Chrome and other Chromium browsers generally need an extension such as GoFullPage, Awesome Screenshot, or OpenCapture. For repeatable, automated captures, Firefox DevTools or a screenshot API is more suitable than a manual browser workflow.
This guide explains each option, when stitching fails, how to capture dynamic pages, and how to choose between local tools and a hosted service.
What a full-page screenshot captures
A normal screenshot records only the visible viewport. A full-page screenshot captures the page below it as well, usually by scrolling through the document and stitching multiple viewport images into one PNG, JPG, PDF, or clipboard image. The process can expose content that is lazy-loaded only after scrolling, but it can also reveal problems that do not appear in a single viewport.
- Fixed headers and cookie bars: a stitching tool may repeat them in every band or overlap them.
- Animations and video: different scroll positions can be captured at different frames.
- Lazy images: images may be missing unless the tool scrolls far enough or waits for them.
- Iframes and nested scroll areas: an extension may capture the outer document but not every embedded or independently scrolling panel.
- Very long documents: the output can be extremely tall, slow to edit, or too large for some image viewers.
For a page you publish or test regularly, capture the real target URL in the real browser and verify the result rather than assuming every page will stitch perfectly.

Microsoft Edge: capture a full page without an extension
Edge’s Screenshot feature can capture a full page or a selected area, including parts that require scrolling. Microsoft documents both the page context menu and the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut.
- Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge and wait for its initial content to load.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- In the overlay, choose the full-page option rather than a selected area.
- Use the markup controls if you need to draw or annotate.
- Choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard or Save to write it to a file.
Edge is the simplest choice when you already use it and want markup without granting an extension access to every page. Menu names and availability can change with browser releases, device type or market.
Firefox: native full-page screenshot
Firefox’s Screenshot tool separates the visible viewport from the entire document.
- Open the page in Firefox.
- Open the page actions menu and select Take a Screenshot (you can also use the browser’s screenshot command where available).
- Choose Save full page for the entire document, or Save visible for only the current viewport.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Firefox is a good manual option when you need a clean image quickly and do not need extension-based annotation or PDF export.

Firefox DevTools: controlled and repeatable captures
DevTools is the most controllable browser-native route. You can enable the toolbox button labeled Take a screenshot of the entire page, then click it; Firefox saves the image to Downloads.
Enable the full-page button
- Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I.
- Open the DevTools settings (the gear icon).
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page in the available toolbox buttons.
- Click the camera/full-page button in the DevTools toolbar.
Use the Web Console helper
Firefox’s Web Console provides a :screenshot helper. The full-page switch is --fullpage; other documented switches include --delay, --dpr, --filename, --file, --clipboard and --selector.
:screenshot --fullpage --delay 2 --dpr 2 --filename homepage.png
The delay allows a page or animation to settle. DPR controls device-pixel density, the filename sets the output name, and a selector lets you target one element instead of the entire document. This approach is useful for QA scripts, hover or delayed states, and captures that must be recreated with the same settings.
Chrome and Chromium browsers: extension choices
GoFullPage
GoFullPage is a dedicated full-page capture extension for Chrome and Chromium browsers. Its Chrome Web Store listing records version 8.7 on August 11, 2026. The listing reports PNG, JPG and PDF export, auto-scroll, fixed-element and iframe handling, and fixes for long or dynamic pages. These are vendor-reported capabilities, so test the pages that matter to you.

Awesome Screenshot
Awesome Screenshot documents Capture → Full Page for Chrome and Edge-compatible browsers, Capture Full Page for Safari, and Capture Entire Page for Firefox. It is useful when a team works across those browsers and prefers one extension’s capture and editing workflow. Check the extension’s current permissions and export behavior before using it on confidential pages.
OpenCapture
OpenCapture is an open-source, local-first extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. It stitches a full page into one PNG or PDF and includes crop, drawing, text and blur tools. Its documentation says rendering and editing happen locally, with no account required for free capture, editing and export, and that nothing is uploaded. An optional tiled-watermark supporter unlock is listed as a one-time $5 purchase for 1,000 credits; pricing can change.
How to capture difficult pages
Lazy-loaded images and infinite scroll
Scroll through the page once before capturing so images have a chance to load. If the page uses infinite scroll, there may be no stable “full page” boundary; capture a defined section or use the site’s print view instead. DevTools’ delay option and API-level wait conditions are more predictable than clicking immediately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Cookie banners, chat widgets and sticky elements
Dismiss consent dialogs before a manual capture. Hide chat launchers or sticky bars in a test copy of the page where possible. If you cannot change the page, choose a tool with selector hiding or custom CSS/JavaScript. Always inspect the top, middle and bottom of a stitched result for repeated fixed elements.
Animations, video and carousels
Pause animation, choose a stable carousel slide, or add a delay before capture. Otherwise each stitched band can show a different frame and produce visible seams.

- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
Embedded frames and nested scrolling
Confirm whether the content belongs to the main document or an iframe. A browser tool may not have permission to capture cross-origin frame contents, and a nested panel may need its own element capture. Capture the frame separately when an exact record is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Automated option: ScreenshotNeo
If screenshots belong in CI, documentation builds, monitoring, or an AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo avoids maintaining a browser script. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It can load lazy images for full-page captures, capture one CSS-selected element, set dark mode, select a device or any viewport, use retina scale, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, click before capture, hide selectors, block ads/trackers/requests/resource types, set headers/cookies/user agent/Authorization, choose timezone and geolocation, use a transparent background, resize images, cache with a chosen TTL, create signed links, run asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, capture up to 100 URLs per bulk call, expose usage data and provide an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migration.
It also accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Troubleshooting checklist
- Only the visible area was saved: choose Edge’s full-page mode, Firefox’s Save full page, or the extension’s full-page command rather than a selected area.
- The bottom is missing: wait for lazy content, scroll manually once, and retry with a delay or network-idle wait.
- Sticky headers repeat: hide the selector, disable sticky positioning in a test stylesheet, or capture the page through an API with selector controls.
- A dialog blocks the capture: dismiss it first or use a service that handles consent and known popup platforms.
- Text is blurry: increase DPR/retina scale, but expect a larger file; verify the final image dimensions.
- An iframe is blank: check cross-origin restrictions and capture the embedded resource separately if permitted.
- The capture times out: reduce page complexity, block unnecessary resources, capture a specific element, or use an asynchronous job.
- The result is too tall to open: export PDF, split the page into sections, or resize the image after capture.
Which tool should you choose?
- Edge Screenshot: you use Edge and want a built-in, annotated result.
- Firefox Screenshot: you need a fast full-page image or clipboard copy.
- Firefox DevTools: you need delay, DPR, filename, selector or repeatable commands.
- GoFullPage: Chrome/Chromium coverage and long-page behavior are your priorities.
- Awesome Screenshot: you want documented full-page workflows across Chrome-compatible browsers, Safari and Firefox.
- OpenCapture: local processing, no-account use, blur and PNG/PDF editing matter most.
- ScreenshotNeo: you need automation, cleanup of consent and widgets, API controls, billing protection for failed pages, or MCP access for AI agents.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take a full-page screenshot of a page that is taller than my monitor?
Yes. Full-page tools scroll or render below the viewport and combine the result; the final image can be much taller than your screen.
Should I use PNG, JPG, WebP or PDF?
Use PNG for crisp text and annotations, JPG for smaller photographic images, WebP for efficient web delivery, and PDF when the result is primarily for documents or printing.
Is a browser extension safe for private pages?
Review its permissions and privacy policy. For local processing, OpenCapture states that captures are rendered and edited in the browser and not uploaded; built-in browser tools avoid installing an extension.
Quick Recap
Why does a full-page screenshot show repeated content?
Stitching captured several viewports while a fixed header, chat button or other sticky element remained in place. Hide or disable that element and capture again.
