Windows’ built-in screenshot program is Snipping Tool. For a fast region capture, press Windows+Shift+S. For an image copied to the clipboard, press Print Screen (or Alt+PrtScn for the active window). On supported keyboards, Windows+PrtScn saves a full-screen image in Pictures > Screenshots. Snipping Tool also provides rectangular, freeform, window, full-screen, and video capture modes.
The important distinction is the destination: Print Screen and Alt+PrtScn copy pixels for pasting, while Snipping Tool’s Save control and Windows+PrtScn create files. The exact behavior can vary with your Windows version, keyboard, and settings.
What is Windows’ default screenshot program?
Snipping Tool is Microsoft’s built-in utility for still screenshots and, in supported versions, short video snips. It can capture a freeform outline, a rectangle, one window, or the entire screen. After a still capture, the result opens in Snipping Tool for changes, saving, and sharing.
Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not every feature is available on every device. In particular, the documentation marks Perfect Screenshot and Color picker as features for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. Video capture is a separate mode from still screenshots.

Choose the capture method that matches your goal

Microsoft documents the shortcut behavior in its Windows keyboard-shortcut reference and its Print Screen guidance.
Take a screenshot of a selected region
- Press Windows+Shift+S. The display dims and the Snipping Tool overlay appears.
- Choose the available still-capture mode if you do not want the default rectangular selection.
- Drag around the content you need. Release the pointer to complete the snip.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or app view to make changes, save the image, or share it.
This is the quickest method when you need only one part of a browser page, document, or app. Because the shortcut opens an overlay rather than immediately writing a named file, use the Save control if you need a permanent image.
Capture a full screen, window, or freeform shape
Full-screen still
Open Snipping Tool, select Full screen, and take the capture. Microsoft describes full-screen capture as immediate; the result is then available in Snipping Tool for saving or sharing.
One window
Choose Window in Snipping Tool and select the window you want. This avoids manually trimming neighboring windows. For a clipboard-only active-window image, press Alt+PrtScn instead.

Select the freeform mode and outline the area with the pointer. This is useful when a rectangular crop would include unrelated content. The resulting image follows the same Snipping Tool editing and saving workflow.

Use the keyboard shortcuts directly
Print Screen: copy the whole display
Press Print Screen to copy the screen to the clipboard, then paste it into an image editor, document, message, or other app. This shortcut does not by itself give you a filename or folder.
Alt+PrtScn: copy only the active window
Activate the window you want and press Alt+PrtScn. Windows copies that window’s image to the clipboard. Paste it wherever you need it.
Windows+PrtScn: save a full-screen file
On supported hardware and configurations, press Windows+PrtScn. Microsoft directs users to Pictures > Screenshots for the resulting files. If your keyboard lacks a PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn+Windows+Space as a possible hardware-dependent alternative.
Windows+Shift+S: open the snipping overlay
This shortcut is the practical default for selecting a region or switching between still-capture modes. Microsoft also documents Print Screen as a way to open screen snipping when that behavior is enabled in Windows.
Where does Windows save screenshots?
Images made with Windows+PrtScn
Open File Explorer and browse to Pictures > Screenshots. If the folder is empty, your keyboard may not support the shortcut in the expected way, or your device may be using a different Print Screen configuration.

These shortcuts copy pixels to the clipboard. Paste the image into another application and save it there; there is no destination file until you do so.
Images made in Snipping Tool
Use Snipping Tool’s Save control to choose a filename and location. Current Microsoft guidance also documents automatic-save behavior and a setting for changing it; the available controls can differ by Windows build. Record a short screen video
- Open Snipping Tool and choose Record, or press Windows+Shift+R.
- Select New, then drag over the rectangular area to record.
- Start the recording and stop it when the demonstration is complete.
- Save the clip or open it in Clipchamp, as offered by the Snipping Tool workflow.
Video snips are distinct from still screenshots. The shortcut and controls are version-sensitive, so an older Windows installation may not show the Record option.
Keyboard, settings, and edition caveats
- Print Screen can be configurable. Microsoft’s shortcut reference says the key can be set to open screen snipping instead of behaving only as a clipboard key. If pressing it produces a different result, check your current Windows keyboard settings.
- Not every keyboard has PrtScn. Laptop and compact keyboards may require a hardware combination such as Fn+Windows+Space; the exact key labeling is manufacturer-dependent.
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 are both covered by Microsoft’s instructions. The support pages do not attach a dated product-version number, so labels and feature availability may change with updates.
- Copilot+ restrictions apply to some tools. Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are identified as Copilot+ PC features in the current Windows 11 documentation. Their absence on another PC is not necessarily an installation problem.
Troubleshoot a screenshot that did not work
The shortcut does nothing
- Try opening Snipping Tool from Windows and selecting a mode manually.
- If the keyboard has no dedicated PrtScn key, try the hardware-dependent alternative documented by Microsoft: Fn+Windows+Space.
- Check whether Print Screen has been configured to open screen snipping rather than copy directly.
The image is not in Pictures > Screenshots
That folder is associated with Windows+PrtScn, not ordinary Print Screen or Alt+PrtScn clipboard captures. Paste clipboard captures into an app and save them, or use Snipping Tool’s Save control.
You captured the wrong window
For Alt+PrtScn, click the intended window first so it is active. For a more deliberate selection, use Snipping Tool’s Window mode and choose the target window from the overlay.

Record is missing
Video capture is version-sensitive. Update Windows and Snipping Tool through your normal Windows update channels, or use still capture if the Record mode is not present. Microsoft’s current instructions identify Windows+Shift+R as the video shortcut.

Perfect Screenshot and Color picker are documented as limited to Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs. On other hardware, use the standard rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen modes.
When a local screenshot is not the right tool
Snipping Tool captures what is visible on your Windows desktop. It is therefore appropriate for a person at a keyboard, but it is not a server-side URL renderer or a batch capture service. If you need repeatable captures of webpages from code, an API avoids opening a browser window on each machine.
