For most people, WireGuard is a sensible first choice when their VPN app supports it and their network allows UDP: it has a lean design and is built around a fixed modern cryptographic suite. Choose OpenVPN when you need its TCP transport, existing configuration compatibility, or broader configuration options. Neither protocol is universally faster or more secure in every setup; your provider, device, network, server, and configuration all affect the result.
WireGuard vs. OpenVPN at a glance
| Feature | WireGuard | OpenVPN |
|---|---|---|
| Design | Compact VPN tunnel with a fixed protocol design and public-key peer configuration. WireGuard protocol documentation | Configurable VPN using TLS mode to negotiate a protected data channel. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual |
| Transport | UDP only; it does not natively tunnel over TCP. WireGuard Known Limitations | Can be configured to use either UDP or TCP. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual |
| Cryptography and negotiation | Specifies a narrow suite including ChaCha20-Poly1305, Curve25519, BLAKE2s, SipHash24, and HKDF. WireGuard protocol documentation | Negotiable data-channel choices depend on the peers, crypto library, platform, and configuration. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual |
| Performance | Designed for high performance, but real-world speed depends on the implementation and route. | Performance depends on configuration and implementation; Data Channel Offload can affect results on supported setups. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual |
| Post-quantum protection | Not post-quantum secure by default. An optional pre-shared key is not, by itself, the recommended post-quantum handshake described by the project. WireGuard Known Limitations | No universal post-quantum property is established here; assess the actual protocol version and deployment. |
Which is faster, WireGuard or OpenVPN?
There is no universal speed winner for every VPN service, device, server, and network. WireGuard’s project documentation says its design aims for higher performance than OpenVPN, but that design goal is not a guarantee about the speed you will get. An independent RTINGS comparison, updated March 31, 2026, describes a controlled side-by-side test using four identical, brand-new laptops; its findings apply to that test setup rather than every provider, route, operating system, or device. RTINGS’ WireGuard vs. OpenVPN comparison
OpenVPN performance also depends on how it is configured. The OpenVPN 2.6 manual documents Data Channel Offload (DCO), which can use a platform kernel driver when supported and configured. The manual specifies that DCO currently requires AEAD data ciphers and Linux with the ovpn-dco module; support and behavior vary by platform and version. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual
To compare fairly, use the same VPN service and a nearby server, then test both protocols on the same device and network. Compare download and upload speed, latency, stability, and how well the connection handles the tasks you care about. A change in server load or route can matter as much as the protocol.

What is the practical difference in how they work?
WireGuard uses a lean peer-and-key model
WireGuard identifies peers by public keys and uses AllowedIPs to associate keys with tunnel IP addresses for routing and access-control behavior. The protocol specifies a fixed set of cryptographic primitives and the Noise_IK handshake rather than offering a broad collection of negotiated protocol modes. Its documentation says handshakes recur to rotate keys and provide perfect forward secrecy. WireGuard protocol documentation
That small design can make the protocol easier to reason about, but it does not mean every part of setup is automatic. Key distribution, account management, and provider-specific settings are handled by the VPN app or service, not by WireGuard itself.

OpenVPN exposes more deployment choices
In OpenVPN 2.6 TLS mode, a TLS control channel exchanges cipher and HMAC keys for a protected data channel. The manual documents data-cipher negotiation and defaults, but which choices actually work depends on the peers, crypto library, platform, and configuration. OpenVPN 2.6 Manual
That flexibility helps when a deployment needs particular transport or compatibility settings. It also leaves administrators more choices to configure and maintain. Configurability alone does not make a setup more secure; implementation, selected settings, updates, and operational practices matter.

What if the network blocks UDP?
This is one of the clearest reasons to consider OpenVPN. WireGuard sends all packets over UDP and does not natively tunnel over TCP. The WireGuard project explicitly says it does not support TCP tunneling because of the performance problems associated with TCP-over-TCP. WireGuard protocol documentation WireGuard Known Limitations
OpenVPN can be configured for TCP or UDP. If UDP is unavailable or disrupted on a network, OpenVPN over TCP may connect where a direct WireGuard tunnel cannot. TCP is not automatically faster or more reliable for every workload, however. A separate encapsulation or obfuscation layer may also be used with WireGuard in some deployments, but that adds software and configuration rather than providing native TCP support.

Is WireGuard more secure than OpenVPN?
Neither protocol is a blanket security winner. WireGuard’s fixed cryptographic suite and documented handshake properties provide a relatively narrow design to evaluate. OpenVPN’s TLS mode has negotiable settings, so its security depends in part on the version and the configuration actually used. In both cases, use maintained software and a sound deployment rather than assuming the protocol name alone guarantees safety.
WireGuard is not post-quantum secure by default. Its documentation describes an optional pre-shared key mixed with public-key cryptography, but recommends layering a genuinely post-quantum handshake above WireGuard for that security goal. It also notes a specific limitation: compromise of a responder’s private key combined with logged prior handshakes could reveal who sent those handshakes, though not the contents of the encrypted data packets. - Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Using either protocol does not by itself make you anonymous or stop all tracking. A VPN protocol defines how a tunnel works; the VPN service separately determines its apps, servers, logging practices, account terms, and implementation.
Which protocol should you use?
- Start with WireGuard if your VPN app offers it, you want a simple performance-oriented default, and UDP works on your network.
- Try OpenVPN over UDP if you need OpenVPN compatibility but have no reason to use TCP; compare it with WireGuard on your actual device and route.
- Use OpenVPN over TCP when the network blocks or interferes with UDP, or when a deployment specifically requires TCP transport.
- Favor OpenVPN’s configuration options if an existing setup depends on its TLS-based controls, negotiation, or compatibility. Confirm that both ends support the selected settings.
- For mobile use or frequent network changes, test the actual app. WireGuard supports roaming behavior, but reconnection experience depends on the client implementation and network conditions.
- For specific security policies, check the protocol version, cryptographic configuration, provider implementation, and maintenance process rather than relying on a general ranking.
VPN services vary in which protocols they offer and how their apps implement them. Check the protocol selector and documentation for your particular service; a protocol’s capabilities do not guarantee that every provider exposes every option.
