For Apple product pages, prepare up to 10 screenshots in the device classes your app supports. For Google Play app listings, provide at least four screenshots at a minimum 1080-pixel resolution: portrait images should be at least 1080×1920 (9:16), and landscape images at least 1920×1080 (16:9).
This guide explains what effective examples look like, how to plan each frame, which dimensions and formats to export, and how to capture a reliable set for review and store submission.
What an effective app screenshot example looks like
The strongest examples are not decorative posters. They make the interface recognizable and answer a user question quickly: what can I do with this app? A useful frame contains the current, real interface in a realistic state, a clear focal point, and a short benefit statement that remains readable on a phone.
- Real UI: Show the actual screen, data state, navigation, and controls a user will encounter. Google Play requires screenshots to depict the actual in-app experience.
- One job per frame: Assign each image one message, such as starting a task, completing the main workflow, using a differentiating feature, or seeing the result.
- Strong opening: Put the feature that best expresses your value proposition first. Do not spend the first image on a splash screen or settings page.
- Readable composition: Keep the key control and the main subject inside a safe area. Use enough contrast and large enough type that the message survives a small listing preview.
- Consistent system: Reuse the same device treatment, typography, colors, margins, and caption position across the set.

How many images can you use?
App Store Connect accepts one to ten JPEG, JPG, or PNG screenshots for a product page. The required device classes depend on the devices your app supports, so an iPhone-only app should not be planned like a universal iPhone-and-iPad app. Apple associates screenshot sets with a locale and display target; missing a required asset can cause a submission error.

These dimensions are current examples, not a universal substitute for checking the device slots shown in App Store Connect. Export each required target at its specified size and keep the same story while adapting layout to the larger canvas.
Apple-oriented sequence example
- Promise: Show the primary result, such as a completed plan, edited image, or saved document, with a concise benefit caption.
- First-use path: Show the shortest route from opening the app to achieving that result.
- Differentiator: Highlight the feature competitors or generic alternatives do not provide.
- Control and flexibility: Show customization, automation, or integrations only if they matter to the buying decision.
- Confidence: Use a frame for sharing, accessibility, privacy controls, or another trust cue when it is genuinely visible in the product.
Apple describes screenshots as one of the most effective ways to communicate an app’s value and recommends leading with the best features. Keep captions short and let the interface carry the evidence.
Google Play screenshot examples and requirements
Minimum quantity and resolution
For apps, Google Play requires at least four screenshots with a minimum 1080-pixel resolution. Use portrait images of at least 1080×1920 (9:16) or landscape images of at least 1920×1080 (16:9). Build the set around the phone or tablet context represented by your listing rather than mixing unrelated device frames.

- The core workflow in progress, with the important action visible.
- A distinctive feature shown in its real state.
- The completed result, collaboration view, accessibility option, or another reason to choose the app.
If you upload more than four, continue the user journey instead of repeating the same dashboard from slightly different angles. Ensure every image still depicts the in-app experience.
A reusable storyboard for app screenshot examples
Before capturing anything, write one sentence for each frame. The sentence should describe the user benefit, not a design instruction.

Use fewer images when the product has fewer meaningful states. Ten nearly identical frames weaken the story.
How to design each frame
Keep the interface dominant
Place the real screen at the visual center. Device bezels, gradients, and decorative backgrounds can establish a system, but they should not hide controls or replace the product. Crop only when the crop preserves the action a viewer must understand.

Write captions for scanning
Use a short headline and, when needed, one supporting line. Prefer “Plan a week in seconds” to “Advanced productivity management solution.” Avoid tiny paragraphs, unexplained feature names, and claims the screen cannot prove. Keep text clear of navigation bars, camera cutouts, and other areas that may be clipped or obscured.
Use realistic states
Populate the app with believable names, dates, images, and completed actions. Empty states can be useful for an onboarding frame, but a gallery made entirely of empty screens does not demonstrate value. Remove personal or confidential information before exporting.
Localize deliberately
Apple ties screenshot sets to a locale. If your app supports multiple languages, plan translated captions and screenshots rather than allowing text to overflow or relying on an English image in every market. Check longer translated strings at the final pixel size.
DIY capture workflow
- List required targets: In App Store Connect and Google Play Console, note each required device class, orientation, quantity, format, and pixel size.
- Prepare deterministic app data: Create a seed account or fixture with realistic content. Disable notifications and remove personal data.
- Capture the source screens: Run the app on simulators, emulators, or physical devices at the target viewport. Capture the full screen without browser chrome or unrelated overlays.
- Compose the story: Place each capture in a consistent template. Keep the focal control and caption inside safe margins.
- Check legibility: Review the exported file at listing-thumbnail size and at 100 percent. Confirm that buttons, contrast, and captions remain understandable.
- Export variants: Save JPEG, JPG, or PNG files as accepted by the Apple target, and the required Google Play dimensions and orientation. Name files by platform, device, locale, and sequence.
- Run a submission check: Verify quantity, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, file format, language, and that every frame still shows the current app build.
Capturing app screens from a web app
If your “app” is a responsive web app or web-based prototype, set the browser viewport to the store target, wait for fonts and images to finish loading, dismiss consent UI, and capture the page after the primary state is visible. Test a fresh session as well as a returning session: cookie banners, chat widgets, and delayed network requests can change the composition.
For repeatable work, record the URL, viewport, device scale, locale, user agent, cookies, wait condition, and capture date alongside each source image. That metadata makes a later regeneration possible when the interface changes.

The store rejects the file
Check the exact target slot, pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, format, and quantity. A correctly sized iPhone image does not satisfy an iPad requirement, and a missing locale variant can block submission.

Text is clipped or unreadable
Move captions and focal UI inward, increase type size and contrast, and inspect the export at thumbnail size. Recompose for the target device instead of scaling a smaller canvas.
The screenshot shows a banner or popup
Use a clean test account, dismiss the UI before capture, and disable optional overlays. For automated web captures, add a wait for the app’s main selector and configure consent, popup, and chat removal where supported.

Images are stale or incomplete
Wait for a specific selector or network idle rather than using an arbitrary short delay. Confirm that lazy-loaded images have entered the viewport and that the captured build matches the submitted version.
The story feels repetitive
Give every frame a different user question. Replace duplicate dashboards with the start, work, difference, result, and proof states in the storyboard.

- Does the first image communicate the main promise immediately?
- Does every frame show the actual current product?
- Is there one clear benefit per image?
- Are captions, controls, and focal points inside safe areas?
- Are Apple device classes, locales, and up-to-ten limits handled?
- Are Google Play’s four-image minimum and 1080-pixel requirements met?
- Do all files have the required dimensions, orientation, format, and readable text?
- Have personal data, consent banners, popups, and chat widgets been removed?
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every screenshot show a phone mockup?
No. A mockup is optional presentation; the interface and its benefit must remain clear. Use a consistent device treatment only when it improves orientation without hiding the UI.
Can I submit the same images to Apple and Google Play?
Sometimes, but do not assume it. The stores use different device targets, quantities, and dimension rules, so prepare platform-specific exports where a shared image does not meet the required slot.

Replace them whenever the represented interface, workflow, branding, or supported device target changes. A screenshot that no longer matches the shipped app can mislead users and fail a review.
