Hello Dolly is an optional sample plugin included with WordPress. When active, it displays a randomly selected lyric from the song Hello, Dolly! in the upper-right corner of WordPress administration screens. It does not add a public-site feature, and you can safely deactivate and delete it if you do not need the example or its novelty message.

What Hello Dolly does

Hello Dolly was written by Matt Mullenweg and is presented in the official WordPress directory as a historical and playful demonstration of what a plugin can do. WordPress documentation identifies it as one of the default plugins bundled with WordPress and describes it as the first official WordPress plugin.

When activated, it chooses a lyric from Hello, Dolly! and prints it on administration pages. Visitors to your website do not see it. It does not control publishing, themes, comments, updates, security, backups, or search-engine features.

Is Hello Dolly safe to delete?

Yes. A WordPress.org support response says the plugin can be safely deleted because it has no database tables and consists entirely of one PHP file. Deleting it removes that file; there is no Hello Dolly data store that requires a separate cleanup operation.

Deactivate the plugin before deleting it from the dashboard. If you later want the historical example, you can reinstall it from the WordPress plugin directory.

How the plugin works

A single-file example

The repository identifies Hello Dolly as version 1.7.2, authored by Matt Mullenweg. Its implementation is a single hello.php file containing the lyric list and hooks for the WordPress administration interface. The WordPress Plugin Handbook uses Hello Dolly to illustrate that a plugin can consist of one PHP file placed directly in the plugins folder.

What activation and deletion change

  • Active: a lyric is displayed in the WordPress dashboard.
  • Deactivated: the lyric stops appearing, but the plugin file remains installed.
  • Deleted: the plugin file is removed. No plugin tables are reported.

Does Hello Dolly slow down a WordPress site?

There is no published, dated performance benchmark for Hello Dolly. Its documented behavior is limited to selecting and displaying a lyric in the administration interface, so it has no meaningful role in front-end page rendering. That practical assessment is based on its single-file, admin-only design—not on a measured speed test.

Rank #2

If your goal is a minimal production installation, removing unused plugins is still a reasonable housekeeping choice. Do not claim a specific speed improvement from deleting Hello Dolly unless you have measurements from your own site.

Current WordPress.org listing

The WordPress.org listing accessed on September 30, 2026 reports the following metadata. Installation counts, ratings, review totals, and compatibility labels can change, so treat these as a dated snapshot.

Listing detail Reported value Qualification
Plugin version 1.7.2 Current directory listing accessed September 30, 2026
Required WordPress version 4.6 or higher Directory requirement
Tested up to WordPress 6.9.9 Directory compatibility label at access date

Rating 4.4 out of 5 from 177 reviews Volatile directory metadata

Should you keep, deactivate, or delete it?

Choice Operational effect Best fit
Keep active Shows a random lyric on administration screens Personal sites, historical interest, or demonstrations
Deactivate Stops the lyric while leaving the file installed Temporary suppression or a future teaching reference
Delete Removes the plugin file; no plugin tables are reported Production sites that do not use the example and prefer fewer installed plugins

There is no operational requirement to keep Hello Dolly. Keeping it is reasonable when its historical or educational value matters; deleting it is the cleaner choice when it is simply unused.

Delete Hello Dolly from the WordPress dashboard

  1. Sign in to WordPress and open Plugins in the administration menu.
  2. Find Hello Dolly in the plugin list.
  3. If it is active, click Deactivate and wait for the confirmation.
  4. Click Delete for Hello Dolly.
  5. Confirm the deletion when WordPress asks.

After deletion, the plugin no longer appears in the installed-plugin list and its dashboard lyric disappears. Your posts, pages, media, themes, comments, and public-facing site remain unchanged.

Uninstall it with WP-CLI

Recommended command

From the WordPress installation directory, run:

wp plugin uninstall hello

WP-CLI’s uninstall command removes the plugin and runs its uninstall routine when one exists. WP-CLI warns and skips an active plugin unless you deactivate it first or explicitly request deactivation as part of the command.

File deletion without an uninstall routine

You can instead run:

wp plugin delete hello

This lower-level command deletes the plugin files without deactivating the plugin or running an uninstall routine. Use it only when that distinction is intentional; deactivating first and using wp plugin uninstall hello is the safer standard workflow.
