When website graphics disappear, inspect the exact failed image or stylesheet request before changing anything. Its URL and the browser’s Network or Console error can distinguish a missing file from an HTTPS, Content Security Policy (CSP), cache, WordPress rewrite, or delivery problem. Work through the checks below in order, then verify the original page and resource.

First, identify what is missing

“Website graphics” can mean an image in the page’s HTML, a CSS background, an icon, a logo, or even the styling that makes a whole page look right. The fix depends on which resource is failing, so note the scope before changing files or settings.

  • Is one image missing, or are all images or graphics missing?
  • Is the missing item an HTML image, a CSS background, an icon, or part of an otherwise unstyled page?
  • Does it fail on one page, one browser, or one device, or everywhere?
  • Did the problem start after an upload, site migration, HTTPS change, theme or plugin update, or CDN change?

These details are clues, not proof of a cause. For example, a recent migration makes a path or rewrite issue worth checking, but the failed request is still the best place to start.

Inspect the failed request in your browser

Open the affected page, then open Developer Tools and inspect its Network and Console panels. In Chrome, use ⋮ → More tools → Developer tools, then select Network and reload the page. Chrome’s Network panel shows page activity and requests; use its filter field to look for the image filename or filter for image resources.

  1. Reload the page with the Network panel open so the failed request appears in the log.
  2. Select the failing image, font, or stylesheet request. Record its full request URL, status or error, and any useful response details.
  3. Check the Console for a message that identifies mixed content, CSP, or another blocked request.
  4. Where appropriate, open the image URL in a new tab. Note whether it displays, returns an error, or redirects somewhere unexpected.

A generic failed-resource message does not by itself identify the cause. Read the URL and the specific browser error together. If the image URL works directly but not on the page, the browser’s Console may reveal that a policy or page security issue is blocking it.

Check the URL, filename, and uploaded file

Compare the requested URL with the file that should be on the live site. Check the domain, directory, filename, capitalization, and extension. A file that exists on your computer or staging site will not load from production unless it has also been deployed to the correct location on the live server.

  • Look for a typo, an outdated directory, or an incorrect domain in the image URL.
  • Check capitalization and the file extension. A case mismatch can matter on the server even if it went unnoticed on a local machine.
  • Confirm the file was uploaded or deployed to the path the page requests, and that the deployed file is the intended version.
  • For a third-party image, confirm the address is still valid and that the provider allows the asset to be loaded from your site.

For WordPress, its troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the image address and confirming that the changed file was uploaded to the correct folder on the host. Don’t rename or move files at random: update the page or stylesheet to point to the intended live file, or restore the missing file at the expected path.

Fix WordPress image 404s after a move or migration

If WordPress image requests return 404 errors after a migration, server move, or change to pretty permalinks, check the site’s permalink and rewrite configuration. WordPress’s common-errors guidance identifies Apache mod_rewrite as one possible issue and recommends resetting permalinks.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
  1. In the WordPress dashboard, open Settings → Permalinks.
  2. Review the current permalink structure, then select Save Changes to refresh the rewrite rules. Avoid changing the structure unnecessarily if you only need to refresh the rules.
  3. Reload the affected page and inspect the same image request again.
  4. If the request still returns 404, ask the host or site administrator to check the server’s rewrite configuration and whether the image file is present at the requested path.

Do not edit .htaccess unless the site uses a configuration that calls for it and you can make the change safely. A mistaken server configuration edit can affect more than the image request; ask the host if you are unsure.

Resolve HTTP images on an HTTPS page

If the page address begins with https:// but an image, stylesheet, or CDN asset is requested over http://, inspect the Console for a mixed-content warning or block. Cloudflare’s SSL/TLS guidance notes that modern browsers block HTTP requests on secure HTTPS pages; MDN’s mixed-content guidance also covers image sources and CSS image URLs.

  1. Find the insecure http:// resource in the Console or Network panel.
  2. Replace its reference with the working HTTPS URL if the host supports HTTPS.
  3. If the asset is on a CDN, check that the CDN URL itself uses HTTPS and is configured to serve that file securely.
  4. If a third-party asset is not available over HTTPS, choose a secure replacement or remove the reference rather than weakening browser security.

Check more than the visible image. An insecure stylesheet can make the entire page appear unstyled, while an insecure URL inside a stylesheet can cause a CSS background to disappear. Retest after changing the reference; don’t assume that changing http to https worked unless the new request succeeds.

Check Content Security Policy (CSP)

If the Console says a request violates Content Security Policy, inspect the policy returned with the page. For images, the relevant directive is usually img-src. If img-src is absent, default-src may control image loading instead. MDN’s CSP documentation explains these fetch directives.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  1. Identify the blocked image origin from the Console message and the Network request.
  2. Check the site’s CSP header or policy configuration for img-src and its default-src fallback.
  3. If the site needs that image host, allow only the required origin in the applicable directive.
  4. Reload and confirm the browser no longer reports a CSP violation and that the request succeeds.

Don’t disable CSP broadly to make one image appear. A policy may be deliberately restricting which sites can provide content; add only the source the page actually needs, and involve the person responsible for the site’s security configuration if necessary.

Clear the relevant cache and check recent changes

If the file and URL are correct, a cached older version may still be served. WordPress’s troubleshooting documentation notes that browser, server-side, and plugin caches can affect whether a change appears. WordPress itself does not include a cache by default, so only purge cache layers that your site actually uses.

  1. Reload the page, then try a private window or another browser to check whether the issue is limited to your browser’s stored state.
  2. Clear the browser cache if it continues to show an outdated graphic.
  3. If installed, purge the relevant WordPress cache plugin, host cache, reverse proxy, or CDN cache. Follow that layer’s own instructions.
  4. Retest the exact page and image URL. If you changed a file but a CDN still serves an old copy, check that the new version is deployed and the correct cache was purged.

If the problem began after a theme or plugin change, use WordPress’s troubleshooting path to isolate the change carefully. Back up the site before configuration or file changes, and avoid deactivating components on a live site without considering their effect on visitors. A cache plugin is not a universal fix, and installing one will not correct a wrong path, blocked request, or missing file.

When images load but still do not appear

If the image request succeeds but the graphic is not visible on the page, check how the page or stylesheet presents it. For an HTML image, inspect the element’s source and styles; for a background, inspect the relevant CSS rule and the element it applies to. Confirm that the image has not been hidden by a rule or covered by another element, and that the element has the dimensions and layout the design expects.

  • Use the browser’s element inspector to locate the image or the element with the background.
  • Check whether a rule sets the image or its container to display: none, visibility: hidden, zero opacity, or zero dimensions.
  • For a CSS background, check that the relevant stylesheet loaded and that the background URL is the one you expect.
  • For an HTML image, inspect the img element’s source and computed styles. The browser’s Network panel can establish whether the file itself loaded.

If the whole page appears unstyled, investigate stylesheet requests as well as images. A missing or blocked stylesheet can remove layout and graphic styling together; repairing an individual image URL will not address a stylesheet that failed to load.

Verify the fix or prepare a useful escalation

After each change, revisit the original page and inspect the same resource rather than relying only on its appearance. Confirm that the image or stylesheet request succeeds and that the relevant Console error is gone. If the fault might be local to a browser, check in a private window or a second browser.

If the problem persists, give the site administrator or host concrete evidence: the page URL, exact asset URL, browser and device, Network status or error, Console message, and what changed shortly before the failure. Include whether the site uses a CDN or cache layer if you know. That information helps separate a missing or misrouted file from a browser security restriction or a delivery problem.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo can capture the affected page so you can document what it looks like while you diagnose it; a screenshot does not repair a missing resource. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF, and its response includes page-verdict and billing headers that help you tell what happened to the capture. Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my website images broken even though the image file exists?

The page may request a different URL than the file’s actual live location, or the browser may block the request because of HTTPS or CSP. Compare the exact Network request with the deployed file and read the Console error.

How do I fix images not loading on WordPress after moving hosts?

Check the requested image path and confirm the file exists on the new host. If pretty-permalink image requests return 404s, refresh Settings → Permalinks and ask the host to verify rewrite configuration if the problem remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does a website look unstyled when its images are also missing?

A stylesheet may be failing to load, so inspect stylesheet requests in Network as well as image requests. A missing stylesheet can affect layout and CSS graphics across the page.
