Use a 16:9 canvas for a standard YouTube video and a 9:16 canvas for a Short. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard-video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 pixels for Shorts. Export as JPG or PNG, then upload the file in YouTube Studio. The instructions and limits below reflect YouTube Help guidance accessed in September 2026.
Recommended YouTube thumbnail sizes
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independent benchmark results. The minimum dimension is a floor, not the preferred working size.

For the full, current specification, see YouTube Help’s custom-thumbnail instructions. A 16:9 file is the right choice for a normal horizontal video; it is not the right master file for a Short.

Choose the right canvas before designing
Standard videos: 16:9 landscape
Create a document that is 3840 pixels wide and 2160 pixels high. This 16:9 ratio matches the way a conventional video is displayed on watch pages, search results and most connected-TV interfaces. You may work at a smaller size if your editor or workflow requires it, but the image should still be at least 640 pixels wide and remain 16:9.

Shorts: 9:16 portrait
Create a 2160-by-3840-pixel document for a Short. Keep important text and faces away from the extreme top, bottom and side edges because YouTube’s interface can overlay controls and labels. The file must be at least 640 pixels high. Custom Shorts thumbnails are currently added through YouTube Studio on a computer, according to YouTube Help.
Podcast playlists: square artwork
If you are preparing artwork for a podcast playlist rather than a video or Short, use a 1:1 square composition. Do not substitute the 16:9 video specification for podcast artwork.
How to set the dimensions in an image editor
- Create a new document. Set the width and height to 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, or 2160 × 3840 for a Short. Confirm that the editor is using pixels, not inches or centimetres.
- Lock the aspect ratio. A 16:9 lock prevents accidental stretching on a standard video; a 9:16 lock does the same for a Short.
- Compose for a small preview. Use a short title, one obvious subject and strong contrast. Check the design at a reduced size before exporting; details that look clear at full resolution can disappear in YouTube’s smaller cards.
- Export an accepted format. Save as JPG or PNG. JPG is usually smaller for photographic artwork; PNG is useful for sharp type, flat colour or transparency in the source file.
- Check the file size. The upload limit depends on the device and content type, so verify the exported file against the cap shown in YouTube’s current guidance before uploading.
Do not enlarge a low-resolution image merely to reach the recommended pixel count. Start with a sharp source, or rebuild the text and graphics on the correctly sized canvas.

- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Content in the left-hand menu.
- Choose the video whose thumbnail you want to add or change.
- In the video’s thumbnail controls, select Upload file under Thumbnail.
- Pick the JPG or PNG file, wait for the preview to finish processing, and select Save.
Allow time for the new image to appear everywhere. Cached search, channel and embedded views can update at different times even after Studio reports that the save succeeded. YouTube documents this workflow at its custom-thumbnail help page.
Upload a custom thumbnail for a Short
YouTube’s current Help instructions say custom Shorts thumbnails can be added only in YouTube Studio on a computer. Use this path:
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and select Content.
- Switch to the Shorts section and open the Short.
- Open the Short’s thumbnail controls and choose the option to upload a file.
- Select your 9:16 image and save the change.
If you are working only in the mobile YouTube app and cannot find an upload control for a Short, move to Studio on a computer rather than repeatedly editing the file.
Understand YouTube’s file-size limits
YouTube lists different caps for mobile and desktop uploads:

These are platform limits, not recommendations for a target file size. If a file is rejected, export a smaller JPG, reduce unnecessary metadata, or use a simpler PNG. Do not change the canvas ratio merely to reduce bytes.
Important caveat for vertical videos
YouTube says a vertical video that uses a 16:9 custom thumbnail can receive an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. For a Short, make a separate 9:16 design so the artwork is appropriate for the vertical surfaces where viewers discover it. This behavior is described in YouTube’s thumbnail guidance.
Policy, verification and upload limits
Community Guidelines apply to thumbnails
Custom thumbnails must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube can reject a thumbnail and issue a strike for a violation; repeated violations can affect thumbnail privileges or the channel. Avoid misleading imagery, prohibited sexual or violent material, harassment and other content covered by the guidelines.
Daily limits can vary
A channel can encounter a daily custom-thumbnail upload limit. YouTube says the limit can vary by country or region and by channel history. If you have made many changes in a short period, wait for the limit to reset instead of creating duplicate uploads.

Troubleshooting thumbnail size problems
The image looks stretched or cropped
Check the canvas ratio first. A standard video should be 16:9; a Short should be 9:16. Re-crop the source on a correctly proportioned canvas rather than forcing a nonmatching image to fit.
YouTube rejects the file for size
Confirm whether you are uploading from mobile or desktop, then export within that device’s applicable cap. Lower JPG quality modestly or remove oversized embedded metadata. Keep the pixel dimensions and ratio unchanged.
The custom-thumbnail option is missing
Verify the channel, complete account verification, and open the video in YouTube Studio rather than the public watch page. For Shorts, use Studio on a computer because the current Help instructions limit custom Shorts-thumbnail uploads to that environment.

Reopen the video in Studio to confirm that the change was saved, then allow time for caches and different YouTube surfaces to refresh. Check an incognito window or another device before uploading the same file again.
A vertical video’s thumbnail changes on Home
This can be expected behavior when a vertical video has a 16:9 custom image. YouTube may generate a 4:5 version for Home, Explore and Subscriptions. Use a purpose-built 9:16 thumbnail for Shorts and other vertical content.
The upload is blocked after many changes
You may have reached the channel’s daily custom-thumbnail limit. Because YouTube says this limit varies by region and channel history, there is no universal reset number to apply. Wait and try later, while keeping the final approved image ready.

Final pre-upload checklist
- Choose 16:9 for a standard video or 9:16 for a Short.
- Use the recommended pixel canvas for the content type.
- Keep text legible at a small preview size.
- Export as JPG or PNG and check the device-specific file cap.
- Use YouTube Studio, with a verified account, to upload and save the file.
- For vertical content, inspect the surfaces where YouTube may generate a different crop.
- Keep the design within YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one thumbnail for both a regular video and a Short?
You can upload the same artwork only if it remains readable in both orientations, but a single 16:9 image is not an appropriate substitute for a purpose-built 9:16 Short thumbnail.
Does changing the thumbnail change the video’s resolution?
No. The thumbnail is a separate preview image; changing its canvas or file format does not alter the uploaded video’s underlying resolution.
Why does my thumbnail look different in search than on the watch page?
YouTube displays thumbnails in multiple cards and may crop or resize them for each surface. Check the saved image in Studio and compare the relevant desktop and mobile placements.
