Modern SharePoint pages resize and crop images according to the section, column, web-part layout, and viewing device. Choose the placement first, then prepare a source image at least as wide as that column, match the layout’s aspect ratio, and set a focal point when the subject must stay visible.
The dimensions below are Microsoft Support recommendations and examples, not guaranteed rendered sizes. Always preview the published page at desktop and narrow/mobile widths.
Why one “best” size does not exist
Responsive SharePoint pages can show the same file at different widths and heights. A full-width image may span the available screen while its height changes automatically; a two-column image is constrained by a much narrower column; a Hero or News layout may crop to its own ratio. Microsoft describes this directly: “Because of the responsive page design, there’s not a specific height or width in pixels that will ensure that an image will maintain a specific shape across devices and layouts.”
Use pixel values as production targets for the source file, not as promises about the final display. The communication-site grid is centered, can reach a maximum content width of 1204 px, and supports layouts down to 320 px for mobile. Web parts scale horizontally as the page layout changes.

Recommended source widths by page column
Start with the column that will contain the image. Microsoft’s general rule is that an image expected to fill a column should be at least as wide as that column.

These widths are useful starting points for source artwork. They do not mean that SharePoint will always display exactly 1920, 1204, 586, or 380 pixels. Browser width, screen density, page chrome, and the selected web-part layout still affect the rendered result.
Example dimensions for common ratios
For non-full-width layouts, Microsoft gives rounded examples at 16:9 and 4:3. Use the ratio that the selected web part supports.

In a full-width column, SharePoint displays the image across the available screen width and determines the height automatically from the screen and layout. Do not force a fixed height merely because a source file uses one of these examples.

Aspect ratios by web part and layout
The web part, not just the column, determines how much of the source image remains visible. Select the layout before composing important text or faces near an edge.

A source image can be perfectly sharp and still look wrong if its composition does not tolerate the crop. For example, a wide banner with a subject at the extreme edge may lose that subject in a Hero or News tile.
Page title images and thumbnails
For a page title area, use a landscape image—16:9 or wider is a practical target. Microsoft says title images look best at 1 MB or more and recommends setting a focal point so the important subject remains in frame. The focal point matters when the same image is reused in thumbnails, News layouts, or search results, where the crop is different.
Keep faces, logos, and essential text away from all four edges. If text is part of the artwork, test the narrowest expected view; a responsive crop can remove words that looked safe on a desktop preview.
Site-header and logo dimensions
Header assets follow separate recommendations. Do not apply these dimensions to ordinary Image, Hero, News, or Quick links web parts.

Prepare a dedicated logo and thumbnail rather than shrinking a page banner into a square. Header slots have different proportions and visibility rules.
A reliable workflow for choosing the right size
- Identify the placement. Decide whether the file is for the page title area, site header, page thumbnail, Image web part, Hero, News, Quick links, or Image Gallery.
- Determine the column. Note whether the section is full width, one, two, or three columns, or a one-third split. Use the corresponding source width table above.
- Select the web-part layout and ratio. Choose 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 21:9, or the layout-specific behavior before finalizing the composition.
- Compose for cropping. Leave a safe margin around the focal subject. Avoid putting vital words or faces at the edge.
- Set a focal point where available. In the page title area and Hero imagery, use the focal-point control to tell SharePoint which part must remain visible.
- Preview both wide and narrow views. Open the page in Edit mode, select the image or web part, and use SharePoint’s resize and crop controls. Check the published page on a desktop-width window and a narrow/mobile-width window.
- Override thumbnails when necessary. If the automatic title-area or first-web-part image is a poor thumbnail, choose a better page thumbnail instead of relying on the default.
Composition and file-preparation decisions
Images with text
Use short, large text and keep it inside the crop-safe center. SharePoint may show the image in a tile, thumbnail, or mobile carousel with less visible width than the original.
People, products, and logos
Place the important subject near the selected focal point and leave breathing room around it. A centered subject generally survives more layouts than one placed against an edge, but still needs a narrow-screen preview.

If the same photo will serve a page title, News card, and Quick link, choose a flexible landscape composition and set a focal point for each placement. Create separate crops when the image contains text or a tightly framed subject.
Troubleshooting unexpected results
- The image is cut off. The web-part layout is cropping to its own ratio. Recompose to that ratio, change the layout, or adjust the crop and focal point.
- The subject disappears on mobile. Responsive layouts use less width and may switch to a carousel ratio. Move the subject toward the safe area and verify the mobile preview.
- The image looks soft in a wide column. The source may be narrower than the display area. Start with at least the recommended column width, such as 1204 px for one column or 1920 px for full width.
- A full-width image has a different height on different screens. That is expected: SharePoint calculates height from the available screen width and responsive layout.
- A logo will not upload as SVG. Group-connected sites do not allow SVG for the logo or logo thumbnail. Use PNG or JPEG for those slots.
- A thumbnail shows the wrong part of the image. Override the automatically selected thumbnail and set the focal point on the source image where the control is available.
- A gallery tile has an unexpected shape. Check the gallery layout. Brick and Carousel preserve source ratios, while Grid offers 1:1, 16:9, and 4:3 choices.

Choose SharePoint image dimensions from the destination outward: identify the web part and column, use the recommended source width, match the supported ratio, protect the focal subject, and verify the result at narrow and wide viewports. The numbers are dependable starting points, but responsive cropping—not a universal pixel size—determines what readers finally see.
