For a modern SharePoint header, use a 192 × 64 pixel main site logo and a separate 64 × 64 pixel square site-logo thumbnail. If you choose the extended header, prepare a 300 × 64 pixel logo and, optionally, a 2560 × 164 pixel background image. These are header-asset recommendations, not universal dimensions for images placed in page web parts.

Microsoft’s header guidance separates the wide logo shown in the header from the square thumbnail used wherever SharePoint needs a compact, square identity image.

Microsoft describes the thumbnail as square and required for the standard setup. The main logo can be rectangular and transparent. Treat the extended dimensions as layout-specific: do not substitute the 300 × 64 asset for the standard header unless you have selected the extended layout.
Why SharePoint needs two logo files
Wide logo for the header
The site logo occupies the header’s horizontal area, so a 192 × 64 image gives a 3:1 working shape. A transparent PNG or SVG can preserve a logo’s edges against the selected header color; use JPEG when a photographic or non-transparent asset is intentional.

Square thumbnail for compact surfaces
The thumbnail is a separate square file. It appears in search, on the site card and anywhere else SharePoint requires a square logo. Cropping the wide logo automatically can remove lettering or create excessive empty space, so create a deliberate square composition instead.
Microsoft’s support wording is explicit: “The Site logo will appear in the site header. The Site logo thumbnail image will appear in searches, on the site card, and anywhere else a square logo is needed.” See Microsoft’s site-information guidance.
Standard, communication-site and high-resolution guidance
Standard modern header
For the normal modern header, prepare the 192 × 64 main logo and 64 × 64 thumbnail listed in Microsoft’s header recommendations.
Communication-site note
Microsoft’s separate communication-site guidance says a rectangular logo should be 192 × 64 pixels and a square logo should be at least 64 × 64 pixels. It also says doubling those dimensions is best for high-resolution display. That is additional communication-site advice, not a replacement for the standard header table. If you work with a design system that exports at 2×, create 384 × 128 and 128 × 128 source files while preserving the same aspect ratios, then confirm that the uploaded files are accepted by your tenant.

Extended header
Selecting the extended layout changes the asset requirements. Use the 300 × 64 logo and supply the optional 2560 × 164 background image when you want a banner-style header. The background is a separate file; it is not a stretched version of the logo.
File formats, transparency and legibility
- PNG: a practical choice for transparent logos and crisp text.
- JPEG: suitable when transparency is unnecessary; export at high quality to avoid compression halos.
- SVG: useful for scalable artwork, but Microsoft explicitly disallows SVG on group-connected sites. Use PNG or JPEG for those sites.
Keep important lettering and symbols inside the visible artwork rather than at the extreme edge. Check the logo at the actual header height and at narrow browser widths. A file can meet the pixel recommendation and still be unreadable if its lettering is too fine or its contrast is poor.
How to upload the logo in modern SharePoint
- Sign in with a SharePoint account that has site-owner or designer permissions.
- Open the target site and select Settings (the gear icon).
- Choose Change the look, then open Header.
- Select the header layout: compact, standard or extended, where those options are available in your environment.
- In Display, add or change the Site logo thumbnail and the Site logo. For an extended header, add the extended background image if required.
- Review the preview, then select Save.

Permissions and group-connected site behavior
When the controls are missing
Site owners or designers need the appropriate permissions. If Change the look or the logo controls are absent, ask a SharePoint administrator to verify your role and whether tenant policy restricts customization.
Microsoft 365 group-connected team sites
A group-connected team site uses the associated Microsoft 365 group’s logo. Changing the site logo also changes that group logo. Plan the artwork with the group’s other surfaces in mind, and avoid SVG when the site is group-connected because Microsoft does not allow that format there.

Do not confuse header logos with page-image sizes
The dimensions above apply to site-header assets. Images inserted into modern SharePoint pages are responsive: their displayed size depends on the web part, column layout, placement and device. Microsoft’s image-sizing guidance does not define one pixel size that guarantees a fixed display size in every context. Choose page-image dimensions for the specific layout instead of reusing the header-logo files.
Asset-preparation checklist
- Create two intentional compositions: one wide header logo and one square thumbnail.
- Export the standard pair at the recommended dimensions, or use the extended pair only after selecting the extended layout.
- Use PNG or JPEG on a group-connected site; reserve SVG for site types where your tenant permits it.
- Test transparent artwork against the header color and test small lettering at the rendered header size.
- Keep an original, larger working file so you can export a sharper 2× version for high-resolution communication-site displays.
- Open the site on a narrow viewport after saving; responsive behavior can expose clipping or excessive padding that is not obvious on a wide monitor.
Troubleshooting common logo problems
The logo looks stretched or cropped
Check that the file matches the selected layout. A standard header expects the wide standard asset; an extended header has its own wider logo and optional background. Re-export the artwork with the correct aspect ratio and keep the mark inside a safe margin.
The thumbnail is blank or rejected
Confirm that you uploaded a separate square image and that it is a supported format. On a group-connected site, replace an SVG with PNG or JPEG. Save again, then allow a short period for SharePoint surfaces such as search and site cards to refresh.
There is no Header option
Verify that you are a site owner or designer and that an administrator has not disabled customization. Also check whether your government or sovereign cloud environment exposes the same header layouts as the commercial service.

The group logo changed unexpectedly
That is expected behavior for a Microsoft 365 group-connected team site: the site and associated group share the logo. Coordinate the change with the group owners before saving.
The logo is sharp on desktop but soft on high-density screens
Use the communication-site recommendation to provide a 2× source export while preserving the intended aspect ratio. Avoid enlarging a small, compressed JPEG; return to the original artwork and export a new file.
A page image does not fit even though the logo dimensions are correct
Header recommendations do not control page web parts. Review the page’s column and web-part placement and follow Microsoft’s responsive image-sizing guidance instead of changing the header files.

Is the 192 × 64 size a hard limit?
No. Microsoft presents it as a recommendation for the standard header. The important requirement is matching the chosen layout and keeping the artwork legible; the extended layout has its own recommended logo size.
Should I upload a background image for every header?
No. The 2560 × 164 background is an optional asset for the extended header. Standard and compact headers use the standard logo pair instead.
Why does a logo change take time to appear in search?
The header can update immediately while secondary surfaces such as search and site cards refresh separately. Recheck after SharePoint has had time to propagate the new thumbnail.
