If the Playwright Test Explorer is empty or says “No tests have been found in this workspace yet,” first verify that VS Code has opened the project containing Playwright, its configuration file, and its test files. Then confirm the Microsoft Playwright extension is installed, Playwright Test is a project dependency, the selected configuration points at the right directory and filename pattern, and the command-line runner discovers the same tests. Those checks separate a project-discovery problem from an editor-integration problem.
What the message means
The Playwright VS Code extension discovers tests through Playwright Test installed in your project and exposes them in VS Code’s Test Explorer. An empty explorer does not identify one universal fault. A missing package, wrong workspace, selected configuration, restrictive matching rule, incompatible version, or extension connection problem can all produce similar symptoms.
The extension repository lists Playwright v1.38 or newer as a requirement. Treat that as a compatibility check, not proof that upgrading will fix every discovery failure. Use this diagnostic order
- Confirm the official extension and the project dependency.
- Open the workspace that owns the Playwright files.
- Select the intended configuration if the workspace has more than one.
- Compare
testDirandtestMatchwith the files on disk. - Run the CLI with the same project and configuration.
- Inspect Playwright output and compare versions if the explorer is still empty.
Work through the steps in order. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to tell which condition fixed—or caused—the problem.

1. Install the right extension and package
Install Microsoft’s Playwright extension
- In VS Code, open Extensions (
Ctrl+Shift+Xon Windows/Linux orCmd+Shift+Xon macOS). - Search for Playwright Test for VS Code and install the Microsoft-published extension.
- Reload VS Code if it offers a reload action.
Only the official extension provides the documented Playwright Test integration. A similarly named extension may not understand your project’s configuration.
Install Playwright Test in the project
Open the integrated terminal at the project root—the folder containing package.json—and run the package-manager command appropriate to your project:
npm install -D @playwright/test
npx playwright installFor a new project, the official guide also provides the Command Palette action Test: Install Playwright. It creates the standard project setup and browser installation flow. If your repository already has a lockfile, use its existing package manager rather than introducing a second one.
Check that @playwright/test appears in devDependencies (or the dependency section used by your project) and that a configuration file such as playwright.config.ts or playwright.config.js is present where the project expects it.

2. Open the workspace that contains the tests
VS Code resolves the extension from the opened workspace. Open the folder that contains the Playwright package, configuration, and test directory—not a parent folder that merely contains several projects, and not a subfolder that omits the package.

- Use File > Open Folder… (or Open Workspace from File… for a saved multi-root workspace).
- Select the repository root that contains
package.jsonand the Playwright config. - Open the Playwright sidebar and look for its configuration or gear control.
- If multiple
playwright.config.*files are detected, select the configuration that owns the tests you want to run.
VS Code supports multiple Playwright configurations. Selecting the wrong one can leave the explorer empty even when another configuration finds tests. The setup guide documents switching configurations: Playwright VS Code setup.
3. Check test discovery rules
Playwright does not treat every file containing a test-looking function as a test. Discovery is controlled primarily by the selected configuration’s testDir and testMatch (and, where used, testIgnore). Inspect those settings against the actual paths and names in your repository. The configuration reference lists the supported matching options: Playwright TestConfig reference.
Verify the directory
If the config contains testDir: './tests', the directory is resolved relative to that configuration file. A repository that stores tests in e2e/, specs/, or a package-specific folder will not be discovered until the directory is corrected or the files are moved.
Verify filename patterns
A restrictive testMatch can exclude valid files. For example, a pattern that accepts only *.spec.ts will not match login.test.ts. Check capitalization as well: case-sensitive filesystems can distinguish Tests from tests. Also check testIgnore for a broad pattern that excludes the entire directory.
Check the test file itself
- Import
testandexpectfrom@playwright/test, not from an unrelated package. - Ensure the file is inside the configured directory and has a matching extension.
- Look for syntax or import errors that prevent the module from loading.
- If using projects, confirm the selected configuration includes the project whose tests you expect; project definitions can filter or alter what runs. See Playwright test projects.
4. Compare VS Code with the CLI
Run the Playwright CLI from the same workspace. A listing command is a low-risk way to test discovery without executing browser actions:

npx playwright test --config=playwright.config.ts --listInterpret the result as a diagnostic branch:

This is a practical inference, not a guaranteed root-cause rule: CLI and editor integrations can differ, and a single issue report cannot establish a universal explanation.
5. Inspect versions and extension diagnostics
Check the installed versions from the project root:
npm ls @playwright/test
npx playwright --versionCompare the result with the extension repository’s stated Playwright v1.38+ requirement: Microsoft Playwright VS Code extension. If the project is older, update deliberately through your normal dependency-review process and run the project’s tests afterward; do not assume an upgrade alone is a fix.
When CLI discovery works but the explorer does not, open View > Output and choose the Playwright output channel. Read the complete error, including the config path and connection message. Also check Help > Toggle Developer Tools only if the output channel does not explain the failure. Record the extension version, VS Code version, Playwright version, selected config, and workspace path before changing settings.

A GitHub issue opened April 15, 2026 describes a configuration-connection failure in one environment where CLI execution still worked. The report lists Playwright 1.58.0, VS Code 1.114.0–1.116.0, and extension 1.1.17; those are the reporter’s environment details, not a compatibility matrix or proof that the same bug affects every installation. Read it as context, not as a universal remedy: Playwright issue #40226.

“No tests have been found in this workspace yet” immediately after opening VS Code
Confirm that the opened folder contains package.json, @playwright/test, the configuration file, and the test directory. Then use the Playwright sidebar’s gear control to select the intended config.
The explorer is empty but npx playwright test --list works
Read the Playwright output channel, verify the selected workspace and config, and compare extension, VS Code, and Playwright versions. The evidence supports investigating editor integration; it does not establish one specific setting or reinstall as a guaranteed fix.
Only one configuration’s tests appear
Select the other configuration from the sidebar gear control and verify that each config’s testDir, match, ignore, and project settings point to the expected files.
A new test file is not listed
Check its path, filename extension, case, and imports. Then rerun npx playwright test --list to see whether the CLI also omits it.

The extension reports a version or connection error
Capture the exact output, check the project’s Playwright version against the extension requirement, and reproduce from the correct workspace. Avoid deleting lockfiles or changing several dependencies before you have recorded the error.

Preventing discovery problems in new projects
- Keep the Playwright config near the package that owns it.
- Use a predictable test directory and filename convention.
- Commit the lockfile and document the package-manager command.
- Run
npx playwright test --listin CI or a pre-merge check so accidental matching changes are visible. - For multi-project repositories, document which config the VS Code sidebar should select.

Does the message mean Playwright itself is broken?
No. The message only reports that the extension currently discovered no tests. The CLI/config comparison is needed to distinguish project matching from editor integration.
Can I use more than one playwright.config file in VS Code?
Yes. Use the Playwright sidebar’s gear control to select the configuration that owns the tests you want to see.
Should I upgrade Playwright immediately?
First compare your version with the extension’s documented v1.38+ requirement and read the actual output error. An upgrade is not a confirmed universal fix.
