Choose by what you need to capture: ShareX is a Windows option for screenshots, annotations, scrolling captures and upload workflows; Flameshot is a cross-platform choice for annotated screenshots and scripted captures; OBS Studio is for composed video recording and live streaming. They solve different problems, so the best fit depends on your operating system and whether you need a still image, a short clip or a multi-source recording. Which kind of screen capture do you need?
“Screen capture” can mean a single image, a short recording or a production-style video assembled from several inputs. Start by naming the output before choosing software:
- Screenshot: a still image for a bug report, documentation page or design review.
- Annotated screenshot: a still image marked up with arrows, text, highlights, blur or numbered steps.
- Scripted screenshot: an image triggered from a command line, script or keyboard binding rather than only through an on-screen workflow.
- Short screen recording or GIF: a brief demonstration of a sequence of actions.
- Video recording or stream: a longer composition that may combine a desktop or window with audio and other sources.
For still-image work, compare ShareX and Flameshot first. For multi-source video or streaming, start with OBS Studio. Using OBS for a one-off annotated still may expose more configuration than the task needs; choosing a screenshot annotator for a narrated, multi-source walkthrough may leave important production controls out of the workflow.

ShareX: a Windows toolkit for screenshot workflows
ShareX is a strong starting point when your development work happens on Windows and the task involves more than taking a plain screenshot. Its project documentation describes it as a free, open-source Windows tool and identifies developers, technical writers and QA testers among its audiences.
Where it fits
- Long pages or interfaces: scrolling capture can help document content that extends beyond the visible screen.
- Bug reports and guides: annotation and redaction let you point to a control or obscure information before sharing an image.
- Text from an image: OCR is available when you need to recognize text in a capture.
- Repeatable actions: hotkeys and post-capture workflows can reduce repetitive steps, while upload automation can send captures to destinations you configure.
- Short demonstrations: the project lists short screen recordings and GIFs as supported uses.
ShareX is the most directly documented choice of the three for a Windows developer who wants still captures, annotation and a configurable post-capture or upload workflow in one application. That is a match between documented features and a use case, not a claim that it is faster or easier than the alternatives.
When to look elsewhere
The stated platform for ShareX is Windows. If you need a project whose listed downloads cover macOS or Linux, consider Flameshot instead. If the deliverable needs scenes, mixed audio or streaming, OBS is the closer fit.
Flameshot: annotated screenshots across desktop platforms
Flameshot describes itself as free, open source and cross-platform. Its current project homepage lists Windows 64-bit installer and portable options, macOS through Homebrew or a DMG, and Linux options including AppImage and package managers. Because package availability can change, consult the project’s download page for the current package for your operating system rather than assuming every distribution uses the same installation method.

Where it fits
Flameshot’s central documented workflow is capturing a screenshot and marking it up on screen. Its annotation tools include arrows, text, highlights, blur or pixelation, and numbered markers. That makes it a sensible candidate for a cross-platform team that needs to explain a visual issue without turning the task into a video-editing workflow.
The project also documents a command-line interface that can be called from scripts or key bindings. That matters when a developer wants to trigger capture from an existing workflow rather than rely solely on manual interaction. The available information establishes CLI use for capture, but does not specify a universal command line for every operating system or a particular automation setup; check the project’s current instructions for the exact syntax and platform prerequisites.
When to look elsewhere
If you rely on ShareX’s documented scrolling capture, OCR or configured upload workflow, Flameshot’s listed annotation and CLI features are not evidence that it provides those same capabilities. Conversely, the ShareX platform listing does not make it the cross-platform choice. Match the documented feature you actually need rather than treating the tools as interchangeable.
OBS Studio: recording, scenes and streaming
OBS Studio is aimed at video production rather than screenshot annotation. Its feature documentation describes building scenes from window captures and other sources, mixing audio, using hotkeys, extending workflows with plugins, and scripting with Lua or Python. Capture cards are among its documented source types. This broader production workflow makes OBS the first candidate here for a narrated walkthrough, a recording that combines visual or audio inputs, or a live stream.

Platforms, version and license
The OBS homepage lists Windows 10/11, macOS 12 or newer, and Linux support. When checked on September 29, 2026, that page displayed version 32.2.2 with a release date of August 14, but did not give a year beside that date. Do not infer a release year from the date alone; check the project page for the current release before installing.
The OBS help portal states that OBS is GPLv2 and may be used commercially without restrictions. The portal advises downloading OBS from its official website. Licensing terms can matter when incorporating software into a commercial workflow, so consult the project’s current license information for the terms that apply to your intended use.
When OBS is the right scale
Choose OBS when you need to compose and control a recording: for example, a walkthrough with a captured window and audio, or a stream built from multiple sources. A single screenshot with arrows and a blur is a different task; a screenshot-focused tool may be a more direct fit. This is a distinction in the documented feature sets, not a usability test.
A capture card is an optional route only if you need to record output from a separate device. OBS lists capture cards among its source types, but ordinary desktop capture does not establish a need to buy one. A microphone can be useful for narration, but no particular accessory or model is required by the documented software workflows.

If two rows describe your work, choose based on the deliverable that has the stricter requirements. For instance, a marked-up screenshot and a narrated video may call for different tools even when they document the same bug.
A practical workflow for developer captures
- Decide what the recipient needs to see. Use a still image for a static state, annotation for a visual explanation, and video when the sequence or audio matters.
- Check platform fit before configuring anything. ShareX is listed for Windows; Flameshot lists Windows, macOS and Linux; OBS lists Windows, macOS and Linux, with its homepage specifying Windows 10/11 and macOS 12 or newer.
- Select the workflow, not just the file format. For a Windows still with scrolling capture or upload automation, evaluate ShareX. For a cross-platform annotated still or CLI-triggered capture, evaluate Flameshot. For composed recording or streaming, evaluate OBS.
- Capture only what the audience needs. Frame the relevant region or window where the selected tool permits it. For a recording, plan which sources and audio belong in the scene; for a still, identify sensitive information that should be redacted or obscured before sharing.
- Review the result before distributing it. Check that the intended content is visible and that annotations or redactions communicate the issue. For automated uploads, verify that the destination is one you configured and intend to use.
These are workflow recommendations, not claims that a particular configuration is built in or that any tool has been tested against a specific application. Use each project’s current instructions for installation and platform-specific controls.
Installation, licensing and safe-use checks
- ShareX: the project identifies the application as free and open source for Windows and points users to its official website, GitHub releases, Microsoft Store or Steam. The information here does not establish a precise minimum Windows requirement.
- Flameshot: the project calls it free, open source and cross-platform. Its listed package choices differ by operating system, so confirm the current download and installation instructions for your platform.

- The application is not listed for your operating system. Check the project’s current platform downloads. ShareX is listed for Windows; Flameshot lists Windows, macOS and Linux; OBS lists Windows, macOS and Linux. A download listing does not guarantee every package or feature is identical across operating systems.
- You cannot find a scrolling-capture, OCR or upload workflow in the tool you chose. Those are documented ShareX capabilities. Recheck that your requirement is supported by the selected tool instead of assuming all screenshot apps expose the same workflow.
- You need a screenshot command to run from automation. Flameshot documents CLI capture for scripts or key bindings. Consult its current instructions for the exact command and platform setup; the available feature description does not establish identical syntax across platforms.
- Your screenshot task is turning into a scene-configuration task. If the output is a still with annotations, reconsider whether a screenshot tool is a more direct fit. OBS’s documented scenes and audio controls address recording and streaming workflows.
- You need to capture a separate device but have no capture card. OBS lists capture cards as a source type, but that does not make one necessary for desktop capture. A separate-device capture requirement is the relevant reason to investigate that hardware path.
