Squarespace is often the better starting point if you want a visually guided site builder with hosting and core features managed in one service. WordPress is often the better fit if you want more control over hosting and extensions and are comfortable making more setup and maintenance decisions. The comparison depends on what you mean by WordPress: WordPress.com is a hosted service, while self-hosted WordPress software lets you choose a host. Neither platform is the right choice for everyone, and the available evidence does not establish an inherent SEO advantage for either one.

First, clarify which WordPress you mean

“WordPress” can refer to two different setups, and comparing either one with Squarespace produces a different trade-off:

  • WordPress.com is a hosted service. Its features and flexibility depend on the plan you choose.
  • Self-hosted WordPress is software you install with a hosting provider you select. You can choose from hosting, themes, plugins, and other services, but you also have more decisions to manage.

Squarespace describes its website plans as including managed cloud hosting. This bundles more of the operating setup into one service, though plan features vary. See Squarespace’s current pricing and features and WordPress.com’s comparison with Squarespace before deciding.

When Squarespace is the better fit

Squarespace is a sensible choice when you value a guided visual editing experience and would rather have hosting and common site features presented together than assemble a stack of separate services. Its official materials describe templates, site-building tools, commerce features, and managed hosting.

  • You want a portfolio, business site, blog, or store using the platform’s available tools.
  • You prefer one managed service over choosing and coordinating a host and multiple extensions.
  • You are willing to work within the design options and feature limits of the plan you select.
  • You want vendor support within the service’s stated plan terms.

Do not assume every capability is included in every plan. Squarespace explains plan differences in its guide to choosing a Squarespace plan.

When WordPress is the better fit

WordPress may suit you better if you want a wider set of hosting and extension choices and are prepared to make decisions about how the site is built and maintained. That flexibility is most apparent with self-hosted WordPress, where the host and extensions are your choices; WordPress.com has its own plan-dependent feature set.

  • You need a theme, plugin, integration, or workflow that is available in your chosen WordPress setup.
  • You want to select your own hosting provider rather than use a bundled managed service.
  • You are comfortable comparing providers, configuring extensions, and accounting for ongoing maintenance.
  • You need to control more of the technical implementation than a guided builder allows.

Greater choice does not automatically mean lower cost or less work. For self-hosted WordPress, the total depends on the host and any paid themes, plugins, professional help, or other services you use. For WordPress.com, check the current plan’s included features.

How to compare costs without relying on stale prices

There is no single meaningful cost comparison until you define the site, billing period, and WordPress product. Plan options, prices, and included features can change, so use the live Squarespace pricing page and current WordPress.com plan details rather than an old starting-price table.

For a fair comparison, total the costs for the same period and scope:

  • Website plan or hosting
  • Domain and email, if needed
  • Paid themes, plugins, or other extensions
  • Payment processing or transaction fees that apply to your intended sales workflow
  • Maintenance or professional assistance you expect to need

Squarespace’s plan guide notes that available plans and features can vary; review the current plan information alongside the pricing page. For self-hosted WordPress, include the actual host and paid add-ons you intend to use, rather than treating the software alone as the total cost.

SEO: compare controls, not platform reputations

The available official comparison pages describe SEO tools and controls, but do not show that Squarespace or WordPress inherently ranks higher. A platform choice is not a ranking guarantee. Compare the practical controls you need—such as page metadata, URL structure, integrations, and technical flexibility—against your publishing workflow. On WordPress, those controls can depend on whether you use WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress and, in the latter case, your configuration.

Moving a WordPress site to Squarespace

Squarespace documents import and export support for some content, including a migration path from WordPress. That does not mean a migration will reproduce the original site exactly: design, plugins, forms, custom code, and integrations may need to be reviewed or rebuilt. Squarespace’s guides explain the supported process and limitations: importing to and exporting from a site and moving from WordPress to Squarespace.

  1. Inventory the existing site. Record important page and post URLs, media, metadata, forms, custom code, and integrations.
  2. Check current import support. Confirm which content your specific WordPress setup can export and Squarespace can import; do not assume every element is supported.
  3. Rebuild what does not transfer. Review the design and site-specific features, then recreate or replace anything the import leaves out.
  4. Test before switching visitors over. Check high-value pages, media, forms, integrations, and redirects, and verify that important URLs still lead to the intended content.

Choose based on the work you want to own

Decide by listing the site’s essential tasks—publishing, selling, design control, integrations, and support—then verify that the specific plan or WordPress setup can handle them. Choose Squarespace if a bundled, visually guided service meets those needs; choose WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress when its particular feature set or additional control is worth the decisions and responsibility involved. There is no universal winner independent of the site and its owner.
