This keeps the conversion on your device when using the documented Edge workflow. An online converter can be useful when your browser cannot open the archive, but its processing, retention, limits and output quality are service-specific. Always inspect the finished PDF for missing images, page breaks, margins and selectable text.
What MHTML and MHT files contain
MHTML (usually saved with the .mhtml or .mht extension) is a web-archive format. Chrome’s pageCapture documentation describes it as encapsulating a page and resources such as CSS and images in one file. The archive can only preserve resources that were present when it was saved; a missing image or stylesheet cannot be recreated during conversion.
MHTML support is not identical on every operating system or browser. Microsoft’s policy pages describe specific Windows and Edge behavior for local and downloaded MHT/MHTML files, including Internet Explorer mode and policy settings; these are not a universal consumer guarantee (downloaded-file policy, local-file policy).
Method 1: Save an MHTML file as PDF in Microsoft Edge
This is the best first method when Edge can render the archive.

- Locate the
.mhtmlor.mhtfile in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS). - Right-click it, choose Open with, and select Microsoft Edge. If it does not open, try Edge’s Internet Explorer mode only where your organization’s Windows policies allow it.
- Wait until the archived page finishes rendering. Scroll through it once if images are lazy-loaded or appear only after interaction.
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on Mac, as documented by Microsoft Support.
- For the destination, choose Save as PDF. If that option is absent, choose the operating system’s PDF printer.
- Set paper size, orientation, margins and scale. Turn on Background graphics when colors or background images are part of the page; Edge exposes this setting in its print options.
- Use the preview to check every page, then select Save and choose a filename and folder.
Microsoft says that, in its documented Edge print path, “When you print to a printer, application, or PDF, Microsoft Edge sends the commands and file information to the operating system of your device,” rather than back to Microsoft (User data and privacy in Microsoft Edge). That statement applies to this Edge workflow, not to third-party online converters.
Method 2: Convert MHTML to PDF with Firefox
Firefox can print a rendered archive when the file opens correctly on your system.

- Open the MHT/MHTML file in Firefox. If Firefox refuses to render it, use Edge or an online service instead; do not rename the extension and expect that to fix the format.
- Press Ctrl+P (Windows/Linux) or Command+P (Mac).
- In the destination dropdown, select Save to PDF, following Mozilla’s documented workflow (Mozilla Support, updated 2024-08-22).
- Choose paper, orientation, margins and scale, preview the result, and save.
Firefox and Edge may paginate the same archive differently. The browser print preview—not the on-screen page alone—is the reliable place to judge clipping and page breaks.
Method 3: Use an online MHTML-to-PDF converter
An online converter is an option when the archive will not open locally or you need a web interface. Do not treat “online” as a guarantee that a file is uploaded, deleted promptly or processed privately. Read the named service’s current privacy, retention, size and supported-format terms before selecting a file.

Typical online workflow
- Open the converter’s official page and verify that it explicitly accepts MHT or MHTML.
- Check whether processing is local in the browser or involves an upload. A vendor’s local-processing statement is a claim about that service, not a property of online converters generally.
- Select the archive, wait for the preview or conversion, and download the PDF.
- Open the downloaded PDF in a viewer and inspect images, fonts, links, page breaks and text selection. Delete the uploaded or downloaded copy according to your organization’s policy.
For example, Fileverter describes two different outputs on its MHTML converter page: a Download PDF option that it says is image-based, and a Save as PDF option that opens browser printing and may preserve selectable text. Treat those as vendor-stated characteristics and verify the actual file. Its guidance also notes that results depend on the archive containing the required images and styles.

Fixes for common conversion problems
The file will not open
- Try Edge, then Firefox, on the same device. Confirm the extension is really
.mhtor.mhtml, not a renamed HTML file. - On managed Windows PCs, ask an administrator whether Edge Internet Explorer mode or local-MHTML policies block the file. The policies documented by Microsoft apply only to specified configurations.
- If every browser fails, the archive may be incomplete or damaged. Use an online converter only after checking its data-handling terms.
Images or styling are missing
- The resources may not have been included when the archive was saved.
- In Edge print settings, enable Background graphics and preview again.
- Compare another browser’s print preview; rendering engines can interpret archived CSS differently.
Text is tiny, clipped or split awkwardly
- Set the correct paper size, switch between portrait and landscape, and adjust scale or margins.
- For very wide content, use landscape or a larger paper size rather than forcing extreme scaling.
- Check each page in preview. A visually correct browser tab can still produce bad pagination.
The PDF contains pictures of text
That is expected from an image-based converter output. Choose the service’s browser-print or Save as PDF route when available, or print locally and test selection by dragging across a sentence and copying it.

The PDF is blank or incomplete
- Wait for the archive to finish rendering before printing; some pages reveal content after scrolling.
- Reload the archive and try a different browser.
- If an online service reports a successful conversion but produces a blank file, download again and compare with the local print result.
Quality and privacy checklist
- Keep the original MHTML file unchanged so you can retry with another renderer.
- For confidential archives, prefer a local browser print path unless your organization has approved the online service.
- Confirm that the PDF has the expected number of pages and that headings, tables, images and hyperlinks appear.
- Test text selection and search if the PDF will be quoted, indexed or made accessible.
- Look for personal data, session details or hidden content before sharing the PDF.
- Record the browser, operating system and print settings when repeatability matters.

Can I convert an MHTML file without installing software?
Yes, if a browser already installed on your device opens it, use that browser’s print-to-PDF command. Otherwise, an online converter may accept the file, subject to its limits and data policies.

Will converting MHTML to PDF preserve the original webpage exactly?
No method guarantees pixel-perfect reproduction. The archive’s saved resources, browser renderer, print CSS, fonts and pagination settings all affect the result.
Is MHT different from MHTML?
They are commonly used filename extensions for the same web-archive family. Compatibility depends more on the browser and platform than on which of those two extensions appears.
Can I batch-convert many archives?
The documented browser workflows are manual, one file at a time. Batch capability, file limits and offline processing must be verified in a specific converter’s current documentation.
