Use a naming policy, normalize every upload, and treat existing-media renames as a migration. A practical policy is lowercase ASCII where possible, single hyphens between words, no punctuation or tracking fragments, and a descriptive subject—for example, blue-widget-front-view.jpg. WordPress already performs substantial filename sanitization; use its upload filters or a maintained plugin to add stricter rules. A clean filename does not replace meaningful alt text, captions, or attachment titles.
Define the filename policy before enforcing it
Write down the rule and a few examples before changing WordPress. A useful baseline is:
- Use lowercase letters and numbers where practical.
- Separate words with one hyphen.
- Remove accents, punctuation, tracking fragments, and unnecessary symbols.
- Keep the subject and distinguishing detail, such as product, angle, color, or location.
- Retain the correct extension, such as
.jpg,.png, or.webp.
blue-widget-front-view.jpg is descriptive. IMG_4837.JPG is merely clean-looking and still gives users, editors, and search systems little context. Decide whether the same policy applies to PDFs, videos, and other uploads, or only to images.
What WordPress cleans automatically
During upload, WordPress runs sanitize_file_name(). It removes accents and special characters, converts whitespace and consecutive dashes to a single dash, trims periods, dashes, and underscores from the beginning and end, and then applies the sanitize_file_name_chars and sanitize_file_name filters. The official developer reference describes it as sanitizing a filename by replacing whitespace with dashes.

This gives you a safe baseline, but it does not necessarily impose every site rule. For example, a site that requires lowercase names or a particular normalization pattern should add that logic through the sanitize_file_name filter. Use sanitize_file_name_chars only when you need to change which characters are considered invalid.
Keep custom logic scoped to uploads
Filename filters can run in contexts other than the single upload you are looking at. Restrict custom mutation to upload processing rather than globally rewriting values used by unrelated code. A September 2026 changelog entry for Rename Media Files records a fix that limited sanitization to an upload in progress, illustrating the risk of unscoped changes.
Expect collision suffixes
WordPress also calls wp_unique_filename() while handling uploads. If a cleaned name already exists, WordPress can append a uniqueness suffix. Enforce the format, but do not promise that every final filename will exactly match the original proposed slug.

Compare tools on upload-only versus existing-file support, image-only versus all-file scope, rule flexibility, reference and thumbnail updates, sideload coverage, collision handling, maintenance history, security status, and whether changes can be staged and reversed.

A developer can attach a normalization callback to sanitize_file_name. The callback should receive the already-sanitized filename, enforce only the policy you actually want, and leave the extension intact. Lowercasing is a common addition; more aggressive transformations should be tested against multilingual names, duplicate uploads, and filenames containing multiple periods.
Keep the callback limited to upload handling and test it with the Media Library, the block editor, REST or programmatic uploads, and any sideload process your site uses. Activate it first on staging, inspect the resulting attachment URLs, and then deploy with a rollback plan.

Do not hide collision behavior
Two source files can normalize to the same result—for example, Blue Widget.jpg and blue_widget.jpg. WordPress may resolve that collision by adding a suffix. Store or display the final generated name when an exact URL matters.
What happens to images already in the Media Library
An upload cleaner does not repair files already stored in uploads. Renaming existing media can change the attachment URL, generated derivative URLs, cached paths, and references embedded in post content or other metadata.
Use a reversible migration
- Create a complete backup and a staging copy of the site.
- Inventory attachments, original files, generated image sizes, featured-image assignments, post-content references, custom fields, feeds, and external integrations.
- Choose a renaming tool that explicitly updates references and derivatives, or write a migration that does both.
- Run a small batch on staging and verify originals, thumbnails, responsive images, CSS references, REST responses, sitemaps, and cached pages.
- Record old-to-new URLs and configure redirects where old public URLs may still be requested.
- Purge relevant page, object, CDN, and image caches only after references are verified.
- Repeat in controlled batches, monitoring server logs and broken-link reports, with a restore point for each batch.
The cited media-renaming tools advertise reference and thumbnail updates; the basic upload cleaner does not. Treat those capabilities as release-specific and verify them on your own staging copy.

A readable filename can improve organization and provide useful context, but it is not alt text. Write concise, accurate alt text for informative images, use an empty alt attribute for purely decorative images, and manage captions and attachment titles separately.
Do not promise a rankings increase from filename cleanup alone. The available plugin and WordPress materials describe SEO-friendly organization but provide no independent statistic isolating filename impact or a controlled ranking study. The defensible benefit is consistency, easier media management, and cleaner URLs—not a guaranteed search-position change.
