Yes, you can accept monthly or other recurring payments in WordPress without building a billing system yourself. You combine a subscription-capable WordPress plugin or extension with a merchant account and a payment gateway that explicitly supports automatic renewals. Use WooCommerce Subscriptions for a product-and-order store, WP Simple Pay for focused Stripe payment forms, or MemberPress for recurring memberships and gated content.
The choice affects checkout, renewals, cancellations, payment-method changes, taxes, webhooks, and customer emails, so select the architecture before creating a plan.

Choose the right recurring-payment architecture
Installing a payment form alone does not create recurring billing or a merchant account. The plugin manages plans, customers, orders or memberships; the gateway authorizes and charges the payment method on the schedule you configure.

When WooCommerce Subscriptions is the better choice
WooCommerce describes Subscriptions as “a premium extension that allows you to sell products and services with recurring payments.” Choose it when each subscription must behave like a WooCommerce order—for example, a physical delivery, a service renewal with invoices, or a plan that uses coupons, shipping and customer accounts. Its documented renewal process is covered in WooCommerce’s renewal process documentation.

When WP Simple Pay is enough
WP Simple Pay is the leaner route when you want a Stripe-powered form on a service, donation or course page and do not need WooCommerce’s catalog and order machinery. Its documentation says the subscriptions feature requires WP Simple Pay Pro and a connected Stripe account. The WordPress.org listing describes recurring Stripe payments, plan selection and next-renewal tracking. Confirm the current Pro tier and Stripe requirements before purchase because plugin plans can change.
When MemberPress fits best
MemberPress is membership-first. Create a membership price and term—such as a recurring charge every month—then use that membership to control access to posts, courses, downloads or a community. Compare it on protected-content rules and member lifecycle rather than on shipping, product variations or warehouse-style order handling.
What you need before accepting a renewal
- A WordPress subscription plugin or extension that matches your store, form or membership model.
- A merchant account such as Stripe or a PayPal Business account, with identity and risk reviews completed.
- A subscription-capable gateway integration. A gateway that only accepts one-time charges cannot create automatic renewals.
- Accurate plan terms: amount, billing interval, trial, sign-up fee, tax treatment and cancellation policy.
- Webhook or callback configuration when the gateway requires it, so payment events can update orders or memberships.
- Customer-facing renewal information and operational emails for successful, failed, cancelled and refunded payments.
How to set up automatic recurring payments in WordPress
- Classify the site. Decide whether you need a full store, a focused payment form or a gated-membership system. This determines whether you install WooCommerce Subscriptions, WP Simple Pay or MemberPress.
- Check compatibility. Read the current plugin or extension requirements for your WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP and gateway versions. Confirm that your selected gateway supports automatic renewals and the controls you need before committing to a plan.
- Open and approve the merchant account. Create the required Stripe or PayPal Business account, submit identity and risk information, and enable the account for live charges. The WordPress plugin cannot substitute for this approval.
- Connect the gateway and enable recurring mode. Add the gateway credentials in the plugin’s payment settings. Turn on automatic renewal where the integration exposes that setting, and complete any webhook or callback setup specified by the gateway.
- Create the plan. Enter the recurring amount and interval, then define any trial, sign-up fee, taxes and cancellation rules. Decide whether customers can change plans, pause, cancel or update their payment method.
- Publish a transparent checkout. Show the amount charged at sign-up, the renewal frequency, the expected next billing date, how the amount may change, and how to cancel. Make the renewal terms visible before the customer submits payment.
- Run the documented test flow. In the gateway’s test environment, verify initial payment, a successful renewal, a failed payment, cancellation, refund and customer emails. Confirm that the corresponding order or membership status changes in WordPress before switching to live mode.
Automatic versus manual renewals
Automatic renewal charges the saved payment method at each interval without customer intervention. Manual renewal creates the next renewal order but requires the customer to return and pay it. WooCommerce documents both models in its Subscriptions documentation; the available model depends on the gateway and its integration.
Automatic billing is convenient, but it also makes failed-payment handling, expired cards, customer notifications and cancellation controls essential. If a gateway does not support the subscription operation you need, use manual renewals or select another gateway rather than assuming the plugin can work around the limitation.

Stripe, PayPal and other gateway considerations
Stripe
Stripe is the focused gateway for WP Simple Pay and is also available through WooCommerce integrations. Confirm that the integration supports the payment methods and subscription controls you intend to offer, not merely one-time card payments.
PayPal in WooCommerce
WooCommerce’s PayPal integration describes two different approaches. PayPal Subscriptions use fixed schedules and amounts, with limitations including fixed billing cycles and restrictions on mixed carts. PayPal Vaulting with Reference Transactions stores the PayPal account for future charges and allows more flexible renewal changes, but Reference Transactions require PayPal approval.
Those methods are not interchangeable. Select the one that matches whether you need fixed terms or changes such as a different renewal amount, and verify the current extension compatibility before launch.
Other WooCommerce gateways
WooCommerce lists automatic-recurring support for WooPayments, Stripe, PayPal Payments, Square and additional marketplace extensions. Support is not identical: suspension, cancellation, reactivation, trials, payment-method changes, multiple subscriptions and flexible renewal amounts can differ by gateway. Check the current compatibility matrix and extension version for every operation your business needs.
Subscription controls to confirm before launch
- Pause and resume: Can a customer temporarily stop billing and restart without creating a new subscription?
- Cancellation: Does cancellation stop the next charge immediately, at period end, or through a support request?
- Plan changes: Can customers switch intervals or tiers, and how are prorated amounts handled?
- Payment-method updates: Can the customer replace an expired card or change from one supported method to another?
- Multiple subscriptions: Can one account hold more than one active plan?
- Failed payments: What retry, notification and access-removal behavior does the gateway and plugin provide?
- Refunds and taxes: Do refunds update the order or membership status, and where are tax calculations and invoices managed?
Common setup failures and fixes
The form accepts a payment but no renewal is scheduled
Check that the plan is configured as recurring, the connected gateway account is approved for subscriptions, and automatic-renewal mode is enabled. A one-time payment form cannot be converted into a recurring charge by changing its label.
Renewals remain pending in WordPress
Review the gateway’s webhook or callback endpoint, event permissions and delivery log. Confirm that the site can receive the gateway’s renewal event and that the plugin’s connection uses the same account as the original transaction.
Customers cannot change or cancel a subscription
Compare the requested control with the gateway’s documented capabilities. Some integrations support cancellation but not pausing, switching or payment-method changes; PayPal Subscriptions, for example, use fixed schedules and amounts.
A renewal fails after a successful sign-up
Use the gateway’s test scenario for an expired or declined payment, then verify the retry schedule, customer email and WordPress status transition. Do not promise uninterrupted access unless your failed-payment policy and automation are configured and verified.

Use WooCommerce Subscriptions when recurring charges belong to a full product-and-order store, WP Simple Pay Pro when a focused Stripe form is all you need, and MemberPress when payment is primarily a key to protected content. In every case, validate the gateway’s current automatic-renewal compatibility, complete merchant approval and webhook setup, publish unambiguous billing terms, and test the entire renewal lifecycle before accepting live subscriptions.
