For one audio file, add WordPress’s Audio block. For a set of tracks in one player, add the Playlist block, then upload or select the audio files and choose which track details to display. The Playlist block is documented as built in for WordPress 7.1 and later.
Choose the right WordPress block
| What you need | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play one audio file in a post or page | Audio block | Provides an individual audio player. |
| Play several tracks from one player | Playlist block | Shows a collection of tracks; visitors can select tracks and seek through playback. |
| Let visitors download a file | File block | Use this when the goal is a download link rather than inline audio playback. See the WordPress File block documentation. |
The Audio block can use an uploaded file, a Media Library file, or an audio URL. The Playlist workflow uses uploaded files or tracks already in the Media Library. WordPress’s Playlist block documentation identifies the block as available by default in WordPress 7.1 or later.
Add one audio file to a post or page
- In the block editor, open the post or page where the audio should appear. Select the inserter to add an Audio block, or type
/audioin a new paragraph and choose the block. - Choose Upload to add a new file, Media Library to select an existing file, or Insert from URL to use audio hosted at a URL.
- Add or edit a caption if you want one displayed with the player.
- In the block settings, adjust autoplay, loop, and preload if needed.
Choose a preload setting deliberately
Preload determines how much audio the browser fetches as the page loads. WordPress documents three choices: Auto downloads the entire file before a visitor presses play and can affect page-load speed, especially for large files; Metadata fetches basic information; and None delays downloading the audio until the visitor presses Play. The documentation describes None as the fastest setting.
Create a playlist with multiple tracks
- In the block editor, open the post or page and insert a Playlist block, or type
/playlistand select it. - Upload one or more audio files, or choose existing files from the Media Library. Each selected file becomes a track.
- Use the settings sidebar to choose the track order or shuffle playback.
- Choose whether to show artwork, artist, track number, and track length.
- Optionally adjust waveform appearance and colors.
The player supports seeking, and visitors can choose tracks from the list. WordPress’s Playlist block reference lists track attributes including title, artist, album, length, image, and image alt text.

Fix missing track details or artwork
Track title, artist, or other details are missing
Check the audio file’s metadata and its fields in the Media Library. Then confirm that the Playlist block’s display settings enable the details you want to show. The Playlist block’s available track attributes are described in the developer reference.
Artwork does not appear
Attach an image to the audio file and enable the Playlist block’s Show images option. The image and its alt text are among the playlist track attributes documented by WordPress.

A file will not play
WordPress’s Audio block documentation says unsupported file types trigger an error, but it does not provide a complete compatibility table. Check the file and your site’s hosting environment rather than assuming every audio format is supported.
