Save a web page as PDF with Chrome

Chrome’s documented desktop flow is the fastest option for a one-off page. It works on Windows, Linux and macOS; use Ctrl+P on Windows/Linux or Command+P on Mac.

1. Open the page in Chrome and wait for content, fonts and images to finish loading.
2. Open the print dialog with the keyboard shortcut, or choose Chrome’s menu and then Print.
3. Set the destination to Save as PDF.
4. Choose paper size, orientation, margins, scale, background graphics and any page range the dialog offers.
5. Select Save, choose a filename and confirm the destination.

Print output follows the page’s print stylesheet. A site can hide navigation, change colors or reflow columns when printing, so preview the pages before saving. If content is missing, scroll through the page first to trigger lazy loading, allow required scripts, and then reopen Print. For confidential pages, remember that the PDF may contain text, links and images that were not visible in the initial viewport.

Automate HTML-to-PDF with Puppeteer

Puppeteer is a JavaScript/Node.js browser-automation library. Its page.pdf() method “generates a PDF of the page with the print CSS media type,” so print rules are used by default. If your design is intended for screens, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before creating the PDF.

Important Puppeteer controls

• format, or explicit width and height, sets the paper dimensions.
• margin reserves space around content; use consistent units such as mm or in.
• printBackground: true preserves background colors and images that print settings might otherwise omit.
• pageRanges can restrict output to selected pages.
• preferCSSPageSize: true lets CSS @page dimensions take precedence when your document defines them.
• displayHeaderFooter, with header and footer templates, adds repeating labels or page numbers.

Wait for the condition that actually means “ready.” networkidle2 is useful for many pages but does not guarantee that a chart finished drawing or a web font loaded. For application pages, wait for a selector, a known response, or a short, deliberate delay after the framework reports readiness.

Use Playwright for controlled PDF output

Playwright’s page.pdf() follows the same print-oriented model: its documentation says it generates a PDF with print CSS. It returns a PDF buffer, so you can write it to disk, upload it, or return it from a service.

When Playwright is the better fit

Choose it when your project already uses Playwright fixtures, browser contexts, authentication or multi-browser automation. Create a context with the locale, timezone, color scheme and permissions your page expects, then navigate with the same authenticated state used by your tests. The PDF-specific settings cover paper dimensions, margins, page ranges, backgrounds and CSS page-size preference; they do not remove page-specific layout problems.

Both libraries run a real browser, so account for browser binaries, sandbox permissions in containers, network access, fonts and page JavaScript. The output can change when the site changes its CSS or assets. See the Playwright Page API for the current option names and behavior.

Convert a page or site with Acrobat desktop

Acrobat’s desktop web-page conversion is useful when a graphical workflow is preferable to code. Adobe documents conversion from a URL or local HTML file, capture of multiple levels or an entire site, and boundaries that keep crawling on the same path or server.

1. Open Acrobat and choose its command to create a PDF from a web page.
2. Enter a URL or select a local HTML file.
3. For a site, choose the number of levels or the entire site, then set whether links may remain on the same path or server.
4. Start the conversion and inspect the resulting pages and links.

Acrobat also documents settings for layout, character encoding, bookmarks, tagged PDF structure, headers and footers. These are valuable when the PDF must be navigable or accessible rather than merely printable. The exact controls can vary by Acrobat edition, operating system and extension version; check the menus in your installed release.

For a backend that needs a documented Adobe conversion operation, Adobe PDF Services supports HTML-to-PDF input from static HTML, dynamic HTML, ZIP packages or a URL. This is an application-integration route rather than a browser shortcut. You will need to implement authentication, submit the supported input, handle the resulting PDF and apply your own retries, access controls and retention policy.

Make the output predictable

Choose print or screen styling deliberately

Print CSS commonly removes navigation and changes colors. That is usually desirable for documents, but it can surprise you when a dashboard depends on screen-only styles. Puppeteer and Playwright default to print media; explicitly emulate screen media only when that is the intended design. In Chrome, compare the print preview with the live page before saving.

Control page breaks

Use CSS @page for size and margins, and break-before, break-after and break-inside to keep headings, cards and tables together. Test long tables and very wide code blocks: a browser may split them, shrink them or clip them depending on the stylesheet.

Load fonts, images and lazy content

Wait for the page’s own “ready” signal, then verify that images and web fonts have loaded. For lazy images, scroll through the document or use a capture option that loads the full page. A PDF generated before those requests finish can contain blank boxes or fallback fonts even though the URL returned successfully.

Handle authentication and private data

Local browser tools can reuse an authenticated context; hosted conversion requires a safe mechanism such as short-lived access, custom headers or cookies. Do not place long-lived credentials in a public URL. Review the privacy and processing terms of any hosted service before sending confidential HTML; the sources listed here do not compare retention practices.

Troubleshooting common failures

The PDF is blank or missing sections

Cause: the page timed out, requires JavaScript, or content is lazy-loaded. Fix: wait for a specific selector or application-ready event, increase the navigation timeout, scroll to trigger lazy content, and inspect console and network errors. Colors or backgrounds disappeared

Cause: fixed-width elements, oversized tables, or conflicting margins. Fix: define an explicit paper size, reduce margins or scale, add print-specific responsive CSS, and use break controls. Prefer CSS page size when the document’s @page rule is authoritative.

Fonts look different

Cause: the font was not available or had not finished loading. Fix: install required fonts in the conversion environment, wait for document.fonts.ready in an automation script, and verify that remote font requests are allowed.

Automation fails in a container

Cause: missing browser binaries, sandbox restrictions or insufficient shared memory. Fix: install the library’s supported browser, follow its container guidance, grant only the required permissions, and capture logs before disabling security features.

The hosted request returns an error

Cause: invalid URL, authentication, blocked resources or a bot challenge. Fix: URL-encode the target, check credentials and response headers, provide required cookies or headers, and use a wait condition.
