To convert an MHTML file to PDF, open the local .mhtml or .mht file in a browser that can render it, open the browser’s print dialog, choose a PDF destination such as Save as PDF, check the preview, and save. The conversion uses the browser’s rendered, paginated view, so inspect the saved PDF for missing content and unexpected page breaks.
What happens when you convert MHTML to PDF?
MHTML (also called MIME HTML, and commonly saved with an .mht or .mhtml extension) packages a webpage and associated resources such as images and CSS into one archive file. Chrome for Developers describes MHTML as “a standard format supported by most browsers.” The archive is useful for keeping a webpage and its resources together for offline viewing.
A PDF conversion is not simply a change of file extension. The browser renders the archived page and lays that result out across printable pages. Page size, margins, scale, headers and footers, background graphics, and the browser’s rendering of the archive can all affect the PDF. The output may therefore differ from the MHTML file’s on-screen appearance.
Before you start
- Locate the MHTML file and note whether its extension is
.mhtor.mhtml. - Use a browser that can render the particular archive. Chrome and Edge are practical options; Firefox can also be tried, but its general print instructions do not establish compatibility with every MHTML file or build.
- Check that the page looks complete in the browser before printing. If an image or style is already missing there, printing is unlikely to restore it.
- If the archive contains private or sensitive material, prefer local browser printing over uploading it to an online converter. With local printing, the file stays on your device during this workflow.
Convert MHTML to PDF in Chrome
- Open Chrome and open the MHTML file. You can drag the file into a Chrome window, use Chrome’s Open command, or double-click it if your operating system associates MHTML files with Chrome.
- Open the print dialog using File > Print, Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on macOS.
- In the print dialog, select the available PDF destination, commonly Save as PDF. The exact label and available destinations can depend on your operating system and installed print destinations.
- Set the page range, layout, paper size, margins, scale, and background graphics as needed. Check the preview as you change settings.
- Select Save, choose the destination folder and filename, and save the PDF.
If double-clicking opens a different app, that does not mean the file is unusable. Open it from within Chrome or drag it into a browser window instead.

Convert MHTML to PDF in Microsoft Edge
- Open the local MHTML file in Edge and confirm that the page renders as expected.
- Choose Settings and more > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- Choose the PDF destination shown by the print dialog. Its name can vary by operating system and available print destinations.
- Review the preview and adjust page range, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Save the PDF, then open it to check that its pages, images, links, and text appear as expected.
Edge’s print controls include page-range choices such as all, odd, even, or custom pages; margin choices including default, none, minimum, or custom; and scaling options such as fit to printable area, actual size, or a custom scale. You can also control date and page-number headers and footers and whether to include background graphics. The available controls can change the document’s appearance substantially.
Convert MHTML to PDF in Firefox
- Open the local file in Firefox and check whether that installed version renders it correctly.
- Open the print dialog and use the Destination dropdown to select Save to PDF.
- Review the print preview and available settings, then save the PDF and inspect the result.
Firefox’s documented print workflow includes a Save to PDF destination, but that general guidance is not a compatibility guarantee for every MHTML archive. If Firefox cannot render your file, try Chrome or Edge rather than assuming the archive itself is damaged.
Choose print settings that preserve the page
Page size, layout, and scale
Use the paper size that suits the document’s intended use. If the page is unusually wide, try landscape layout or reduce the scale. “Fit to printable area” can keep content within page boundaries, while actual size may preserve dimensions but clip content that does not fit. Inspect wide tables, code, and other content near the page edges in the preview.

Margins and page ranges
Margins affect how much content fits on each page and where page breaks fall. If content is clipped, try wider margins only if the printable area needs adjustment, or use a smaller scale to fit the content. For a long archive, choose a custom page range if you need only part of it. Check the page count and the first and last selected pages before saving.

Backgrounds, headers, and footers
Enable background graphics when colored backgrounds or visual styling are important to understanding the page. Disable them if you want to reduce ink use or avoid printing decorative backgrounds. Headers and footers can add dates or page numbers, but may not belong in a faithful-looking copy; turn them off when they overlap or distract from the archived page.
Check the PDF after saving
- Open the PDF and scan every page, especially pages with tables, large images, or content close to the margins.
- Check that page breaks have not separated headings from their content or cut off wide elements.
- Confirm that expected images, colors, and other styling are present.
- Try selecting or searching for text if you need a searchable, selectable document.
- Test important links if retaining working links matters to your use case.
Browser printing is a convenient general method, not a guarantee that every feature of a webpage archive will be reproduced identically. If the first browser’s rendering is poor, compare the file in another browser and review that browser’s print preview before saving again.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The file opens in the wrong application
Open the browser first and use its Open command, or drag the MHTML file into a browser window. Changing the operating system’s default app association is optional; it is not necessary just to convert one file.
The browser shows a blank or incomplete page
Do not print until you have checked the browser view. Try another browser that may render the archive differently. If all browsers show the same missing content, the file may not contain the resources you expect; printing cannot reliably recreate resources absent from the rendered page.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance recommends retrying the print command and restarting Edge if print preview fails. After reopening the file, try printing again. If the problem persists, test the archive in another browser with MHTML support.

The PDF clips content or has awkward page breaks
Return to the print dialog and adjust scale, layout, margins, or paper size. Use the preview to identify which setting changes the problem, then save a new copy and inspect it. For a document with very wide content, landscape orientation or a smaller scale may help.
Colors or backgrounds are missing
Check whether background graphics are enabled in the print dialog. If the browser’s page view itself lacks those colors or backgrounds, changing the print setting may not help; first try rendering the archive in another browser.

Frequently asked questions
Are .mht and .mhtml the same kind of file?
Both extensions are commonly used for MHTML web archives. A browser’s ability to open a particular file depends on how that browser handles that archive.
Will converting the file delete or change the original?
Printing creates a separate PDF file; save it under a new filename or in a different folder if you want to keep the original archive unchanged.
