To enable previews for links you send in WhatsApp, open Settings (or tap your profile picture), choose Privacy > Advanced, and turn Disable link previews off. WhatsApp says this switch is off by default. It controls previews on links you send; it does not control previews attached to links you receive.
Enable link previews in the WhatsApp app
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Open Settings. On some versions, tap your profile picture to reach settings.
- Tap Privacy.
- Tap Advanced.
- Turn Disable link previews off.
The wording is easy to misread: you are not turning on a control called “Link previews.” You are turning off the control that disables them. WhatsApp’s official guidance says, “If you turn on Disable link previews, the links you send to others won’t generate a link preview.”
Send a test link
Return to a chat, paste a complete web address, and wait briefly while WhatsApp prepares the card before sending. A preview normally contains information fetched from the linked page, such as a title, description, or image. The setting only permits WhatsApp to try; it is not a guarantee that every URL will produce a card.
What the privacy setting does—and does not do
Links you send
With Disable link previews off, WhatsApp may fetch information for a URL you are about to send and attach a preview. With it on, links you send appear without that generated preview.

Links you receive
Your setting does not remove or enable previews generated for links sent by other people. WhatsApp describes the control as applying to links you send, so changing it is not a universal switch for every preview visible in your chats.
IP-address explanation
WhatsApp presents disabling previews as an optional advanced security measure intended to protect the sender’s IP address. Its explanation also says that receiving link previews has no impact on your IP address. Those are separate situations: sending a URL with previews enabled can involve a fetch associated with the sender, while merely receiving someone else’s preview is treated differently in WhatsApp’s explanation.
If a particular URL still has no preview
First confirm the switch is off, then paste the URL again and allow the app to finish preparing the message. The official consumer help guidance does not document a single, universal cause or fix for a missing preview on a specific website. Avoid assuming that reinstalling WhatsApp or changing a phone-wide network setting will solve every URL.
- Check the address: use a complete, publicly reachable URL rather than an internal hostname, a local development address, or a link that requires your logged-in session.
- Try the page in a browser: if the page itself is unavailable, redirects repeatedly, or requires an interactive sign-in, WhatsApp may not obtain useful preview data.
- Wait before sending: paste the address and let the card-generation attempt complete. Sending immediately can leave you with a plain URL.
- Test another public page: this separates an app-setting problem from a URL-specific problem. A second URL producing a card points toward the first site rather than your privacy toggle.
- Update WhatsApp: menu labels and behavior can vary by app version. Install the current version offered for your device, then recheck Privacy > Advanced.
- Check connectivity: switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data if the page cannot be reached. Corporate filters, VPNs, DNS blockers, or captive portals can interfere with fetching page information.
Do not promise yourself or your recipients that a preview will appear for every URL. The documented setting authorizes previews for links you send, but it does not establish universal URL compatibility.

Website metadata: what site owners can provide
A technical document copy labeled Link Previews | Developer Documentation recommends supplying Open Graph metadata in the page’s HTML <head>. Because the copy is hosted outside a WhatsApp-owned domain, treat these as implementation guidance rather than a definitive, current guarantee of WhatsApp behavior.
<meta property="og:title" content="A concise page title">
<meta property="og:description" content="A useful summary of the page.">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/article">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/share-card.jpg">
- Use non-empty values for
og:title,og:description, andog:url. - Use an absolute HTTPS URL for
og:image, not a relative path. - Place the tags in the document head, not only in client-rendered content that appears after JavaScript runs.
- Make sure the image and page can be fetched without a login, geoblock, or expiring authorization token.
Correct metadata improves the information available to a crawler, but it cannot force WhatsApp to display a card. Image dimensions, cache timing, redirects, robots rules, and platform changes can still affect the result. The technical copy includes detailed size and placement constraints; those specifics are not independently confirmed by an official WhatsApp-owned source in the material available for this guide.
Business sending is a different workflow
WhatsApp Business Platform Cloud API
If your system sends messages through Meta’s WhatsApp Business Platform Cloud API, request a preview in the text object rather than changing a consumer phone’s privacy setting. A representative request body is:
{
"messaging_product": "whatsapp",
"to": "RECIPIENT_PHONE_NUMBER",
"type": "text",
"text": {
"preview_url": true,
"body": "Read the full update at https://example.com/update"
}
}
preview_url: true is an API parameter for a business sender. It is not the same control as Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Disable link previews in the consumer app. Your access token, phone-number ID, recipient format, and endpoint details still need to follow Meta’s current Cloud API requirements.

WhatsApp Business app short links
The WhatsApp Business app can create a short link that opens a conversation with your business. Open Tools > Short link, then copy or share the generated link and optionally configure a default message. This is a customer-to-business chat entry point; it is not a mechanism for forcing a preview for an arbitrary external website URL.
Link previews in Status
Meta announced in February 2023 that posting a link to WhatsApp Status would show a visual preview similar to a link sent in a message. The announcement described a global rollout over the following weeks. That launch statement does not establish that the behavior is identical on every current app version, device, or account, so check your own Status composer after updating WhatsApp.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to inspect how a page renders before you share it, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page directly through an API. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a WhatsApp setting and not a way to force WhatsApp’s own preview card.
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The service can accept consent banners before capture and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed as clean shots, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

Parameters used by other screenshot APIs also work, easing migrations.

Quick troubleshooting checklist
- No previews for anything: recheck Settings > Privacy > Advanced > Disable link previews; it must be off.
- Only one site fails: test another public URL and inspect the site’s Open Graph tags, redirects, accessibility, and image URL.
- Preview appears after sending but not before: wait for WhatsApp to finish fetching, then paste the URL again.
- Business API message has no card: verify that the API payload uses
text.preview_url: trueand that the body contains a URL. - Short link confusion: a Business app short link opens a chat; it does not create a preview for an unrelated website.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off link previews expose my IP address?
WhatsApp describes disabling previews as an optional measure to protect the sender’s IP address and says receiving previews has no impact on your IP address. Its explanation distinguishes sending from receiving.
Can I force WhatsApp to show a preview for a private or login-only page?
No documented setting guarantees that. A crawler generally needs to reach the page and its metadata without your private session, so use a publicly accessible URL when a share card matters.
Is a WhatsApp Business short link the same as a website preview?
No. The Business app short link opens a conversation with your business. A website preview is a card generated from an external URL.
The Bottom Line
Turn off Disable link previews under Settings > Privacy > Advanced, then paste the URL and wait for WhatsApp to fetch it. For a missing card, treat the URL, page accessibility, and metadata as separate variables; the setting alone cannot guarantee a preview.
