For an editable Word file, start with Webpage to DOCX. Its Chrome Web Store description says it converts a web page or local HTML file to DOCX, which you can open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and other word processors. It is also listed in Firefox Add-ons, so it is the most direct match when your end result must be an editable .docx file.
Choose SingleFile instead when your priority is preserving the complete rendered page for offline reference. It creates a self-contained HTML archive rather than a Word document. SaveItNow is a possible Chrome alternative that advertises both PDF export and visible-text extraction to DOCX, but check its current permissions, privacy terms, output quality, and maintenance before relying on it.
Which extension should you choose?
| Extension | Primary output | Best for | Main trade-off | Browser information |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Webpage to DOCX | Editable DOCX | Articles, reference pages, and content you need to revise in Word | The current page is sent to GrabzIt’s API for conversion; review the privacy implications for sensitive material | Listed for Chrome and Firefox |
| SingleFile | One self-contained HTML file | Faithful offline preservation, including page styling and assets | Does not directly create a Word document | Project materials list Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex, and Opera |
| SaveItNow | PDF and DOCX containing visible text | Chrome users who want a secondary DOCX/PDF option | Verify current permissions, privacy policy, output quality, and update activity first | Chrome listing |
1. Webpage to DOCX: the direct choice for editable Word output
What it does
Webpage to DOCX is designed around the exact conversion most readers mean by “save this webpage as a Word document.” From the extension, select the current webpage or a local HTML file and request a DOCX. The resulting file is intended to open in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and other word processors.
When it works well
- Turning a readable article into a draft you can edit, annotate, or combine with other documents.
- Converting a local HTML file without first publishing it to a website.
- Using either Chrome or Firefox, where listings are available.
Important privacy and permission details
The Chrome listing says the current page is sent to GrabzIt’s API for conversion. Do not treat that as local-only processing: check the page’s sensitivity and the provider’s current privacy terms before converting confidential reports, personal data, unpublished work, or pages behind access controls. The Firefox listing requests permission to download files and to read and modify browser download history. Review the permissions shown by your own browser at installation time, because store permissions and policies can change.

How to convert a page
- Install Webpage to DOCX from your browser’s extension store.
- Open the webpage you want to convert. If you have an HTML file, use the extension’s local-file option.
- Open the extension from the browser toolbar and start the DOCX conversion.
- Save the downloaded .docx file, then open it in Word or upload it to Google Docs.
- Inspect headings, lists, links, images, tables, and page breaks before editing. Web layouts do not always map perfectly to Word’s document model.
2. SingleFile: best for an accurate, self-contained archive
Why it is different
SingleFile saves a complete page—including CSS, images, fonts, and frames—as one HTML file. The project description also lists options for saving the current tab, selected content, selected frames, selected links, annotations, and multiple tabs. Its Chrome listing says saved pages can be sent to Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, or WebDAV.
Use it when preservation matters more than Word editing
A self-contained HTML file is often closer to the page you actually saw than a DOCX conversion. It keeps the page’s web assets together and can be reopened later without depending on the original site’s stylesheet or image URLs. That makes it useful for research records, compliance archives, and offline reading.
It is not a DOCX generator. If a colleague specifically needs tracked changes, Word styles, or a conventional office attachment, use Webpage to DOCX or convert the saved HTML afterward and check the result.
Browser coverage
SingleFile’s project materials list Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex, and Opera. Confirm that your browser version is supported before deploying it across a team; a project-wide browser policy can affect extension installation and storage locations.
Rank #2
Typical workflow
- Open the page and wait until images, embedded content, and lazy-loaded sections finish loading.
- Use SingleFile’s save command. Choose the current tab, selected content, or another available scope.
- Open the resulting HTML file locally to verify that images, fonts, frames, and annotations survived.
- Keep the HTML as the archival original. Create a DOCX copy only when editing or office interoperability is required.
3. SaveItNow: a Chrome secondary option
SaveItNow’s Chrome listing advertises visually accurate PDF export and extraction of visible text into a clean DOCX. Those two outputs serve different purposes: PDF favors a fixed visual record, while DOCX favors editing. Because the available description does not establish a comparative fidelity test, current maintenance record, or detailed privacy terms, treat SaveItNow as an option to evaluate rather than a default recommendation.
Checks to make before installing
- Read the permissions requested by the current Chrome listing.
- Find the extension’s current privacy policy and determine whether page content leaves your device.
- Check the last update date and whether the publisher responds to reported issues.
- Convert a representative page containing tables, images, lists, and links, then inspect both the PDF and DOCX.
How to get a better DOCX conversion
Prepare the page
- Wait for client-rendered text and lazy images to appear.
- Expand “read more” sections that you need in the document.
- Close cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, and sign-in overlays where possible.
- Decide whether you need the whole page or only the article body; selected-content conversion can reduce navigation clutter.
Inspect the Word file
Check for missing images, incorrect heading levels, broken hyperlinks, table overflow, unexpected blank pages, and text that was rendered in a canvas or image rather than as selectable HTML. Copying a web page’s visual appearance and producing a semantically clean Word document are separate goals; no extension can guarantee identical results for every site.
Protect sensitive material
Before using any cloud-backed converter, identify whether the page includes personal information, customer records, credentials, unpublished content, or material restricted by contract. If it does, choose a workflow whose processing and retention terms you have approved, or use a local archival method such as SingleFile and then perform a controlled conversion.
When a screenshot is the better deliverable
If the requirement is a visual record rather than editable text, a screenshot or PDF may be more faithful than DOCX. Screenshots preserve the rendered layout but are not editable Word content. For automated captures, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try because it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and offers an MCP server for AI agents.
Or skip the browser setup
For a repeatable capture pipeline, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every plan includes the full feature set; 1,000 screenshots per month are free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Options that matter in an automated capture workflow
ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size, margins, landscape mode and page ranges. You can supply custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, and block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types.
For authenticated or region-sensitive pages, it supports custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation. Other controls include transparent backgrounds, image resizing, selectable cache TTL, signed links for public image tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

The DOCX download is empty or incomplete
Reload the page, wait for dynamic content and lazy images, and run the conversion again. If content appears only after interaction, expand it first. A page protected by a bot check or requiring a sign-in may not expose usable HTML to an extension.
Formatting looks wrong in Word
Try converting only the article content, remove overlays, and inspect the source page for tables or canvas-rendered graphics. Keep the original HTML or PDF alongside the DOCX when visual fidelity is important.

Images or fonts are missing in an archive
Use SingleFile after all assets finish loading, then open the saved HTML locally. If a frame or embedded resource requires a separate login, it may not be available to the saved file.
A converter raises a permission or privacy concern
Read the store’s current permission prompt and privacy policy. Webpage to DOCX’s listing states that the current page is sent to GrabzIt’s API; choose a different workflow for material that cannot be uploaded.

An automated ScreenshotNeo capture fails
Check the URL, API key, wait condition, and target selector. Increase the wait strategy for client-rendered pages, block problematic third-party resources, and inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers. Failed loads and blank pages are not billed.
Bottom line
Pick Webpage to DOCX when the required deliverable is an editable Word file. Pick SingleFile when an intact, offline copy of the rendered page is more important than Word compatibility. Consider SaveItNow only after checking its current terms and testing representative pages. For automated visual captures, ScreenshotNeo provides a separate API and MCP workflow rather than a DOCX extension.
