For most Windows 11 screenshots, press Windows key + Shift + S. Drag over the area you want; Windows copies the capture to the clipboard and opens it in Snipping Tool for markup or sharing.
Use Windows key + Print Screen when you want the entire screen saved immediately as a file in PicturesScreenshots. Use Alt + Print Screen for only the active window, copied to the clipboard. If your keyboard has no Print Screen key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible hardware-dependent alternative.
Windows 11 screenshot shortcuts at a glance
| What you need | Shortcut | What happens | Destination |
|---|---|---|---|
| A selected region | Windows key + Shift + S | Starts screen snipping so you can select an area | Clipboard; the result can be opened in Snipping Tool |
| The entire screen saved as a file | Windows key + Print Screen | Captures the full screen automatically | PicturesScreenshots |
| Only the active window | Alt + Print Screen | Captures the window currently in focus | Clipboard |
| A keyboard without Print Screen | Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar | Possible screenshot command listed by Microsoft | Depends on the device and keyboard firmware |
| Screen snipping from Print Screen | Print Screen | Can open screen snipping when the related setting is enabled | Usually the snipping workflow and clipboard |
The important distinction is not just the key combination but the output: some shortcuts copy an image for you to paste, while Windows key + Print Screen writes a file without an extra save step.
Capture part of the desktop with Windows + Shift + S
- Press Windows key + Shift + S.
- When the screen-snipping interface appears, drag across the region you want to capture.
- Release the mouse or trackpad button. Windows places the image on the clipboard.
- Select the Snipping Tool notification or open Snipping Tool to mark up, save, or share the image.
This is the best default shortcut for documentation, bug reports, and anything where you do not want the rest of the desktop visible. Because the result is a clipboard capture, it is not yet a permanent file. Paste it into an editor, message, document, or image application and save it there.

If the selection overlay does not appear
Make sure you are pressing the Windows logo key, Shift, and S together rather than the Windows key and S (which opens search). On a compact keyboard, check whether the Fn layer changes the behavior of the letter keys. If the shortcut still does nothing, use the Print Screen setting described below or the full-screen file shortcut.
Save the entire screen directly with Windows + Print Screen
- Press Windows key + Print Screen. The key may be labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or a similar abbreviation.
- Open File Explorer and go to Pictures > Screenshots.
- Open the newest image, or copy it to another folder before editing.
Microsoft documents this combination as a full-screen capture saved in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures. It is the quickest choice when you need a file immediately and do not want to paste from the clipboard.
If your keyboard requires the Fn layer for Print Screen, try Fn + Windows key + Print Screen. The exact behavior is hardware-dependent, so consult the keyboard or laptop documentation if that combination does not create a file.
Capture only the active window with Alt + Print Screen
- Click the window you want so it is the active, focused window.
- Press Alt + Print Screen.
- Paste the image into Paint, an email, a document, or another application with Ctrl + V, then save it.
This avoids exposing other windows or the desktop. Microsoft describes the result as a clipboard capture, so do not look for it automatically in PicturesScreenshots.

Configure what the Print Screen key does
On current Windows 11 installations, the standalone Print Screen key can be configured to open screen snipping. To check the setting, open:
Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
Find Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Turn it on if you want Print Screen to launch the snipping interface; turn it off if you prefer the key’s traditional behavior on your hardware. This setting changes the standalone key, not the documented Windows + Print Screen and Alt + Print Screen combinations.
What to do when there is no Print Screen key
Try the hardware-dependent Fn shortcut
Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as a possible alternative on keyboards without Print Screen. It is not universal: laptop makers can assign different functions to Fn combinations, and an Fn-lock state can change which layer is active.
Use Windows + Shift + S instead
Windows + Shift + S does not require a dedicated Print Screen key and is the most consistent built-in method for selecting an area.

Surface keyboards
Some Surface keyboards include a dedicated Snipping key. Microsoft also identifies Windows logo key + Shift + S for Surface devices, so the standard shortcut remains the portable option.
Choose the shortcut by the result you need
- Need a cropped image: Windows + Shift + S.
- Need a complete desktop image already saved: Windows + Print Screen.
- Need one application window: Alt + Print Screen.
- Need a mouse-driven snipping workflow from one key: enable Print Screen under Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Have no Print Screen key: use Windows + Shift + S, then test Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar if your hardware supports it.
Clipboard captures versus saved files
A clipboard capture is temporary working data. Pasting it into another application is the handoff that lets you annotate, attach, or save it. A subsequent copy operation can replace the clipboard image, so save important captures before continuing with other copy-and-paste work.
A Windows + Print Screen capture is already a file under PicturesScreenshots. If you cannot find it, check that you are viewing the Windows account’s Pictures folder rather than a different user’s folder or a redirected location. Search File Explorer for the Screenshots folder and sort by date.
Troubleshooting common failures
Nothing happens after Windows + Shift + S
- Press all three keys together and confirm you are using the Windows logo key.
- Try the shortcut from the desktop and from an ordinary application to rule out an application-specific keyboard remapping.
- Use the Start menu to open Snipping Tool directly, then capture from its interface.
Windows + Print Screen does not create a file
- Check whether Print Screen is a secondary key requiring Fn.
- Try Fn + Windows key + Print Screen, then inspect PicturesScreenshots.
- Use Windows + Shift + S and save the clipboard result manually if the hardware combination is unsupported.
Print Screen opens the wrong interface
Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review Use the Print Screen button to open screen snipping. Its state determines whether the standalone key starts screen snipping.

Alt + Print Screen captures the wrong window
Click the target window first. The shortcut captures the active window, not necessarily the window you can see most clearly or the one under the pointer.
The Fn alternative is unreliable
Fn behavior varies by keyboard. Check for an Fn-lock indicator, test the combination with and without Fn lock, and use Windows + Shift + S when you need a device-independent method.
The image contains information you did not intend to share
Prefer Windows + Shift + S for a selected region or Alt + Print Screen for one application. Review the image before sending it, especially when the desktop contains notifications, account names, or other windows.

Practical checklist
- For a region, press Windows + Shift + S.
- For a file of the whole screen, press Windows + Print Screen and open PicturesScreenshots.
- For one window, focus it and press Alt + Print Screen, then paste.
- If Print Screen is missing, try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar, but expect hardware differences.
- If Print Screen launches an unexpected tool, review Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the Windows shortcuts without installing another screenshot app?
Yes. Windows 11 supplies the region, full-screen, active-window, and configurable Print Screen workflows described above; no separate screenshot utility is required.
Which shortcut should I use when I need the image as a file immediately?
Use Windows key + Print Screen. It writes the full-screen capture to the PicturesScreenshots folder instead of leaving the result only on the clipboard.
