You can build a BuzzFeed-style publication in WordPress by combining a suitable theme, editorial taxonomies, reusable templates, and block-based post listings. The goal is a visual, section-led publishing structure—not a copy of BuzzFeed’s brand, content, or business model. A practical build uses a block theme and the Site Editor, but a classic PHP theme remains a valid choice when you already have a custom development workflow.

1. Choose how you will edit the site

Your first decision is the theme editing model. It determines how you create the homepage, navigation, headers, footers, archives, and article layouts.

Block theme and Site Editor

Activate a block theme if you want to edit most site areas visually. WordPress says the Site Editor is available after a block theme is activated, and describes it as a way to design the entire site with blocks, including the header and footer. See the Block themes documentation and Site Editor documentation.

With this model, open Appearance → Editor to work with styles, navigation, templates, and template parts. You can change global typography, colors, spacing, and recurring pieces without editing PHP files.

Classic theme and PHP templates

A classic theme uses the traditional Customizer and PHP template files. It can be the better fit when you have an existing magazine theme, a developer-maintained design system, or custom code that your team already understands. Do not select a block theme merely because it is newer; select the workflow your editors and developers can maintain.

2. Plan the publication before designing the homepage

Decide what the site covers and how readers will move between topics. Keep the first taxonomy small enough for editors to use consistently.

  • Define a limited set of sections, such as News, Culture, Technology, Lifestyle, or another grouping appropriate to your publication.
  • Use categories for broad editorial sections and tags only for useful cross-topic descriptors.
  • Choose navigation labels that match the names readers see on section pages.
  • Decide which stories belong on the front page, which are evergreen, and which should appear only in an archive.

These are editorial decisions, not categories prescribed by WordPress or by BuzzFeed. Configure them under Posts → Categories and Posts → Tags, then apply them consistently when publishing.

3. Build the homepage as a magazine-style template

A BuzzFeed-style front page is usually a sequence of visual story groups rather than one chronological list. WordPress’s theme guidance uses a news-magazine layout with multiple post queries and sections as an example; its block-editor concepts and template documentation explain the underlying model.

Create a clear section hierarchy

Arrange the front page in a deliberate order: a lead area, several topic sections, and optional secondary modules. Give each section a heading and a link to its full archive so the page remains understandable when a reader skips a module.

Use Query Loop blocks for story listings

Add a Query Loop block for each group of posts. Configure each query to filter by a category or other taxonomy, then choose the number of posts and the visual arrangement. Inside the loop, arrange the featured image, post title, excerpt, author, and date as needed. Vary the presentation—such as a large lead card followed by smaller cards—without changing the underlying post content.

Set the homepage in WordPress

  1. Open Settings → Reading.
  2. Choose a static page for the homepage if you want a dedicated front-page template, then select the page you created.
  3. Open Appearance → Editor → Templates and edit the home or front-page template supplied by the theme.
  4. Insert and configure Query Loop blocks for each planned section.
  5. Preview the page at the screen sizes your audience uses before publishing the template.

4. Create templates for every important page type

Do not design only the front page. A publication feels coherent when the same visual rules continue through archives and individual stories.

Homepage and section archives

Use a homepage template for the multi-section layout and an archive template for category pages. An archive should identify the section, provide a consistent card layout, and offer pagination or another way to reach older posts.

Single-article template

Build a single-post template with a predictable reading path: headline, metadata, featured image where appropriate, article content, and related or next-story navigation. Keep promotional or secondary elements from pushing the article body below an unreasonable amount of clutter.

Search and error pages

Also review search results, the 404 page, and any author or date archives your publication exposes. These templates are part of the reader experience even though they are not visible on the homepage.

Template parts and navigation

Save recurring headers, footers, and other shared regions as template parts in a block theme. Use the Navigation block to create and edit menus; WordPress documents both this block and the Site Editor workflow in its Site Editor guide.

5. Establish the visual system globally

Set shared design rules before fine-tuning individual cards. In Appearance → Editor → Styles, define the typefaces, text sizes, colors, link treatment, spacing, and default block appearance that should apply across the publication.

  • Typography: Use a clear hierarchy so headlines, dek text, captions, and body copy are distinguishable.
  • Color: Reserve strong accent colors for recognizable actions or section identities, and verify readable contrast.
  • Spacing: Keep consistent gaps between cards, headings, images, and paragraphs so a busy homepage still scans cleanly.
  • Images: Establish preferred aspect ratios and editorial guidance for featured images to avoid uneven card heights.

Check the layouts on likely phone, tablet, and desktop widths before launch. The documentation establishes the editing capabilities, but no independent responsive or speed test is implied here; evaluate those qualities on the actual theme and content you select.

6. Compose articles with native blocks

Use the block editor for the story itself. WordPress’s Work with blocks documentation covers common blocks for headings, paragraphs, images, lists, video, and galleries.

A practical article structure

  1. Add one descriptive headline and a concise introduction.
  2. Break long pieces into meaningful headings and short paragraphs.
  3. Use images, galleries, or video where they add information rather than decoration.
  4. Use lists for scannable steps or grouped facts.
  5. Add captions and alternative text when images require context or accessibility support.

When to add a plugin

Install an extension only for a defined requirement that native blocks do not meet—for example, a specialized interactive format, editorial workflow, or integration. Review its update history, documentation, accessibility behavior, and effect on your templates before adopting it. A plugin is not required simply to obtain a magazine-style homepage.

7. Compare themes using publication needs

Rather than choosing a theme because it advertises a “BuzzFeed layout,” compare it against the work your team must perform.

Evaluation area Questions to answer
Editing workflow Does the team prefer the Site Editor and blocks, or a Customizer/PHP workflow?
Template coverage Are homepage, section archive, single article, search, author, and error templates available or practical to create?
Editorial layout Can you create multiple post listings, filter them by section, and control their card presentation?
Content handling Does the theme accommodate the intended image, video, gallery, and long-form article patterns?
Operational quality Have you checked accessibility, responsive behavior, loading performance, update history, documentation, support, and how easily content can migrate away?

These are selection criteria, not test results for a particular commercial theme. The available documentation does not establish a specific theme, hosting provider, budget, traffic level, or performance outcome.

8. Use a pre-launch publishing checklist

Before inviting readers, run through the complete editorial path.

  • Confirm the site title, logo, menu labels, and section links.
  • Open each section archive and verify that its Query Loop shows the intended posts.
  • Read several articles using the single-post template, including stories with images, lists, video, and galleries.
  • Check featured-image crops, captions, alternative text, headings, and link labels.
  • Test search, pagination, the 404 page, and any author or date archives you expose.
  • Review the homepage at the screen widths your audience uses and look for overflowing text, awkward card heights, or inaccessible controls.
  • Confirm that editors know which categories, tags, templates, and reusable patterns to use for a new story.

Once these checks pass, document the publishing rules so a growing editorial team can reproduce the same structure without redesigning every post.
