Choose WordPress.com for a managed site with your own brand, stronger design and SEO controls, and room to add features. Choose self-hosted WordPress.org when maximum ownership and technical control outweigh the work of managing hosting, updates, security, and backups.
A practical compromise is to publish the canonical article on WordPress first, then use Medium’s import tool for additional reach.
“WordPress” can mean two different products
The choice is not simply WordPress versus Medium. WordPress.com is a hosted service: hosting and maintenance are bundled into plans. WordPress.org is open-source software that you install on hosting you obtain separately. That distinction changes setup, cost, support, and technical responsibility.

WordPress.com supplies hosting, automatic updates, and a managed dashboard. It offers a free tier plus paid plans whose storage, design, SEO, plugin, and monetization features differ.

When WordPress.com is the better choice
You want a branded site without running a server
WordPress.com combines hosting and maintenance with a site builder. Its included basics list hosting, automatic updates, unlimited pages and posts, unlimited users, and seven-day traffic statistics. You can use a personalized domain and build more than a chronological stream of essays: portfolios, service pages, newsletters, membership areas, and business sections can live on the same site.
You need more presentation and growth options than Medium allows
WordPress.com provides a larger design vocabulary, media embeds, social-sharing tools, and SEO settings. Plugins are available on eligible plans, so the site can gain forms, commerce, memberships, or specialized publishing functions as requirements grow.

Trade-offs to budget for
- The free tier is not equivalent to every paid WordPress.com plan or to self-hosted WordPress.
- Storage, plugins, advanced SEO, commerce, and marketing can require a higher plan, so total cost may rise as the site becomes more ambitious.
- More settings create a steeper learning curve than Medium’s deliberately narrow writing interface.
When self-hosted WordPress.org is worth the work
Choose it for control and long-term portability
Self-hosted WordPress gives you the widest control over themes, plugins, code, analytics, SEO, advertising, memberships, and hosting. Because the software is open source and the domain and site data are under your control, it is the strongest fit for a publication, business, or creator who wants to avoid being limited by one hosted platform.

- Purchase and renew hosting and a domain separately.
- Apply core, theme, and plugin updates and resolve compatibility problems.
- Maintain backups, security protections, performance, and recovery procedures.
- Arrange technical support yourself or pay a managed host or developer.
This option is not automatically better for a writer who wants to publish immediately; its advantage is control, not simplicity.
When Medium is the better choice
Fast, focused publishing
Medium removes most infrastructure decisions. You write, format, and publish in a consistent editor, while Medium handles hosting and the surrounding reading experience. That makes it particularly effective for essays, commentary, technical explainers, and a personal writing practice where maintaining a separate site would be a distraction.
Distribution is built in
Medium members, publications, feeds, and digests can introduce a story to readers who do not already know your name. This is an important advantage over a new standalone site, whose author must build search visibility and promotion channels from scratch. It is distribution, not a ranking guarantee: content quality, links, implementation, and promotion still affect search results.
Platform limits are deliberate
- Medium keeps a consistent visual system instead of offering WordPress-level theme and plugin freedom.
- Its policies restrict injecting advertising, tracking code, or other changes that alter the platform experience.
- Third-party advertising and sponsorships in stories and publications are prohibited; you may promote your own products, mailing list, or events.
- A custom domain requires an active membership and remains subject to Medium’s rules. Medium supports one custom domain for a profile or publication.
How monetization actually differs
Medium Partner Program
The Partner Program pays eligible writers according to activity and engagement from Medium members, rather than a guaranteed amount per article or per view. Medium’s terms effective June 1, 2026 describe locked stories earning according to member performance, and Medium can change or discontinue the program.

- An active Medium membership.
- At least one published story.
- A complete profile.
- Age 18 or older.
- An eligible bank and tax residence.
- Agreement to the current Partner Program terms.
Income therefore depends on both eligibility and audience engagement; it should not be treated as predictable salary.

WordPress monetization
WordPress monetization is modular. Depending on the product and plan, you can add payments, subscriptions, donations, advertising, or plugins for commerce and memberships. Self-hosted WordPress lets you select the providers and retain more control, while WordPress.com packages capabilities by plan.
WordPress.com’s statement that eligible referral activity can earn “up to 50% revenue share” describes a partner opportunity, not a guaranteed percentage of your publishing income.

What a Medium custom domain does—and does not—provide
A custom domain can make a Medium profile or publication easier to brand, but it does not turn Medium into a fully programmable site. Medium says Google Analytics and arbitrary code cannot be added to that domain. If you change URLs, search engines may take up to a few weeks to process the change.
Use WordPress as the canonical home
Medium’s official import tool can bring in a post from another site, automatically backdate it to the original publication date, and add a canonical link to the original source. The author must have rights to the material. A WordPress-first workflow therefore works well when your domain should remain the permanent archive while Medium supplies additional discovery.
- Publish and verify the article on your WordPress site first.
- In Medium, use the import function for the existing post rather than manually pasting a new copy.
- Check that the imported story shows the original date and canonical link.
- Keep the WordPress URL stable; changing domains or slugs can trigger a period while search engines update their records.
No platform guarantees search rankings. Canonicalization reduces duplicate-content ambiguity, but links, technical quality, useful content, and promotion still determine performance.
Which platform fits your situation?
Choose Medium if you are starting with writing, not a website
It is the strongest fit when you want to publish today, avoid maintenance, and benefit from an existing member ecosystem. It also suits a secondary distribution channel for material whose primary home is elsewhere.
Choose WordPress.com for a managed personal or professional site
Pick it when your blog needs a recognizable domain, multiple page types, stronger design control, analytics and SEO options, or a path toward subscriptions, services, or commerce without administering a server.
