Installation routes
The official macOS instructions list three distribution paths:
- Homebrew: use the Flameshot package documented for Homebrew, then launch the application from Applications or Spotlight.
- MacPorts: install the MacPorts package if that is how your Mac is managed.
- DMG download: download the project’s macOS disk image, copy the app to Applications and launch it.

macOS security checks can block an app downloaded outside the Mac App Store. If Gatekeeper prevents launch, open the system’s Privacy & Security settings and follow the allow-open option shown for the blocked application. Flameshot’s instructions also describe granting Screen Recording access. The wording and location of these controls vary by macOS release, so follow the current on-screen prompt and the project’s current instructions rather than an old click path.

Treat that inventory as a statement from the project, not an independent benchmark. Before adopting Reticle, check the latest release date, supported macOS versions, package-signing status and where captures are stored. Try a representative set of tasks: a window containing protected content, a long browser page, a Retina display and a recording with microphone or system audio if those matter to you.
macshot: another feature-rich project
macshot also presents itself as a macOS-focused option and lists capture, annotation, OCR, scrolling capture and recording. It is worth evaluating when you prefer a Mac-specific interface or want several media types in one application.

Long webpages and documents
Reticle or macshot may fit if their current builds deliver the scrolling capture they describe. Test pages with lazy-loaded images, sticky headers and embedded frames; these are common sources of missing or repeated content in long captures.

Reticle and macshot both list OCR, while Shottr’s vendor page does too. Compare recognition on your actual languages, fonts and dark-mode screens instead of assuming that a feature label means equal accuracy.
Video or screen recording
Reticle and macshot describe recording capabilities. Confirm output format, frame-rate controls, audio handling and file size before using either for training or demos. Flameshot should be selected primarily for still captures and annotation.
Scripts and repeatable capture
Flameshot is the only option in this set whose documentation explicitly identifies a CLI for both Linux and macOS. For a larger website-capture pipeline, a browser-based API is usually more predictable than driving a desktop session.
Reliability and privacy checklist
- Keep captures local unless an upload destination is intentional and approved.
- Review screenshots for passwords, tokens, private messages and personal data before sharing.
- Test after every major macOS upgrade; screen-capture permissions can be reset or re-requested.
- Use a consistent naming scheme and image format so documentation remains searchable.

Common problems and fixes
The app opens, but the capture is blank or missing another window
Check Screen Recording permission in Privacy & Security, enable the application, quit it completely and relaunch. If the target is protected content, macOS or the target application may intentionally prevent capture.

A scrolling capture stops early
Make sure the target is a page that exposes scrollable content to the tool. Wait for images and dynamic sections to finish loading, disable overlays that intercept scrolling, and compare the result with the live page.
OCR output is inaccurate
Increase text size or contrast before capture, avoid heavily compressed images and proofread names, numbers and code. OCR quality varies by language and typography; retain the original image when exact wording matters.
A CLI script works interactively but fails unattended
Run it under the same macOS user that granted Screen Recording access, use absolute paths for output, and log the exit status. Test one capture first, then add retries or batching only after the single-shot path is reliable.
