloud storage
- Export the database. Use your host’s database management tool or another supported database export method to save an SQL file or compressed SQL export. WordPress recommends backing up the database first.
- Copy the site files. Download or archive the WordPress site files, including uploads, plugins, themes, and configuration files needed by the site.
- Keep the parts together. Put the database export and file archive in a clearly named folder or archive set with a date, so you can identify which files belong together.
- Upload the set to cloud storage. Copy the complete backup set to your chosen cloud destination. Cloud storage holds a copy; it does not create a complete backup if the database or files were never included.
- Keep another copy elsewhere. Retain a separate copy on a local computer or external drive. WordPress recommends keeping recent backups in different locations; a cloud-only copy leaves you dependent on that account and service being accessible.
- Check the result. Confirm the upload completed and that both the database export and file archive are present and readable. Periodically make a manual backup even when using automation, as WordPress recommends, to check that the automated process is working.
Automate backups with a plugin
A plugin can package and send backups on a schedule, but its coverage and destination support vary. The UpdraftPlus listing in the WordPress.org Plugin Directory documents manual and scheduled backups, restore and migration features, and destinations including Google Drive, Dropbox, and Amazon S3-compatible storage. The listing presents some additional destinations as paid-version features, so check the current listing and plugin interface for the specific destination and feature tier you need.
Before relying on a plugin, review these points:
- Coverage: Does the backup include the database and all necessary files, including uploads, themes, plugins, and configuration?
- Destination: Can it send backups to your chosen cloud service or object-storage endpoint?
- Schedule and retention: Can you set a suitable backup cadence and retain enough historical copies for your recovery needs?
- Restore route: Can you access the remote backup and restore both files and database if the original hosting account is unavailable?
- Host limits: Does the host allow the plugin to create temporary archives, and is there enough local disk space for them?
- Plan restrictions: Are the destination, scheduling, or restore features you need limited to a paid version?
UpdraftPlus support responses describe that plugin’s coverage as including the database, plugins, themes, uploads, and “Others,” while excluding WordPress core files, which are available from WordPress.org. A separate support response says UpdraftPlus stages archive files locally before uploading them. These are product-specific support statements, not rules for every backup plugin; check current product documentation and your host’s constraints before depending on those details. See the relevant UpdraftPlus coverage response and local-staging response.

Verify that the backup can be restored
A successful job notification or a cloud archive is not proof that recovery will work. Check that the expected files exist, can be opened, and correspond to the database export in the same set. Then periodically test the restoration process in a safe environment, such as a staging site, if your host and tools support it.
A typical restoration requires restoring the files and importing the database. If the restored database uses different credentials or connection details, update the site configuration accordingly. WordPress’s backup guidance recommends occasional manual backups as a check on automated backups and explains the separate file and database restoration steps.

Keep the backup plan matched to your site
There is no universally best cloud provider or backup schedule established by the sources here. Choose based on the site’s change frequency, archive size, retention needs, ability to restore when the hosting account is unavailable, and any provider or plugin plan limits. Keep a remote copy and a separate copy elsewhere, and make sure you know how to retrieve both parts of the backup set.
