You can add a currency converter to a WordPress site with a plugin, then place it as a block, shortcode, or widget. If you run WooCommerce, choose carefully: its Currency Converter Widget changes displayed amounts but does not change the currency customers pay. For payments in other currencies, use a multi-currency extension instead.
Choose the right kind of currency converter
First decide whether visitors need an exchange-rate reference or whether your store must accept payment in the selected currency. These are different functions.
| Need | Suitable approach | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Converter on a regular WordPress page, post, sidebar, or footer | A WordPress currency-converter or exchange-rates plugin | Displays conversion information in the location where you add its block, shortcode, or widget. |
| Converted prices in a WooCommerce store, for reference | WooCommerce Currency Converter Widget | Changes displayed product, sale, cart, checkout, and shipping amounts; the store still charges its base currency. |
| Customers should pay in their selected currency | A WooCommerce multi-currency extension | Provides a currency switcher for a multi-currency purchasing experience. Confirm the extension’s payment and rate behavior before enabling it. |
Add a converter to a regular WordPress page or post
Install the Currency Converter Widget plugin
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New and search for Currency Converter Widget. Install and activate the plugin. Its WordPress.org listing also documents uploading the plugin, configuration under Settings > Currency Converter, a Gutenberg block, and shortcode placement.
- Open the page or post in the block editor, add the plugin’s currency-converter block, and configure the currencies and display options available in the block.
- Alternatively, copy the shortcode provided by the plugin’s settings and add it to a Shortcode block where the converter should appear. Preview the page and test the converter on the published site.
The WordPress.org listing describes the plugin as free and says it supports multiple widgets on a page. Check its current maintenance status, compatibility, supported currencies, and rate-source terms before relying on it.
Use the Exchange Rates Widget plugin
For an exchange-rate display, install Exchange Rates Widget from Plugins > Add New, then place it using a shortcode or a classic widget under Appearance > Widgets. The plugin listing says its embedded CurrencyRate.Today service supplies the rates and that no API key is required. Review the provider’s terms and the plugin’s current compatibility before installation.

Add the WooCommerce Currency Converter Widget
WooCommerce’s Currency Converter Widget is for showing converted amounts, not collecting payment in the displayed currency. WooCommerce states: “Customers will still pay in your base currency. Prices are for display and informational purposes only.” Read the current Currency Converter Widget documentation before configuring it.
- Install and activate the Currency Converter Widget extension using the installation method provided for your WooCommerce store.
- Go to Appearance > Widgets and add the Currency Converter widget to an available widget area.
- Configure the currency codes and symbols, choose a button or select-box display, and set whether to show a reset link. If you want location detection, configure that option and verify that your store’s location setup supports it.
- Save the widget and check product pages and the cart and checkout on the front end. WooCommerce documents that the widget can update displayed product prices, sale prices, cart and checkout totals, and shipping.
The widget uses a built-in Kestrel exchange-rate service. An optional Open Exchange Rates provider can be configured at WooCommerce > Settings > Integrations > Open Exchange Rates. WooCommerce documents a default refresh period of 12 hours, configurable from 1 to 24 hours. Check the current provider requirements and terms, including whether the optional service requires an API key for your use.

Check these details before launch
- Display versus payment: Make sure your wording and checkout experience do not imply that a converted display amount is the amount charged. A display-only converter leaves the store’s base currency charge unchanged.
- Placement: Test the converter where visitors will use it, including any cart or checkout page where the chosen extension requires a shortcode.
- Rates and currencies: Verify supported currency codes, rate source, update interval, and applicable provider terms in the current plugin or extension documentation.
- Location detection and APIs: If using geolocation or an optional rate provider, complete its setup and confirm whether an API key or other configuration is required.
- Compatibility and maintenance: Check the current plugin listing and WooCommerce documentation for maintenance, version compatibility, and setup requirements before installing.
