To make an image smaller without changing a single pixel, use lossless optimization and keep its original dimensions. If a visually identical image is sufficient, test a lossy export or a newer format such as WebP, and inspect it at the size people will actually see. There is no universal quality setting: the right choice depends on the image, required dimensions, transparency or animation, and the software that will receive it.
First define what “without losing quality” means
Two different goals are often mixed together:
Pixel-identical preservation
A lossless process preserves the image data. A byte-for-byte file comparison may still differ because metadata or encoding has changed, but decoding the result should produce the same pixels. Do not resize the image if every original pixel matters. ImageOptim documents that its lossless quality setting changes no pixels only when no resize is applied.
Visually unchanged at the intended size
Lossy compression discards information to obtain a smaller file. A carefully chosen setting can look unchanged in a browser or presentation, but it is not mathematically identical. Detailed photographs usually tolerate lossy compression better than sharp line art, logos, screenshots, and text. High-contrast colored text is especially likely to show halos or block-like artifacts.

A reliable reduction workflow
1. Record the destination requirements
Before exporting, write down the maximum displayed width and height, whether the destination accepts WebP or AVIF, and whether transparency or animation must remain. A publishing system that accepts only JPEG and PNG cannot use a WebP result without a fallback. Keep an untouched original so you can generate another version later.

2. Choose a format that fits the content

Google’s published WebP comparisons report that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs, and lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality index. Those are Google’s documentation figures, not a guarantee for your source files. Google’s WebP FAQ also says WebP typically achieves an average of 30% more compression than JPEG and repeats the 26% lossless-versus-PNG figure. Measure a representative sample instead of applying those percentages to a whole library.
WebP supports both lossless and lossy compression, as well as transparency and animation. AVIF is identified by web.dev as a modern format that may compress better than PNG or JPEG. In every case, verify the current support of your CMS, browser-delivery layer, email system, or upload form.
3. Try a lossless conversion first
Google’s cwebp encoder can produce a lossless WebP:
cwebp -lossless input.png -o output.webpFor a JPEG source, use the encoder appropriate to your source format and retain the original. A lossless conversion can reduce the encoded file while preserving decoded pixels, but it will not always be smaller. Keep whichever result meets your size target without changing the required behavior.

4. Create controlled lossy candidates
For a photographic image, create several candidates rather than trusting one setting:
cwebp -q 90 photo.jpg -o photo-q90.webp
cwebp -q 80 photo.jpg -o photo-q80.webp
cwebp -q 70 photo.jpg -o photo-q70.webpThe -q value is a quality-control input, not a percentage of pixels retained. Compare the resulting file sizes and inspect faces, fine textures, gradients, edges, and any text. View each candidate at its intended display size and also zoom in briefly to catch ringing, blocking, banding, or softened lettering. Select the smallest version that passes that visual check.
5. Resize only when fewer pixels are acceptable
If an original is much larger than its rendered dimensions, resizing can remove more data than compression alone. This changes the image dimensions, so it cannot satisfy a pixel-identity requirement. With cwebp, a resize can be combined with export:
cwebp -resize 1600 0 -q 82 input.jpg -o output-1600.webpHere, the width is set to 1600 and the height is derived by the encoder. Use the actual maximum display width rather than an arbitrary standard, and check that the result remains sharp on the largest screen you support.

6. Compare outputs systematically
- Confirm width and height against the destination requirement.
- Check that transparency remains transparent and animation still plays when those are required.
- Compare file size, not just the format name.
- Inspect at the intended viewing size for halos, block boundaries, ringing, banding, and fuzzy text.
- Open the output in the same CMS, browser, app, or upload form that will deliver it.
- Keep the original and record the format, quality setting, dimensions, and date for repeatable builds.
Local tools versus hosted optimization
Local processing keeps source files on your machine and is convenient for a small set of images or sensitive material. A command-line encoder can be placed in a build script, but you must install it, handle errors, and decide how to process batches.
ImageOptim’s API documents quality levels, resize controls, and format conversion. Its lossless setting does not change pixels when no resize occurs; its lossy levels trade file size against visible artifacts. Cloudinary’s image-optimization documentation describes automatic format handling and fallback behavior for transparency. Hosted processing can simplify batch delivery and automatic format selection, but uploading images to an external service may not fit your privacy or compliance requirements. The documented capabilities do not establish a universal price, speed, or size saving, so evaluate those factors with your own files.

The “lossless” file is larger
Lossless compression cannot promise a smaller result for every source. Keep the original when it is already more efficient, or test a different lossless format that your workflow supports. Do not switch to lossy unless the visual trade-off is acceptable.
The output looks soft or has blocks
You are seeing lossy artifacts or an overly aggressive resize. Raise the quality setting, reduce the resize amount, or return to a lossless export. Judge the image at its real display size; an artifact visible only at extreme zoom may not matter, while a softened one-pixel icon may.

Sharp edges and high-contrast colored text are less forgiving than detailed photographs. Use lossless compression, a higher lossy quality, or a format and workflow that preserves the edges. Exporting a screenshot as a photographic JPEG is often a poor match for its content.

Transparency disappeared
Check that the selected format and destination preserve an alpha channel. WebP supports transparency, but the receiving CMS or fallback path may convert it. Reopen the delivered asset, not just the local file, to verify the result.
The image is still too large after compression
Check dimensions first. If the file contains substantially more pixels than the display requires, resize to the real maximum width and then repeat the quality comparison. If dimensions cannot change, use a different lossless encoding or confirm whether the destination permits WebP or AVIF.
The upload form rejects the optimized file
The destination may not support the chosen format, animation, or color/alpha combination. Test the workflow with a small sample, retain a JPEG or PNG fallback where required, and do not assume that browser support means a particular CMS or email service accepts the file.
How to choose the final file
- Use lossless optimization with no resize when pixel identity is mandatory.
- Otherwise, set the maximum useful dimensions.
- Export a few lossy quality levels or test WebP and AVIF where supported.
- Compare size and artifacts at the intended viewing size.
- Verify transparency, animation, upload acceptance, and delivered output.
- Keep the original and the settings used to produce the approved derivative.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a smaller file always load faster?
Not necessarily. Transfer size is only one factor; decoding cost, the delivery system, caching, and the number of images also affect the experience. Compare the complete delivery workflow, not just the byte count.
Can I use different formats for different images on the same site?
Yes, provided your delivery layer and fallback logic support them. A photograph, transparent logo, and animated asset do not have identical format requirements, so select per asset rather than enforcing one format everywhere.
How can I prove that a lossless derivative kept the pixels?
Decode both files to the same pixel format and run an image-difference check. A metadata or container change is acceptable for this test; any decoded pixel difference means the process was not lossless.
The Bottom Line
Use lossless compression and keep the original dimensions when every pixel must survive. When visual equivalence is enough, resize to the real display size, test several lossy or modern-format exports, and approve the smallest file that passes both an artifact check and the destination workflow.
