To record a website demo people can watch, use a screen recorder: prepare a clean demo account, choose whether to capture a browser tab, window, or full screen, optionally enable narration or a camera, then record, review, and share the video. If you need a repeatable browser interaction for debugging rather than a presentation video, use Chrome DevTools Recorder instead. The two outputs serve different jobs.

Decide what “record your website” means

A website demo usually means a video that shows a person how a site or product works. A screen recorder captures what viewers see, and can also record narration and optionally a camera feed. The result is suited to onboarding, a product walkthrough, or an explanation you can share.

Developers sometimes mean something different: recording browser actions so they can replay a user flow, inspect steps, or profile performance. Chrome DevTools Recorder is designed for that diagnostic workflow. It records and replays flows, lets you edit or debug steps, can generate performance profiles, and can export flows as JSON or Puppeteer formats. Its artifact is a replayable flow, not a narrated presentation video.

Plan a short walkthrough before you record

Pick one outcome

Decide what the viewer should understand or be able to do by the end. For example, show how to create a report, invite a teammate, or find a particular setting. A focused outcome helps you leave unrelated features out and gives the recording a natural stopping point.

Write a small action sequence

List the handful of actions that demonstrate the outcome in order. Start on the page where the viewer should begin, and make sure the account and sample data are ready to use. A demo account and synthetic data are safer than real customer records or credentials. You do not need a formal script, but knowing the next step prevents long pauses and aimless navigation.

Keep the route easy to follow

Use clear page names and move at a pace that lets someone notice what changed after each action. If a step depends on a detail that is hard to see, pause briefly or explain it in narration. End after the promised outcome is visible instead of continuing into unrelated features.

Prepare the browser and choose the capture area

  1. Set up the starting page. Sign in to the prepared demo account and navigate to the first screen you intend to show.
  2. Close unrelated tabs and windows. Keep only what the walkthrough needs. This reduces visual clutter and the chance of revealing private information.
  3. Hide notifications. Silence desktop alerts and close chat or email windows that could appear over the page.
  4. Choose the smallest useful capture area. Capture the current browser tab for a demonstration contained in one tab. Choose a window or full screen if you must move between tabs, use other applications, or show a process outside the browser.
  5. Check what is visible. Look for personal details, account identifiers, browser bookmarks, or other information you would not want in a shared recording. Use test credentials and sample data where possible.

Loom’s Chrome extension documentation lists full-screen, window, and current-tab capture. Its desktop app documentation lists full-screen, window, and custom-size capture. The available choices can depend on the recording method and plan; check the current product interface before relying on a specific option.

Choose a screen recorder and set audio and camera options

For a shareable walkthrough with optional narration and presenter video, a screen recorder such as Loom fits the task. Loom documents recording through both its Chrome extension and desktop app. The extension can record the screen with the camera on or off, and lets you select a microphone or turn it off. The desktop app likewise documents camera and microphone choices. A separate USB microphone is optional, not a requirement.

Before recording, select the intended microphone input and speak a short test sentence. Check the recorder’s audio indicator or preview so you can catch a muted or incorrect input before making the full take. If you do not want narration, switch the microphone off. Enable the camera only if seeing the presenter helps explain the demo; it is not necessary for a clear browser walkthrough.

Some advanced Loom desktop options—including drawing, mouse-click highlighting, HD recording, and custom dimensions—are identified in its documentation as plan-dependent. Availability and plan limits can change, so verify the current plan details before promising those features to viewers or colleagues.

Record the website walkthrough

  1. Start at the prepared first step. Confirm the recorder is capturing the intended tab, window, or screen before beginning the explanation.
  2. Start recording, then follow your sequence. Move through the actions deliberately. Avoid rushing clicks, repeated backtracking, and long stretches where nothing changes.
  3. Explain context that the screen cannot show. Briefly say why a step matters or what a viewer should look for. Keep the narration tied to the action on screen.
  4. Pause or restart if something goes wrong. A short clean take is usually easier to understand than a long recording with detours. Do not continue if private information appears accidentally.
  5. Stop after the outcome is clear. End once the viewer has seen the result you planned to demonstrate.

Loom’s screen-recorder instructions describe selecting a screen and microphone, stopping the recording, uploading it, and receiving a sharing link. Exact controls and sharing behavior may vary in the current product UI.

  • Can a viewer follow the clicks and read the important page text?
  • Did the video start in the right place and reach the intended outcome?
  • Are there missed clicks, unnecessary waiting, or confusing detours?
  • Can you hear the narration clearly, with no unexpected silence or distracting sound?
  • Did any notification, credential, customer detail, or unrelated private information appear?

Trim a distracting beginning or ending if the editor supports it, or make a new take if the problem affects the explanation. Before sharing, check who will be able to view the video and whether the access setting is appropriate for its audience. Loom documents editing and sharing, but exact privacy controls and plan restrictions should be confirmed in your account’s current interface.

Protect private information and consider extension permissions

Keep the recording limited to the information the audience needs. Use synthetic data, close unrelated tabs, and hide notifications rather than assuming that a later edit will remove every accidental disclosure. Review the finished video before sharing, especially if the page contains account or customer information.

Loom’s official Chrome extension permissions documentation says the extension needs to run on web pages to support recording across the web and explains that Chrome’s disclosure means the extension can access site data. That is a vendor statement about the permission request, not an independent security assessment. Treat the permission as a real choice: install the extension only if it is appropriate for your browser and intended recording use, and avoid casually recording sensitive pages. The desktop app is another documented recording route; check its current availability and controls in Loom.

Use Chrome DevTools Recorder for replayable developer flows

If the goal is to reproduce a bug or inspect a sequence of browser interactions, open Chrome DevTools and use Recorder rather than making a viewer-facing video. Chrome documents opening Recorder from DevTools’ More tools menu or from the Command Menu. You can record and replay a user flow, edit or debug its steps, generate a performance profile, and export a flow in JSON or Puppeteer formats. Chrome’s Recorder documentation was last updated July 15, 2024, so check the current Chrome interface for any later changes.

  • 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.

  • 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

A recorded flow is useful when the browser actions themselves need to be repeatable or inspectable. It does not replace a narrated screen recording when your audience needs a visual explanation. Choose based on the output you need, not merely because both tools can record browser activity.

Or skip the browser setup: capture a clean still instead

A screenshot is not a demo video: it cannot show a sequence of actions or record narration. If a single clean still image is enough to illustrate a page, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can also use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

For a still image of a page, install Python’s requests package, set your API key, and run:

import requests

r = requests.get(
    "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
    params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
    timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page capture, element selection, device and viewport settings, PDF controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, wait conditions, custom headers and cookies, caching, async jobs, bulk capture, and other options. It accepts parameter names used by other screenshot APIs to ease switching. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free with no card, then paid plans from $5 for 3,000; all features are on every plan. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshoot common recording problems

The video has no narration

Check that the recorder selected the intended microphone and that the microphone is not switched off. Test the input before the next take and watch the recorder’s audio indicator. If the browser or operating system asked for microphone access, confirm the permission was granted.

The wrong screen or tab appears

Stop and select the intended capture source before restarting. Use a tab for a one-tab walkthrough; select a window or full screen only when the explanation crosses tabs or applications. Check the preview or source label rather than assuming the last-used selection is correct.

Text or controls are difficult to see

Review the video at its likely viewing size. Reduce unrelated content in the frame, keep the pointer near the control being discussed, and pause after important changes. If you use a custom-size or HD option, confirm that the capability is available in your current plan before recording around it.

A notification or sensitive detail appeared

Do not share the take until you have reviewed it. Re-record with notifications hidden and test data in place, or use the editor to remove the affected portion if the available editing controls are sufficient. If sensitive credentials or customer data were exposed, follow your organization’s incident and credential-handling procedures rather than relying on a video trim alone.

The browser extension requests broad page access

Loom’s documentation explains that its extension needs to run on web pages for recording across the web and that Chrome’s disclosure reflects access to site data. Decide whether that access is acceptable for the pages you intend to record; consider the documented desktop-app route if appropriate, and verify its present behavior in the product UI.

FAQ

Can I record a website without showing my face?

Yes. Loom documents camera-off recording in its extension and camera controls in its desktop app. Narration is also optional; select a microphone or turn it off.

Should I record the browser tab or the whole screen?

Use the tab when the demo stays in one browser tab. Use a window or full screen when the walkthrough needs other tabs or applications.

Can Chrome DevTools Recorder create a demo video?

It records browser user flows for replay and developer analysis, with editing, performance profiling, and export options. It is not the narrated presentation-video workflow described here.
