Turn on Background graphics (Chrome or Edge) or Print backgrounds (Firefox), use Firefox’s Original format, and then check your print CSS. If you control the page, request exact color and background reproduction with print-color-adjust: exact, while remembering that the user’s print-dialog choice always has priority.
Why backgrounds disappear when printing
Browsers generally print text and foreground content while omitting background colors and images to improve readability and reduce ink use. MDN describes this as the default behavior in most browsers. A missing background in preview therefore does not, by itself, show that the image URL is invalid.
There are five separate controls to check:
- The print-preview setting that permits background graphics.
- Firefox’s output format, which can disable that setting.
@media printrules authored by the site.- The element’s
print-color-adjustvalue. - Enterprise policy that forces or removes background-graphics controls.
Work through them in that order. It separates a user-interface preference from a page-code problem.
Enable background printing in your browser
Chrome
- Open the page and press Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on macOS.
- In the print preview, expand More settings.
- Turn on Background graphics.
- Review the preview again, then print or choose Save to PDF.
Chrome administrators can set a default background-graphics mode or restrict which modes users may select. If the checkbox is absent, disabled, or returns to a fixed state, the browser may be receiving an enterprise policy rather than ignoring your click.

Microsoft Edge
- Open Print from the page menu or press Ctrl+P/Command+P.
- Expand More settings.
- Enable Background graphics.
- Check the preview and print.
Edge also supports administrator policies for the default and permitted background-graphics modes. On a managed computer, contact the administrator if the option is missing or locked.
Firefox
- Open the print dialog with Ctrl+P or Command+P.
- Expand More settings.
- Enable Print backgrounds.
- Set the format to Original rather than Simplified.
Mozilla documents that Simplified format does not allow Print backgrounds. If you need the page’s designed background, selecting Original is required even when the background checkbox appears enabled.
Any browser: test a PDF first
Save to PDF with the background option enabled. If the PDF contains the image, the browser generated the page correctly and the remaining problem is likely the physical printer driver or device settings. If the PDF also omits it, continue with the print-CSS and loading checks below.
Fix the page when you are the author
Request exact background reproduction
Apply the rule to the element that owns the background, not only to body by habit:

}economy is the normal value and permits the user agent to remove or alter backgrounds to save ink. exact asks the browser to preserve the crafted appearance. The prefixed declaration helps older WebKit-based implementations.
This is a request, not a command. The person printing can still disable background graphics, and user controls take priority over CSS. You must therefore keep the browser setting enabled when testing or documenting the workflow.
Inspect print-only CSS
Search every stylesheet, component, and utility class inside @media print. Common rules that make an on-screen background vanish include:
background-image: noneorbackground: transparent.display: none,visibility: hidden, or an opacity change on the element or an ancestor.- A smaller print height or width that clips the image.
- A changed
position,z-index, or stacking context that puts another layer over the background. - A print-specific class that replaces the image URL or uses an unavailable asset.
Check the computed style in print mode rather than relying on the source stylesheet. A rule with greater specificity, an inline declaration, or !important may be winning.

Remember that a background is not an image element
An <img> and a CSS background-image follow different layout and printing paths. If the visual is essential information rather than decoration, consider using an actual image element with meaningful alternative text and print dimensions. If it is intentionally decorative, keep the background and make sure the print version still communicates the necessary information without it.
Diagnose with Chrome DevTools
- Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I (Windows/Linux), or Command+Option+I (macOS).
- Open the DevTools menu and choose the Rendering panel. If it is not visible, open it from More tools.
- Under Emulate CSS media type, select print.
- Inspect the element that should have the background. In Computed, verify
background-image, dimensions, visibility, and both color-adjust properties. - In the Network panel, reload while emulation is active and find the image request. Check its status, response, and whether it is blocked.
Interpret the result as two different tests:
- Visible on screen, missing only in print emulation: investigate
@media print, computed dimensions, stacking, andprint-color-adjust. - Missing in both screen and print emulation: investigate the URL, authentication or CORS requirements, a blocked request, and whether the image finishes loading before preview generation.
Print emulation does not replace the final print-dialog test. It reveals print CSS; the browser’s background preference is evaluated separately in the preview.
Troubleshooting common symptoms

Make the result reliable in a production page
Load before preview
Lazy-loaded or authenticated images can still be unavailable when the preview is generated. Confirm the request has completed and that the final URL is accessible in the same session. For a controlled print action, wait for the image’s load event (or an equivalent application-ready signal) before invoking printing.
Keep print rules explicit
Put print-specific declarations together in a dedicated @media print block and document which backgrounds are required. This makes future refactoring less likely to introduce background: none or a clipping rule. Test at the actual page sizes your users select, because a background that fits Letter may be cropped on A4 or with different margins.

Separate browser output from printer output
Use a PDF with backgrounds enabled as a repeatable artifact. Compare it with the physical page only after the PDF is correct. This avoids changing CSS to compensate for a printer-driver setting that never affected preview generation.
