Yes. Power Automate for desktop has built-in actions for screenshots of webpages, webpage elements, desktop application elements, the foreground window, or a display. Choose the action that matches what you need to capture, then save the image to a file or the clipboard. A cloud flow does not capture a live desktop on its own; it can run a desktop flow when the required machine, connection, account, and licensing are configured.

Which Power Automate screenshot action should you use?

Power Automate for desktop separates browser automation from desktop UI automation and workstation capture. The target you choose matters: a webpage element is not the same kind of automation target as a button in a desktop application.

What you need to capture Action and group Output choices
A webpage or one element on it Take screenshot of web page — browser automation Clipboard or file; documented formats: BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, WMF
A control in a desktop application Take screenshot of UI element — UI automation Clipboard or file; select an image format
A display or the foreground window Take screenshot — Workstation Clipboard or file; capture all screens, the primary screen, a selected screen, or the foreground window

Microsoft documents the webpage action as taking a screenshot of the page or an element currently displayed in the browser and saving it to a file or the clipboard (Microsoft Learn: browser automation actions). The available formats are listed by the action reference; it does not rank one format as universally best.

How to capture a webpage or web element

  1. Set up a browser instance. Create a new browser instance or attach to one using the browser automation actions. Browser automation uses web UI elements, not desktop UI elements. Microsoft documents browser automation prerequisites and limitations in its web automation guidance.
  2. Identify the target. Add Take screenshot of web page. Choose Entire web page for a full-page capture or Specific element to capture a web UI element. For the latter, use a web selector associated with the browser page.
  3. Choose the destination. Select file output and provide a full file path if you need an image you can use later. Otherwise, choose clipboard output. For file output, set a supported format: BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, or WMF.
  4. Run and verify. Confirm that the intended page or element was captured and that the image was written to the selected destination. A missing selector, unwritable file path, unavailable clipboard, or capture failure can prevent the action from succeeding.

Browser automation cannot open or attach to a browser that was opened under a different system user, according to Microsoft’s web automation guidance. If you are automating an existing browser, ensure it belongs to the same system user as the flow.

How to capture a desktop application element

Use Take screenshot of UI element in the UI automation group when the target is a control in a desktop application, such as a dialog or application window element. This is distinct from browser automation: select a desktop UI element rather than a web UI element.

  1. Use the desktop UI automation tools to identify or select the required element.
  2. Add Take screenshot of UI element and set the target to that desktop element.
  3. Choose file or clipboard output. If saving to a file, provide the destination and select an image format.
  4. Run the flow and check the result. The action reference documents possible failures when retrieving the element, saving the image, or taking the screenshot.

See Microsoft’s UI automation action reference for the action’s documented settings and failure cases.

  2. Choose the screen or foreground-window capture option that matches the intended target.
  3. Set file or clipboard output. For a file, choose the path and an available format.
  4. Run the flow and check the image at the destination you selected.

The Workstation action reference describes the action as capturing the foreground window or specified screen and saving the image in a file or to the clipboard.

Can a cloud flow take a screenshot?

The screenshot actions described above are Power Automate for desktop actions. A standard cloud flow does not itself capture a user’s live desktop. A cloud flow can invoke a desktop flow using the cloud action Run a flow built with Power Automate for desktop, provided the desktop-flow environment is configured.

Microsoft’s desktop-flow triggering guidance lists requirements that include a registered machine, a work or school account, a desktop-flow connection, and the applicable attended license or unattended add-on. Confirm the requirements for your setup before building a cloud-triggered capture process.

Save screenshots to a file or clipboard?

All three documented capture paths offer file or clipboard output. Use a file when the image must persist after the flow ends, be attached to a report, or be consumed by another step that reads a path. Use the clipboard when the next action or a person will paste the image. The action references do not establish a universally preferred format, so select one supported by the tool that will consume the image.

  • File: Supply a complete destination path and ensure the flow’s run context can write there.
  • Clipboard: Choose this when the image is intended for immediate paste; a clipboard issue can prevent the capture action from completing.
  • Format: For webpages, the documented choices are BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF. Check the selected action’s reference for the formats it supports.

Capture screenshots around a failing automation step

For unattended troubleshooting, Microsoft recommends placing screenshot actions immediately before and after the step that fails. Comparing the images can show whether the flow reached the expected page or window and whether a blocking prompt appeared. This is a diagnostic technique, not a guarantee that every failure will be visible in a screenshot.

Microsoft documents one specific case in which a security policy affecting a UAC prompt can prevent screen access during an unattended workstation screenshot. Treat that as a possible cause when the circumstances fit, not as a universal explanation for screenshot failures. See the desktop-flow troubleshooting guidance.

Common screenshot problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Specific webpage element cannot be captured The web selector may not identify an element currently available on the page. Confirm the browser instance and target web UI element; distinguish web selectors from desktop UI selectors.
Desktop element capture fails The action may be unable to retrieve its selected UI element. Recheck the desktop UI element and use the UI automation action for desktop controls.
Screenshot is not saved The path, file destination, or run context may prevent writing. Use a complete path that the flow can access, then verify the destination.
Clipboard capture fails The clipboard could not be written. Try a file destination if a persistent image is suitable and investigate the clipboard context.
Browser cannot be attached The browser may have been opened under a different system user. Run the browser and flow under the same system user, following Microsoft’s web automation guidance.
Unattended screen capture fails near a prompt A blocking prompt or, in a documented case, security policy affecting UAC may prevent access. Capture immediately before and after the failing step, check for a prompt, and review the unattended troubleshooting guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a website from code rather than automate a local browser, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets, before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use the MCP server’s take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Can I capture each step of a flow?

You can add screenshot actions at points in a desktop flow, including immediately before and after a step you are troubleshooting. The documented sources establish the capture actions, but do not describe an automatic setting that appends every step’s screenshot to a Word document.

Does a webpage screenshot action capture the whole page?

Yes. The browser action offers an Entire web page option as well as Specific element.
