“No Preview Available” is a symptom, not a single Windows or printer fault. First identify the operating system and app, then determine whether preview fails in one document or everywhere. Try the same file in another app or browser before changing drivers or deleting queued jobs.
Microsoft’s exact-match article concerns custom print applications built with Windows App print APIs on Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Its documented fix, update rollup KB3156418, is a legacy remedy and should not be installed as a general fix on current Windows versions.
Start with a five-minute scope check
- Record the platform and app. Note whether you are using Windows 11, another Windows release, macOS, Microsoft Edge, a PDF reader, Word, or a printer manufacturer’s utility. The wording can look similar even when the failing component is different.
- Try a second document. A damaged or unusual document can fail while ordinary files preview normally.
- Try another app. On Windows, print a simple page from Notepad or another basic application. On a Mac, Apple recommends trying another app such as TextEdit. If only one program fails, investigate that program before the printer.
- Separate preview from printing. Does the preview panel stay blank, or does the print job also fail? A preview-only problem points toward the app, browser, PDF component, or driver preview layer. Failure in several apps suggests the operating system’s print subsystem, connection, or driver.
- Check the selected printer. Confirm that the intended device is installed, online, and selected in the application’s print dialog. Do not assume the printer is defective until another app produces the same result.
These tests are diagnostic, not proof of a particular cause. They prevent a browser problem from being treated as a hardware failure and avoid deleting print jobs unnecessarily.
When only one browser or application cannot preview
Test the application’s print path
Print the same content from a different browser or application. If the alternate path previews correctly, update or repair the failing application, inspect its PDF or print settings, and check whether an extension or custom print component is involved. Keep the working application as a temporary way to produce the document while you troubleshoot the original one.

Microsoft Edge and PDF preview
Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance lists an unavailable built-in PDF viewer as one possible reason Edge cannot show a preview. Check the PDF viewer and other Edge print settings using the current instructions in Microsoft’s Edge print troubleshooting guide. The PDF viewer is a possible cause, not a diagnosis: confirm that the component is missing or unavailable and compare with another app before treating it as the fix.
Check document type and destination
Switch between a physical printer and a PDF destination if both are available. A failure only for one PDF, web page, or embedded document points toward that document’s rendering path. A failure for every document in the same app warrants repairing or reinstalling the app’s print or PDF component.
When every Windows application has a preview or print problem
Verify setup and communication first
Follow Microsoft’s current Windows printer connection and printing guide. Confirm the printer is installed, connected to the expected network or cable, and not paused or offline. On Windows 11, Microsoft directs users to the Get Help printer troubleshooter. Then install the current driver supplied for your exact printer model and Windows version.
Print a Windows test page
A test page helps separate Windows or driver faults from an individual application. Use the printer’s Windows properties to send a test page. If it prints but an application cannot preview, concentrate on the application or PDF path. If the test page also fails, continue with connection, driver, and spooler checks.

Restart the Print Spooler only when warranted
Microsoft’s app-printing guidance includes restarting the Print Spooler when earlier checks do not resolve the problem. Open the Windows Services management tool, locate Print Spooler, stop it, wait briefly, and start it again. Reopen the application and test a small document.
If jobs remain stuck, Microsoft describes stopping the spooler, clearing the queued spool files, and starting the service again in its Windows printing guidance. Clearing that folder removes pending print jobs. Save or cancel anything you still need before using this step, then submit a new test page rather than assuming an old queue entry will recover.
Update or reinstall the driver
Use the driver intended for your printer model and Windows edition, not a similar model’s package. If an update does not help, remove the printer and its driver through Windows’ printer settings, restart the computer, and install the current package according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Treat this as a later step because it changes the system print layer and can remove custom options.
Microsoft’s guide for printing problems in Word, Excel, and other apps also recommends checking application settings, printing a Windows test page, restarting the spooler, updating or reinstalling drivers, and restarting the app or PC. These are conditional troubleshooting steps, not a guarantee that every preview-only fault will be repaired.

The one legacy Microsoft issue that exactly matches the wording
Microsoft documents a specific “Preview not available” error in custom print applications that use Windows App print APIs. The affected systems are Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Do not generalize KB3156418 to Windows 10, Windows 11, macOS, browsers, or ordinary desktop applications. If your computer is not one of the listed legacy systems, use the platform-specific checks in this article instead. Installing an old update unrelated to your edition can create confusion without addressing the actual failing layer.
Mac: isolate the app and inspect printer software
Apple does not publish a universal fix for this exact wording. Its current Mac printing guidance recommends trying another application, such as TextEdit, and reviewing the printer’s software and driver information.
- Print a short text document from another app.
- If that succeeds, repair or update the original app or document path.
- If several apps fail, open the printer settings in macOS and review the selected printer, connection, and installed software.
- Follow Apple’s steps for your macOS version rather than applying Windows spooler, driver, or KB instructions.
A Mac preview failure that is limited to one application is not evidence that the printer needs replacement.

Manufacturer preview controls are optional layers
HP Windows driver preview
HP documents a Windows option named Show preview before printing. The checkbox appears only when HP Print Preview is installed; it is not a universal Windows setting. If you use an HP driver, open its printing preferences and check whether that component is present. If the option is absent, install the HP package that includes Print Preview only when it matches your printer and Windows version. See HP’s preview-a-print instructions.
HP and macOS
HP describes preview on Mac through the print dialog’s PDF menu and notes that available controls vary. Other manufacturers can expose different names or no separate preview at all. Do not infer that a missing HP checkbox, or an equivalent option, means the operating system preview is broken.

Protect queued work while troubleshooting
- Before clearing the spool directory, record or cancel jobs that must be printed later.
- Test with one short document after each major change so you know which step changed the behavior.
- Keep the printer powered and connected while reinstalling a driver, but avoid repeatedly resubmitting a large job that may be hidden in the queue.
- After a successful test page, return to the original document and application. A working test page does not prove that a damaged document or browser PDF path is healthy.
