If you mean one screenshot taken with a shortcut or a single command, your operating system may already provide it. If you mean a screenshot taken repeatedly on a timer, you need an app that explicitly supports scheduled or interval capture: saving screenshots automatically to a folder does not create a recurring schedule. The right steps depend on your operating system, whether you want one display or several, and whether you need a one-time capture, a timed series, or ongoing monitoring.

Choose the kind of automatic capture you need

“Automatically” can mean two different things. A one-time capture happens when you press a key or choose a capture command; the computer takes the screenshot without requiring you to draw around the screen. A recurring capture runs again on a timer or schedule, which requires software that offers that behavior.

  • One full-screen snapshot: Use a built-in operating-system capture feature, such as Windows Snipping Tool’s Full screen mode or Print Screen.
  • A finite timed series: Choose a capture utility that supports scheduled sessions and set its interval and number of captures.
  • Repeated capture until you stop it: Use software with an interval mode, and confirm it is intended for your use case.

Before choosing a method, decide whether you want the current display, every connected monitor, a particular app window, or a region. “Full screen” does not always mean all monitors.

Windows: capture the whole screen once

For a one-time full-screen image, Microsoft documents both Snipping Tool’s Full screen snip and the Print Screen key. Snipping Tool is useful when you want a saved capture and access to its capture settings; Print Screen is a quick static snapshot placed on the clipboard.

Use Snipping Tool

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Choose the capture mode for a snip, then select Full screen.
  3. Take the capture. Microsoft describes Full screen as immediately capturing a snapshot of the entire screen.
  4. Save the image if needed. Microsoft’s current support documentation says captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder; you can change automatic saving or the default folder in Snipping Tool Settings.

Snipping Tool also offers a capture delay of 1–5 seconds, according to Microsoft’s documentation. A delay is useful when you need time to open a menu or arrange the screen, but it is still a one-time capture—not a repeating timer.

Use Print Screen

Press PrtSc to take a static snapshot of the screen to the clipboard, as documented by Microsoft. Paste it into an image editor or another app that accepts images, then save it if you need a file. This method is direct, but the documented behavior is clipboard capture rather than a scheduled sequence.

Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its support page also identifies some newer features as Copilot+ PC-only, so do not assume every feature shown in Windows documentation is available on every PC.

Windows: capture screenshots on a schedule

The Windows methods above cover a one-time capture and automatic saving. They do not establish a built-in recurring schedule. For a timed series, use an application whose documentation explicitly says it can repeat screenshots or run a scheduled session. Before leaving a capture running, check whether it can capture the display you need, how it handles sleep or locked sessions, and where it saves the files; those details are specific to the app.

macOS: use a documented scheduled or interval tool

The cited macOS options here are third-party utilities rather than a claim that macOS itself provides an unattended recurring screenshot schedule. Shotomatic documents a scheduled session for capturing a screen, app window, or selected area. Its Quick Start guide, updated August 10, 2026, suggests an initial example of five screenshots one second apart with a short countdown. That is the vendor’s suggested setup, not an independently tested result.

Set up a Shotomatic session

  1. Choose whether the session should capture a display, an app window, or a selected area.
  2. Set the schedule and session parameters, including how many captures to make and the spacing between them.
  3. For an initial check, Shotomatic’s guide suggests five screenshots one second apart and a short countdown.
  4. Grant the permissions the utility requests, then verify the output and export settings before relying on a longer session.

Shotomatic says Screen Recording permission enables capture of displays and app windows. It says Accessibility permission enables automated keypresses, window focusing, and Action Capture clicks. If macOS prompts for access, review the prompt and the current privacy settings on the version you have installed. Permission labels and settings can change between OS versions.

Use Pluely only when its interval workflow fits

Pluely documents two automatic modes: Once and Interval. Its documentation says, “Interval captures a screenshot and asks a question automatically every set number of seconds, on a repeating loop.” The page describes Interval as a Pro feature. This workflow pairs screenshots with questions about changing visual content; do not treat it as a general-purpose archival or unattended monitoring utility unless its current behavior fits that purpose.

Pluely says macOS screen capture requires Screen Recording permission. Its region capture can be drawn on whichever display contains the content you want. Check its current documentation and settings for the exact interval and stop behavior before starting a repeating run.

Linux: check the desktop session before relying on automation

Linux screenshot behavior depends on the desktop session, compositor, and how the app is installed. ksnip documents full-screen capture that includes all screens or monitors on supported platforms, but its behavior is not universal across Linux setups.

In particular, ksnip’s documentation says GNOME Wayland version 41 and later and Snap builds support portal screenshots only. A compositor-mediated portal popup requires confirmation, and implementation can vary by compositor. That interaction can prevent a capture from running unattended. Check the ksnip documentation for your session and package type rather than assuming that an X11 shortcut or workflow will behave the same on Wayland.

Confirm what “full screen” includes

Capture scope is easy to overlook when a computer has multiple displays. The documented products use different terms and behaviors:

  • Shotomatic: Describes selecting one display for a session.
  • Pluely: Says a region can be drawn on whichever display contains the desired content.
  • ksnip: Lists a full-screen mode that includes all screens or monitors on supported platforms.

Before starting a recurring capture, take a single test and inspect the resulting image. Confirm whether it shows the current display, the selected display, or all displays, and whether the app window or region is cropped as expected.

Choose a capture method by trigger, scope, and destination

Need Documented option What to verify
One-time full-screen capture on Windows Snipping Tool Full screen or Print Screen Whether you want a saved snip or a clipboard image
Scheduled session on macOS Shotomatic Display/window/region, session schedule, permissions, and export settings

For any tool, check four things before settling on it: operating-system and session support; capture scope; trigger type (manual, one-time, interval, or scheduled session); and permission or confirmation requirements. Also check where captures go. Microsoft documents clipboard and Screenshots-folder behavior for its Windows options, while Shotomatic documents export options for its sessions.

Troubleshoot missed, incomplete, or unexpected captures

The app captures once, but does not repeat

Check that you started a documented interval or scheduled mode rather than enabling automatic saving. In Snipping Tool, automatic saving determines where captures are stored; Microsoft’s documentation does not describe that setting as a recurring schedule.

The capture is blank or the wrong size

Check the selected source—display, window, or region—and take a test image. On a multi-monitor setup, confirm which display the app selected and whether its full-screen mode includes all monitors on your platform.

macOS will not capture the screen or automate actions

Review macOS’s current privacy settings and the utility’s permission prompts. Shotomatic documents Screen Recording for display and window capture, and Accessibility for automated keypresses, window focusing, and Action Capture clicks. Pluely documents Screen Recording for macOS capture.

A Linux capture waits for confirmation or cannot run unattended

Check whether you are using GNOME Wayland 41 or later or a Snap build with ksnip. Its documentation says those cases use portal screenshots; a compositor-mediated popup requires confirmation, with behavior varying by compositor. A portal prompt is not the same as a failed screenshot, but it may make unattended capture unsuitable.

You cannot find the saved image

Check the destination configured in the application. On Windows, Microsoft says Snipping Tool snips are automatically saved in the Screenshots folder by default and that the folder or automatic-save behavior can be changed in Settings. For other tools, confirm their export or session destination rather than assuming they use the Windows folder.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a replacement for capturing your computer’s physical desktop. Use it when what you need is a screenshot of a web page returned as an image or PDF. One GET request captures a URL; the example below saves a WebP response.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions

Will a scheduled screenshot keep running while my computer is asleep?

The cited product documentation does not establish capture behavior during sleep or a locked session. Check the current documentation for the utility and test the exact state you plan to use.

Can I capture a website screenshot and a screenshot of my whole desktop with the same method?

Not necessarily. Operating-system capture tools target your display or desktop content; a website screenshot API captures a web page. Choose based on the source you need.
