To search the web by image, open Google Lens, Bing Visual Search, or TinEye, then upload the picture, paste its URL, or select it from your device. Review both visually similar results and pages that use the image. For better leads, crop the important area, try a second service, and verify dates, captions, and ownership on the original pages.
Choose the right reverse image search service
These services answer slightly different questions. Google Lens is usually the best first stop for identifying objects and finding similar pictures. Bing Visual Search can return pages, related images, products, and recipes. TinEye is particularly useful for locating exact or modified copies and sorting matches by criteria such as oldest found or biggest image.
| Service | Useful for | Inputs and controls | Privacy statement from the provider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Lens | Object recognition, similar images, and websites containing the same or a similar image | Upload, drag and drop, image URL, camera or existing photo; crop a region and add words | Google says it may store image URLs searched. Check the current policy before submitting sensitive material. |
| Bing Visual Search | Pages using an image, related images, object information, products, and recipes | Upload, drag and drop, webcam photo, image URL, or mobile camera/photo | Microsoft says submitted photos may be used to improve Bing image-processing services. |
| TinEye | Exact copies, altered versions, and image-history leads | Upload, drag and drop, clipboard paste, or image URL; sort and filter results | TinEye says submitted search images are not saved or added to its index. |
Privacy terms and interface labels can change, so read the currently displayed notice before uploading confidential, personal, or unreleased material.
Search by image with Google Lens
On a computer
- Open Google Search and select Search by image (the camera icon).
- Choose one of the available methods: upload a file, drag the image into the search box, or paste an image URL.
- Inspect the visual matches and the websites that contain the same or similar image.
- Select a detected object or draw a region around the part that matters. Add a few descriptive words, such as visible text, a person’s profession, a landmark, or a color, to refine the results.
In Chrome, you can also right-click an image on a webpage and choose Search with Google Lens. Google documents Lens support in most modern browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

On Android
- Open the Google app or Chrome app and use the Lens camera icon.
- Take a photo or choose an existing image.
- Select the relevant region when Lens offers a selection box, then add words to narrow the search.
On iPhone or iPad
Use Lens in the Google or Chrome app, take or upload a picture, select the useful region, and refine with text. Labels and controls vary by app version, so follow the wording shown on your device.
Lens compares objects in an image with other images and uses relevance signals such as words, language, and host-page metadata. Its ranking is not a complete inventory: a missing result does not prove that no matching page exists.
Search with Bing Visual Search
- Open Bing and select Images.
- Click the camera icon.
- Drag in an image, upload a file, paste an image or image URL, or take a webcam photo. On mobile, take or upload a picture.
- Review related images, pages that use the picture, and any object, product, or recipe information.
Bing warns that AI-assisted interpretation can be wrong. Treat labels as suggestions and confirm important identifications using the page’s text and independent sources.
Search an image with TinEye
- Open TinEye and drag an image into the search area, paste one from your clipboard, upload a file, or enter its URL.
- Review exact and altered matches. Use filters for a domain, image collection, or stock-photo sources when available.
- Sort by Best Match, Most Changed, Biggest Image, Newest, or Oldest.
TinEye fetches the image when you submit a URL and says URL searches return the same results as uploading the file. Its Oldest result is the earliest copy TinEye found, not proof of when or by whom the image was created.

1. Start with the clearest source
Use the original-resolution file whenever possible. If the image contains several subjects, crop to the logo, face, object, or distinctive detail you want to identify. Cropping removes unrelated pixels that can mislead visual matching.
2. Separate “similar” from “same image” results
Similar-image results help identify an object, style, or location. Pages using the image are stronger evidence that a particular copy appeared online. Open the result pages rather than relying only on thumbnails.

3. Run a second service
Try another index when the first service finds little, or when the file is a diagram, logo, screenshot, meme, or heavily edited image. Different indexes and matching systems may contain different copies.
4. Add precise words
Include readable text, a place name, a brand, a model number, or a visible context clue. A few specific terms are generally more useful than a long sentence.
5. Verify the page context
Compare captions, surrounding text, publication dates, author information, and independent sources. A page may reuse an old photograph with a new or incorrect caption.
How to investigate where an image came from
Google’s About this image, where available, may show when Google first saw the image or a visually similar version, other pages using it, and earlier appearances. Availability is limited in some regions. “First seen” is approximate, and metadata can be changed by editing software.
TinEye’s oldest-found, biggest-image, and most-changed views can reveal useful versions. They do not establish authorship, licensing, or the original publication. A stock-photo result may identify a licensor, but confirm the license on the provider’s own page.
When documenting a finding, save the page URL, the displayed date, the caption, and a screenshot of the relevant context. Record uncertainty explicitly: “earliest copy found by this service” is more accurate than “original image.”

What reverse image search can miss
- Indexes do not contain every public page, and private, blocked, newly published, or removed pages may be absent.
- Matching systems can return a merely similar image instead of the exact file.
- Crops, recompression, mirrored images, text overlays, color changes, and screenshots can reduce matches.
- An image with no result has not been proven unique or offline.
A 2022 preliminary study by Shawn M. Jones and Diane Oyen tested 200 abstract images and 199 natural images from Wikimedia Commons across Baidu, Bing, Google, and Yandex. It found category-dependent retrievability, with natural photographs easier to retrieve in some comparisons. Those sample counts and findings should not be treated as a current success rate for every query.
Privacy and safety checklist
- Do not upload passports, private medical images, confidential documents, or unreleased product photos without considering the provider’s terms.
- Remove identifying metadata locally if it is not needed for your investigation.
- Prefer a crop that excludes faces, addresses, or other unrelated personal information.
- Remember that a public image URL can reveal access to the image to the service receiving it.
Troubleshooting reverse image searches
No useful matches
Crop a distinctive region, increase image quality, add visible text as keywords, and try a different service. Search both the full image and the crop.
The result identifies the wrong object
Reduce the selection to one object and add a clarifying term such as a city, brand, or model. Treat automated labels as hypotheses.
The URL search fails
Confirm that the address points directly to an accessible image file, not a webpage requiring login. Download the image and upload the file instead.
You need the earliest appearance
Use TinEye’s Oldest sort and Google’s About this image when available, then inspect dates and page context. Neither establishes creation or authorship.
You need pages that reused the picture
Open the “pages using this image” or equivalent result category rather than stopping at visually similar thumbnails. Check several results because ranking is not exhaustive.
Or skip the browser setup
If your next step is to capture a clean copy of a webpage, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is not a reverse-image index; use Lens, Bing, or TinEye to find the image first, then use ScreenshotNeo to archive a result page or other public URL without manual browser automation.
One GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The same request can be made from cURL, Python, or Node.js:

See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search from a screenshot?
Yes. Upload the screenshot or crop the element you want to identify. Text-heavy screenshots may work better when you also type the visible words.
Does reverse image search prove copyright ownership?
No. Matches and dates are leads. Confirm authorship and license with the creator, rights holder, or authoritative source.
Why do two services show different results?
They use different indexes, crawls, ranking systems, and image-matching methods. A second service can find pages the first one does not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a reverse image search find a private social-media post?
Usually not. Services can only match material available to their crawlers or the submitted URL, and private or login-protected posts may not be indexed.
Should I search the full image or a crop first?
Start with the clearest full image, then search a crop of the distinctive subject if the results are broad or irrelevant.
