These methods produce different results: an HTML file alone may not include the images and styles that make a page look right, while even a complete offline copy usually cannot preserve a live website’s server-side features.
What “convert a website to HTML” can mean
A web page is not necessarily one file. A browser receives an HTML document, then may request stylesheets, images, fonts, scripts, video, and other resources separately. JavaScript can also change the page after the initial document loads. MDN describes the HTML being parsed into a DOM tree, with elements such as <img> and <script> triggering additional requests. That is why saving a page can mean one of three things:
- HTML only: Save the top-level HTML document. It is a single file and can be useful for inspecting or editing markup, but it may refer to resources that remain online or are not saved at all.
- Complete page: Save the HTML alongside a folder of related images, stylesheets, scripts, and other files. It can look more like the original when opened offline, but it is a collection of files and links may be rewritten.
- Single-file archive: Put the page and many of its resources into one HTML or MHTML-style file. It is convenient to move or store, but it is a snapshot, not a working copy of the site’s backend.
Microsoft’s save-format documentation makes the distinction explicit: HTML-only saves the top-level document and excludes subresources, while Complete includes related CSS, JavaScript, images, and other files. Pick the format based on whether you want editable source, an offline-looking copy, or one portable archive.
Save a page with Chrome
Chrome’s built-in save command is the simplest choice for an occasional page. Open the page and wait for the content you need to appear, then use this path:

- In Chrome, open the page you want to save.
- Select More → More Tools → Save Page As.
- Choose a destination and inspect the format options in the save dialog.
- Choose an HTML-only option if you want just the document, or a complete-page option if available and you want associated resources saved too.
- Select Save. If Chrome creates an accompanying folder, keep it alongside the HTML file.
Google’s current help page gives the menu path above. The names and availability of format choices can vary by browser build. If the dialog offers only one choice, do not assume that images, fonts, or scripts have been embedded; open the saved copy offline to check.
Choose a save mode in Firefox
Firefox exposes the difference between a one-document save and a multi-file page more clearly. Mozilla Firefox Help, updated 11 August 2023, describes these options:
| Firefox format | What it saves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Web page, complete | The page with pictures and related files in a companion directory. The original HTML link structure may not be preserved. | An offline copy where visual resources matter more than keeping the original links intact. |
| Web page, HTML only | The original page’s HTML without pictures, in one file; it preserves the original HTML link structure. | Inspecting or editing the document, or keeping a small HTML file when missing local images are acceptable. |
| All files | Equivalent to HTML-only while letting you choose an extension such as .htm or .shtml. |
A specific file extension is needed for your workflow. |
To save, open the page in Firefox and choose File → Save Page As (on some systems, the File menu may be hidden until shown). Select the desired format in the dialog, choose a location, and save. For the complete format, move or copy the HTML file and its generated directory together; separating them can break local references.
Make one portable HTML file with SingleFile
SingleFile is an open-source browser extension for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari. Its project documentation says it can save a page and resources such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and frames as one HTML file. This is a good choice when the important requirement is a single item to store, attach, or transfer rather than a cleanly separated set of source files.

- Install SingleFile from the relevant browser extension store and open the page.
- Wait for the content you want to preserve to load, including any images that appear only after scrolling.
- Use the SingleFile toolbar action to save the page.
- If images or frames are deferred, use SingleFile’s option to load them before saving, then save again.
- Open the resulting HTML file with the network disconnected, or in a browser session where the original site is unavailable, and check the parts you need.
SingleFile’s documentation also lists a command-line interface for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its exact installation and invocation depend on the CLI release and setup, so use the project’s current instructions rather than copying a command intended for another version.
A one-file archive is not the same as a full offline application. Login sessions, live feeds, search, payments, server-side actions, and some interactive widgets depend on services that cannot be recreated merely by saving the visible page.
Download one page with GNU Wget
GNU Wget is useful when you need a repeatable command-line process. The official manual demonstrates this command:
wget -p --convert-links https://example.com/page
The -p option requests page requisites, and --convert-links rewrites links for local viewing. Expect an HTML document plus downloaded assets, not necessarily one self-contained HTML file.

Respect access controls, robots policies, copyright, and the site’s terms of use.
Choose the method that matches the result you need
| Method | File shape | Offline appearance | Automation | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Save Page As | HTML-only or a page with companion resources, depending on the available format | Depends on format and captured resources | Manual | You need a quick capture in a browser. |
| Firefox Save Page | HTML-only or HTML plus a resource directory | Complete mode includes pictures and related files, but may not preserve original link structure | Manual | You want an explicit choice between one HTML document and a complete page. |
| SingleFile | One HTML file | Can preserve many resources for a visual snapshot; live behavior may not survive | Extension or CLI | You need one portable archive. |
| GNU Wget | HTML plus downloaded resources | Useful for local viewing if requisites were retrieved and links converted | Command line | You need a repeatable download workflow. |
For occasional captures, start with the browser already open on the page. Use Firefox’s modes when file shape matters, SingleFile when portability as one file matters most, and Wget when you want a command you can repeat. None of these choices guarantees a pixel-perfect record of a dynamic site; test the saved artifact for the specific purpose you have in mind.
Why an offline copy may differ from the live page
A browser assembles the visible page from multiple responses and may modify it after loading. A save can therefore be incomplete even when the HTML file opens correctly.
- HTML-only does not mean self-contained. The document can reference remote CSS, images, scripts, or fonts, and those references may stop working offline.
- Late-loading resources can be missed. Lazy images, iframes, and content added after scrolling or waiting may not be present unless the saving method loads them first.
- Authentication and APIs are separate dependencies. A saved document usually cannot reproduce resources that require an active login or data fetched from a service after the page opens.
- Interactivity depends on more than markup. A visual archive does not preserve the site’s server-side actions, live data, or account state as a functioning application.
- Local paths can change. Complete-page modes and link conversion may alter where the saved HTML looks for assets, so keep generated folders together and test links.
For an archive, check it in the intended browser with the network disabled. Look for broken images, missing fonts, layout changes, dead links, and controls that no longer work. If fidelity matters, retain the original URL and capture date with the saved file so viewers know what page the snapshot represents.

Troubleshooting common save problems
The HTML opens, but images or styling are missing
You likely saved HTML-only, separated the companion resource directory, or the browser could not retrieve the resource. Save as a complete page, keep its generated folder beside the HTML, and test again. If you need a single file, use a page-archiving tool and verify its output offline.
The saved page is blank or missing content
Wait for the page to finish loading and scroll through the sections that matter before saving. Some sites populate content only after scrolling, interaction, or an API response; a basic save may capture only what was present at that moment. A login-gated or unavailable resource will not become part of the archive just because the page was saved.
The page looks right but buttons do nothing
This is expected for many snapshots. A saved copy may preserve appearance without the remote server actions, scripts, current account state, or live data required by a control. Use the live site for those actions; do not treat an archive as a working offline clone.
Local links point to the wrong place
Complete-page saving can rewrite links, and Wget’s link conversion also changes them for local viewing. Keep the output structure intact and inspect the HTML’s links if you intend to edit or redistribute it. Firefox’s HTML-only mode is the better fit when retaining the original HTML link structure is more important than saving pictures.

Wget does not retrieve the page or its assets
Check that the URL is correct and publicly accessible from your command-line environment. A page requiring interactive sign-in, permissions, or browser-specific behavior may not be available to a straightforward Wget request. Do not bypass access controls; use a permitted export or save method instead.

Check the file before relying on it
Choose the save format according to whether you need markup, a folder of assets, or a single snapshot. Then open the result in the browser and environment where it will be used. A file that looks correct online can still depend on network resources, so the offline check is the practical test of whether the conversion did what you needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a website I do not own?
Saving a page for personal reference is different from republishing its contents. Before distributing or reusing saved text, images, or other material, check the site’s terms and applicable copyright rules.
Can I convert a whole website into one HTML file?
A one-file archive is generally a snapshot of an individual page and its captured resources, not an entire functioning multi-page website. For multiple pages, each page and its dependencies require a suitable capture workflow.
