For a screenshot saved with Windows logo key + PrtScn, open File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots. That is the standard Windows 10 location documented by Microsoft. If the folder is empty, you may have used a clipboard-only shortcut, still need to save a Snipping Tool capture, or have changed the Snipping Tool or Pictures-folder settings.

The standard Windows 10 screenshot location

Open File Explorer from the taskbar. In the navigation pane, select Pictures, then open Screenshots. Microsoft identifies this as the location for screenshots saved with the Windows logo key and PrtScn shortcut.

  1. Press Windows logo key + E to open File Explorer, or select its taskbar icon.
  2. Select Pictures in the left navigation pane.
  3. Open Screenshots.
  4. Sort by Date modified if you are looking for the most recent image.

The exact location on your computer can differ if you changed the Snipping Tool save setting or moved the Pictures folder. The navigation above is therefore the correct starting point, not a guarantee that every Windows 10 installation still uses an unchanged folder.

Which screenshot shortcut did you use?

Windows has several capture methods. They do not all create a file in the Screenshots folder.

Shortcut or tool What it captures What happens immediately Where to look
Windows logo key + PrtScn The whole screen Windows saves an image file Pictures > Screenshots, unless its folder has been changed
PrtScn The whole screen The image is copied to the Clipboard; it may not create a file Paste into an image editor, document or message, then save it yourself
Windows logo key + Shift + S A rectangular, free-form, window or full-screen snip, depending on your selection The capture opens in the Snipping Tool workflow for editing and saving The automatic-save folder configured in Snipping Tool, normally Screenshots unless changed
Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar A whole-screen screenshot on supported devices without a dedicated PrtScn key Acts as the hardware-specific alternative Microsoft lists for Print Screen Check Pictures > Screenshots first

Keyboard layouts and hardware matter. Some laptops do not label a key PrtScn, or require the Fn key to use the Print Screen function. If a shortcut appears to do nothing, check the symbols on the top row of the keyboard and try the documented Fn combination.

How to find a Snipping Tool capture

Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. After selecting an area, the snip is copied to the Snipping Tool window, where you can annotate it and save it.

Save a snip manually

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S.
  2. Choose the capture mode and drag over the area, or select the window or full-screen option.
  3. Select the notification or Snipping Tool window that appears.
  4. Use the Save control, choose a destination, name the file and confirm.

A manual Save as operation can put an additional copy anywhere you choose. If you cannot see the image in Pictures > Screenshots, check the location shown in the Save dialog and the folder you selected previously.

Check automatic-save behavior

Microsoft’s current Snipping Tool instructions say a captured snip is automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. Snipping Tool settings can change whether automatic saving occurs and can change the default Screenshots folder. Open Snipping Tool, open its settings, and review the automatic-save option and the displayed default folder. The wording and controls can vary with the Snipping Tool version installed on your Windows 10 PC.

Why your screenshot is not in Pictures > Screenshots

You pressed PrtScn without the Windows key

Pressing PrtScn alone normally copies the whole-screen image to the Clipboard. There is no file to find until you paste it into an application and save it.

  1. Open Paint or another application that accepts images.
  2. Press Ctrl + V to paste the Clipboard contents.
  3. Use File > Save as, choose an image format and select a folder.

The Clipboard is temporary. If you copied something else afterward or restarted the computer, the screenshot may no longer be available there.

The snip has not been saved

A Snipping Tool selection can remain in the editing window without being written to disk. Return to that window and use Save. If you closed it, repeat the capture and save it immediately.

Automatic saving is disabled or points elsewhere

Review Snipping Tool’s settings rather than assuming the standard folder is still active. A changed default folder means new snips can be saved somewhere other than Pictures > Screenshots. Use the folder shown in the setting or the Save dialog as the authoritative location for that PC.

The Pictures folder was moved

Windows permits a user’s known folders, including Pictures, to be relocated. If Pictures is not where you normally expect it, use File Explorer’s navigation pane, search for the Pictures folder, or inspect the location shown in its properties. Do not assume a missing Screenshots subfolder proves that the image was never captured.

The keyboard shortcut did not activate

Confirm that the key combination matches your hardware. Try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on a device without a PrtScn key, or use Snipping Tool as a visual alternative. On an external keyboard, make sure the Windows key is not disabled by a hardware or gaming-mode switch.

A reliable workflow for each capture type

  • Need a whole-screen file immediately: use Windows logo key + PrtScn, then check Pictures > Screenshots.
  • Need to paste the screen into another program: use PrtScn, paste with Ctrl + V, and save from that program.
  • Need only part of the screen or annotations: use Windows logo key + Shift + S, edit in Snipping Tool and save.
  • No PrtScn key: try the Fn alternative listed above or use Snipping Tool.

When diagnosing a missing file, identify the shortcut first. That one detail usually tells you whether to inspect a folder, the Clipboard, or an unsaved Snipping Tool window.

Search and verify the file in File Explorer

If you know the capture was saved but cannot see it, open File Explorer and search within Pictures for recently modified image files. Switch to a details view and sort by modification time. Check common image extensions such as PNG, JPEG or the format you selected in the Save dialog. Searching from the Pictures folder is safer than searching the entire drive because it keeps the results tied to the location Windows normally uses for screenshots.

If the file opens but looks old, compare its modification time with the moment you pressed the shortcut. A recently modified file confirms that the capture succeeded even if the folder view was sorted differently.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • No Screenshots folder visible: verify that you used Windows logo key + PrtScn or a Snipping Tool save. A PrtScn-only capture is not expected to create the folder entry or a file.
  • Folder exists but is empty: check the Snipping Tool automatic-save setting and whether the Pictures folder was moved.
  • Nothing appears after Windows logo key + PrtScn: test the keyboard’s Windows and PrtScn keys separately, then try the Fn alternative or Snipping Tool.
  • Snipping Tool shows the image but File Explorer does not: save it manually and note the exact destination in the Save dialog.
  • You found a file but it is not the latest capture: sort by Date modified and check that the shortcut actually completed; another application may have received the Clipboard image instead.
  • You changed a setting and cannot remember the old folder: open Snipping Tool settings and use the current default location shown there. General Windows instructions cannot determine a custom path on an individual PC.

Or skip the browser setup

The methods above are for screenshots of your Windows desktop. If what you really need is a clean image or PDF of a website, ScreenshotNeo captures the page through one API request, so you do not have to open a browser, handle a consent dialog or automate a desktop window. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Windows’ local desktop shortcuts.

For example, this cURL request captures a website as a WebP file (the API can also return PNG, JPEG or PDF):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for authentication, response options and the complete parameter list. Equivalent Python and Node.js calls are:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

What the API handles for you

  • It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be disabled.
  • Only clean shots are billed. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
  • An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
  • Capture controls include full-page screenshots with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets plus custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size/margins/orientation/page ranges, HTML/CSS rendering, custom JavaScript, pre-capture clicks, hidden selectors, selector or delay waits, network-idle waits, ad/tracker/request/resource blocking, custom headers/cookies/user agents/Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed public image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
  • Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan, and yearly billing provides two months free. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to try it without adding a card.

Bottom line

Start with File Explorer > Pictures > Screenshots when you used Windows logo key + PrtScn. If the image is absent, determine whether you used PrtScn alone (Clipboard), Snipping Tool (save or settings), or a keyboard without a PrtScn key. Those distinctions explain nearly every missing-screenshot case on Windows 10.
