These need different fixes. First copy the complete error and note whether it occurs during page.goto() or while launching the browser, UI mode, or codegen.
First identify which “internal server error” you have
Look at the timing, the exact message, and whether a response arrived. The phrase alone does not identify the cause.
| What you see | Where it happens | What it means |
|---|---|---|
page.goto() completes and the response has status 500 |
While navigating to your app or API | The remote server returned a valid HTTP response. Playwright can expose that response to the test; status 500 is not, by itself, a navigation exception. |
ProtocolError: Protocol error (Browser.getVersion): Internal server error, session closed. |
During browser startup or browser-protocol communication | The browser session closed or failed during protocol setup. Investigate the browser launch environment, executable, and versions rather than treating it as an application HTTP response. |
| A rendered HTML page says “Internal Server Error” | After navigating through a proxy or to a site | A server or intermediary returned an error page. The page text is not necessarily the same error as a Playwright protocol failure. |
One reported proxy case showed an HTML Internal Server Error page even though the reporter said curl worked with the same proxy URL and credentials. That example illustrates why the message alone is not enough to diagnose the cause; it does not establish a general proxy defect.
When navigation returns HTTP 500
An HTTP 500 is a response from the destination, not proof that Playwright itself crashed. The Page API documents that page.goto() returns the main resource response and does not throw merely because the server returned a valid HTTP status such as 404 or 500. Your test should inspect the response status and, where useful, the response body and server-side logs.

Capture the response instead of assuming navigation failed
In JavaScript, save the response from navigation and assert the status your test expects:
const response = await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000/health');
if (!response) {
throw new Error('Navigation did not produce a main-resource response');
}
console.log('HTTP status:', response.status());
console.log('Response URL:', response.url());
if (response.status() >= 500) {
console.error((await response.text()).slice(0, 2000));
}
A returned response lets you distinguish an application failure from a failed navigation. A missing response needs separate investigation: the request may have failed before receiving a valid main-resource response, or navigation may have been interrupted.

Find the source of the 500
- Check the application or API logs for the same request and timestamp. The server-side exception and request context are usually more useful than the browser’s rendered error page.
- Record the final response URL, status, and a bounded excerpt of the response body. Avoid logging credentials, session cookies, or sensitive user data.
- Confirm the test’s base URL, route, environment variables, database state, and test data. A server that works locally may return 500 under a different test configuration.
- Compare a direct request to the application with the request made through any configured proxy. A proxy-generated error page and an application-generated 500 can look alike in the browser.
- Do not make the test pass by ignoring every 500. If 500 is unexpected, assert that it is not returned and fix the failing dependency or application path.
When Chromium closes during startup
A message such as ProtocolError: Protocol error (Browser.getVersion): Internal server error, session closed. is different from a page receiving HTTP 500. It points to failure around the browser session or protocol connection. Because the wording does not identify a single cause, reproduce the failure with the smallest browser launch possible and check what changed in the runtime environment.
Reduce the case to a minimal launch
Run a small script that launches the same browser and navigates to a known reachable page. If launch itself fails before navigation, concentrate on Playwright’s browser installation and execution environment. If launch succeeds but a particular navigation fails, inspect that URL, network route, and proxy separately.

Check the installed browser and runtime
- Use the browser binaries installed for the Playwright version in your project. After changing Playwright versions, install the corresponding browsers again using the installation command for your language and package manager.
- Check that the process can execute the browser and access required runtime libraries in its operating system or container. A missing executable, incompatible environment, or restricted launch environment can prevent a session from starting.
- Compare local and CI/container runs. Note the operating system, container image, Playwright package version, browser channel, launch options, and whether the process runs as a restricted user.
- Remove custom launch arguments temporarily and try the default launch. If the minimal default works, reintroduce custom arguments one at a time to find the change associated with the failure.
- Capture the full stack trace and browser-launch logs where available. The final line alone may omit whether failure happened before process launch, during connection, or after the browser exited.
When the failure occurs in UI mode or codegen
UI mode and code generation also need to launch a browser or communicate with browser tooling. If the error appears before a page is opened, do not diagnose it as an HTTP 500 from your application. First establish whether a plain Chromium launch works in the same project and environment. If that succeeds, compare the invocation, browser selection, and project configuration used by UI mode or codegen with the working launch.
If a browser window opens and then displays an Internal Server Error page, inspect the page’s actual response and address bar. That is evidence about a navigation or intermediary response, not by itself evidence that UI mode’s browser protocol failed.

How to investigate a proxy-related error page
A proxy may be involved when a navigation returns an HTML error page, especially if direct access behaves differently. A reported case described a proxy navigation yielding “Internal Server Error” while curl reportedly worked with the same proxy URL and credentials. That report does not show that identical network behavior was verified in both clients, so treat it as a reason to compare requests, not as proof of a Playwright bug.
- Record the exact destination URL, proxy configuration, status code, and response body. Redact proxy credentials before sharing logs.
- Check that Playwright is using the intended proxy settings for the browser context or launch and that authentication is configured in the way the proxy expects.
- Compare the actual request path, redirects, DNS resolution, and TLS behavior between the browser and command-line request. A successful
curlrequest does not establish that every browser request follows the same route. - Try the destination without the proxy only if your network policy permits it. If the direct request works but the proxied one fails, provide the proxy operator with the timestamp and sanitized response details.
- Separate proxy errors from application responses using server and proxy logs where available. The same visible text can be generated at different points in the request path.
Use assertions and logs that distinguish failures
Tests are easier to diagnose when they report whether a navigation returned an HTTP response or failed before one arrived. For an endpoint expected to succeed, assert the response rather than allowing an error page to count as success:

if (!response) {
throw new Error('No main-resource response was returned');
}
if (!response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Unexpected HTTP ${response.status()} from ${response.url()}`);
}
Keep browser launch diagnostics and application logs separate. Include the exact Playwright version, runtime/operating system, command used, and whether the failure is repeatable. This lets someone tell a browser-session problem from a server response without relying on the ambiguous phrase “internal server error.”
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is to produce a screenshot rather than test browser behavior, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Example cURL call:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie/consent banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright throw an exception just because a page returns HTTP 500?
No. A valid HTTP status is returned as the navigation response; inspect its status and assert the behavior your test expects.
What does “Browser.getVersion: Internal server error, session closed” mean?
It is a browser-protocol/session failure, not an HTTP 500 from the page. The wording alone does not establish its root cause.
