You can run a Windows 11 PC without a permanently attached monitor by setting up remote access and preventing the computer from sleeping while you need it. For a graphical desktop, Microsoft’s documented Remote Desktop host requires Windows 11 Pro. For command-line administration, use OpenSSH; PowerShell remoting can use SSH or Windows-native WinRM. Configure and test access while you can still reach the PC locally, then verify it reconnects after a restart.
What “headless” means for a Windows 11 PC
Here, headless means operating a PC without a monitor permanently connected while retaining a reliable way to administer it remotely. It does not guarantee that every PC will boot, display graphics, wake from sleep, or recover from a power loss identically. Those behaviors can depend on the specific hardware, firmware, and network.
Choose a remote-access method based on what you need to do:
- Remote Desktop: a remote graphical desktop; Microsoft requires the PC being controlled (the host) to run Windows 11 Pro.
- OpenSSH: secure remote sign-in and command-line control, including access from non-Windows clients.
- PowerShell remoting: remote PowerShell commands and sessions, using either Windows-native WinRM/WS-Management or SSH.
A monitor being off is not the same as the computer sleeping. Remote access generally requires the PC to be on, awake, connected to the network, and listening for the chosen connection.

Prepare the PC before removing its monitor
- Confirm the edition if you need Remote Desktop. In Settings, check the Windows specifications under About. The PC you connect to must be Windows 11 Pro for Microsoft’s documented Remote Desktop hosting path. Windows Home does not meet that stated host requirement.
- Choose a network path. The host must remain connected to a network that your client can reach. Test from the network where you will actually administer it. Do not assume a service exposed on a local network is reachable from elsewhere; follow your organization’s network and security policies.
- Set up and test remote access locally. Keep local access available until you have successfully connected from the intended client. Record the PC name or other connection details, and confirm you can sign in with an account authorized for the selected method.
- Configure power behavior. Review Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Screen-off settings can be used independently of sleep settings. Set a sleep timeout that suits unattended access. On a laptop, review what closing the lid does; Windows exposes lid and power-button behavior through Power Options. Windows 11 power settings and sleep, shutdown, and lid behavior.
- Test the unattended case. With the intended power settings, restart the PC and reconnect remotely. If you expect recovery after a power interruption or remote wake from sleep, test those specific cases on this hardware before relying on them.
Set up Remote Desktop for a graphical desktop
Use this route when you want to control the Windows desktop rather than work only in a shell. The steps below follow Microsoft’s Windows 11 Remote Desktop path; the target PC must be Pro.
- On the target PC, open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
- Turn on Remote Desktop and confirm the prompt if Windows displays one.
- Note the PC name shown on that page; you will use it when connecting.
- From the client, open a Remote Desktop client and connect using that PC name. Sign in with an account permitted to access the host.
- Test the connection before leaving the PC unattended. If the client cannot find the host, check that both devices have a working network path and that the target is awake.
Microsoft’s instructions cover connecting from Windows Remote Desktop Connection and Windows App on supported Apple clients. The connecting device can run Windows Home or a different operating system; the Pro requirement applies to the host. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop guide for client-specific connection steps.
Does Windows 11 Home support Remote Desktop?
Windows 11 Home does not meet Microsoft’s stated requirement for a PC hosting a Remote Desktop connection. A Home PC can be used as the connecting client, but for a graphical session hosted by a Windows PC, the documented host requirement is Pro. Use OpenSSH or PowerShell remoting if a command-line workflow meets your needs instead.

Set up OpenSSH for remote command-line access
Microsoft describes OpenSSH as a remote sign-in tool that uses SSH and encrypts traffic between client and server. Its Windows 11 setup documentation lists an administrator account and PowerShell 5.1 or later among the prerequisites. Follow the current Microsoft setup page if the OpenSSH Server capability is not installed on your PC.

- On the Windows 11 target, open PowerShell as an administrator.
- Install the OpenSSH Server Feature on Demand if it is not already installed. Microsoft’s OpenSSH setup instructions give the supported installation steps.
- Start the service with
Start-Service sshd. - To have the service start after a reboot, configure its startup type as Automatic in the Services management interface or with the documented service-management commands.
- Check that the OpenSSH Server inbound firewall rule exists and allows TCP port 22 for the network scope you intend to use. Avoid broadening firewall access beyond what your network requires.
- From another device with an SSH client, connect to the Windows host using its reachable name or address and an authorized account. Confirm that you can run a simple command before removing local access.
If your host’s firewall profile or policy differs from the documented defaults, verify the effective inbound rule rather than assuming that starting sshd makes the machine reachable. The Microsoft page covers the Windows service and firewall setup.
Use PowerShell remoting over SSH or WinRM
SSH transport
PowerShell remoting over SSH is useful when you want PowerShell sessions across platforms or prefer SSH authentication. Microsoft’s SSH remoting guidance requires an SSH client and server and PowerShell 6 or later for this feature; connections can authenticate with a password or SSH private key. Follow its configuration instructions on both sides before using PowerShell session and command cmdlets. One limitation to account for: SSH remoting does not currently support remote endpoint configuration or Just Enough Administration. Read Microsoft’s SSH remoting requirements and configuration.

WinRM transport
WinRM uses WS-Management, the established Windows remoting transport. To enable a Windows target to receive remoting connections, run Enable-PSRemoting from elevated PowerShell, following Microsoft’s guidance for the applicable network profile and firewall scope. Do not treat this as a universal firewall-opening command: the machine’s network profile and policy determine what is appropriate. Review Microsoft’s remote requirements before enabling it, particularly on networks you do not control.
Keep a headless PC awake and reachable
Use Windows power settings to separate display behavior from sleep behavior. You can let the screen turn off while keeping the PC awake for remote administration. If the computer sleeps, ordinary remote connections may not reach it until it wakes.

- For a laptop, check the lid-close action in Power Options if it will operate closed. The lid action can trigger sleep independently of the screen timeout.
- Consider what happens after restart, updates, or loss of power. A remote service can only help after Windows is running and the network path is available.
Wake-on-LAN, firmware settings, and startup-after-power-loss behavior vary by device. The cited Windows guidance does not provide a universal BIOS recipe for headless operation. Test the actual machine and its firmware before relying on remote wake or unattended recovery.

Troubleshoot common connection failures

Do I need a display dummy plug?
The Microsoft setup guidance cited here does not establish a dummy plug as generally necessary. Whether one is useful depends on the specific hardware and workload; test the target PC rather than assuming it is required.
Which option should I choose for scripts?
For command-line sign-in, OpenSSH is a direct option. For remote PowerShell commands or sessions, choose SSH or WinRM based on the authentication, compatibility, and administrative controls your environment requires.
