For browser automation, start with Playwright MCP if you need an official, documented way for an AI client to navigate and interact with web pages. For Chrome-specific debugging, inspect Chrome DevTools MCP; for hosted browser execution, evaluate Browserbase MCP Server. For developer workflows beyond browsers, consider MCP Inspector, MCP Git, GitHub’s MCP server, FastMCP, and MCP SDK entries. These are discovery leads, not endorsements: verify each project’s source, setup, permissions, and maintenance before connecting it.
Where to find MCP servers for browsers and developer work
Two directories provide useful starting points, but they organize and label projects differently:
- mcpHQ Awesome MCP Servers describes itself as a hand-curated, link-checked catalog with an interactive map and JSON API. It focuses on well-scoped, source-available servers and includes browser and developer-tool categories.
- MCP.Directory’s browser automation category displays browser-focused entries and marks them as official or community. Its listing count is live and should not be treated as a count of the entire MCP ecosystem.
- A separate Model Context Protocol developer-tools directory includes projects for repository operations, server development, and testing as well as browser work.
Directory categories and metadata are discovery aids. A curated or link-checked listing does not establish that every project is secure, actively maintained, or right for your environment; an official/community label is not a security audit.
Browser automation MCP servers to evaluate
Playwright MCP: general web interaction
The official Playwright MCP documentation describes a server that lets language models interact with web pages through structured accessibility snapshots. Its documented operations include navigation, clicks, typing, forms, screenshots, keyboard and mouse actions, tabs, network request inspection, route mocking, console access, and browser storage state. Documented browser options include Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge.
#1 Best Overall
This is a good starting candidate when an agent must understand page structure and perform interactions, or when a team wants one documented option spanning multiple browser engines. It is not automatically the right choice for every scraping, testing, or debugging task; compare the specific operations and execution model you need.
Chrome DevTools MCP: Chrome inspection and debugging
mcpHQ lists Chrome DevTools MCP as a Chrome control and inspection server using the DevTools protocol, while MCP.Directory describes it in terms of automation, debugging, and performance analysis. Treat those listings as pointers. Check the project’s own documentation for current setup, supported operations, permissions, and maintenance before installing.
Browser MCP: local Chrome automation
Directory descriptions identify Browser MCP with local Chrome automation. Local execution may matter if you need to work with a browser on your machine rather than a hosted browser, but confirm the current project owner, repository, security model, and login-state behavior at the project source.
Browserbase MCP Server: hosted browser automation
mcpHQ describes Browserbase MCP Server as cloud browser automation for navigation, scraping, and form filling. Compare the hosted execution model with local browser control, and review the provider’s documentation for authentication, service requirements, and data handling before sending pages or credentials through it.

Puppeteer MCP: headless Chrome automation
mcpHQ lists Puppeteer MCP as a Puppeteer-based headless Chrome automation option for scraping and testing. Confirm its current maintenance, installation process, and compatibility from the underlying project source.
Developer-tool MCP entries cover different jobs
“Developer tools” is a broad category, not a single workflow. The directories include examples such as MCP Inspector, MCP Git, the official MCP Registry, GitHub’s MCP server, FastMCP, and MCP SDK entries. Their presence indicates different kinds of work—inspecting servers, interacting with source control, developing servers, or using repository integrations—not interchangeable capabilities.
Before choosing one, write down the concrete action your agent needs to take. A browser server is not a substitute for a repository integration; a GitHub or Git-focused server is not a browser debugger. Verify the project’s documentation and repository rather than inferring features from a category label.
Set up Playwright MCP with an MCP client
The standard configuration in the official Playwright guide uses npx to run the npm package. Add this server entry to the MCP configuration used by your client:

- Find the MCP server configuration location and format for your client. The Playwright guide includes client guidance for VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Desktop, Cline, Goose, Kiro, Codex, and Copilot CLI; exact setup steps can vary by client and change over time.
- Add the JSON entry, preserving any other server entries already in the file.
- Start or reload the MCP server using your client’s current instructions, then check that the client reports the Playwright tools as available.
- Try a low-risk page and a simple navigation or interaction before using the server on authenticated or sensitive sites.
The @latest package tag requests the latest package at launch, so the version can change over time. If you need reproducible behavior, use the versioning approach supported by the current Playwright documentation and your client’s configuration, and validate upgrades in a test environment.
Choose a browser profile deliberately
Playwright MCP documents persistent mode by default, isolated sessions, and a browser-extension mode. Persistent profiles preserve login state and cookies. That can be useful for a workflow that needs an existing session, but it also means browser state can contain credentials or other sensitive data. Select the profile deliberately and consider who or what can access the stored state.
Treat arbitrary code execution as a high-risk capability
The Playwright guide documents an unsafe code execution tool for complex Playwright scripts and warns that it runs arbitrary JavaScript in the server process and is equivalent to remote code execution. Only enable it for trusted MCP clients. If a workflow only needs the documented browser interactions, do not enable a broader execution capability without a specific reason.
How to compare directory candidates
Use the same checklist for each candidate instead of choosing from its name or directory ranking:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Rank #4
- Task: Is the goal browser interaction, end-to-end testing, scraping, live debugging or performance analysis, or source-control work?
- Execution: Does it control a local browser, launch a headless local process, or use a remote/cloud browser?
- Interaction model: Does it use accessibility snapshots and element references, a browser protocol, scripted automation, or a provider API?
- Client and setup: Which MCP clients and transports are supported? What runtime, package or repository, and credentials are required?
- Trust and maintenance: Who owns the project? Is the repository active, and are license, releases, issue handling, permissions, and data flows clear?
- Impact: Can the server execute arbitrary code, use stored credentials, or make changes on remote sites? Can you limit its access to the task?
mcpHQ says it reviews entries and checks links; MCP.Directory labels entries official or community. Those details help with discovery, but neither tells you by itself whether a particular implementation is safe, maintained, or suitable. Read the underlying project documentation and repository, and review what the server can access before connecting it to an agent.
Screenshot API alternative for captures without browser setup
If your requirement is to obtain a page screenshot rather than let an AI agent control a browser, consider ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is an alternative to the browser-control servers above, not a replacement for their interactive automation or debugging workflows.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request can return an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common selection and setup mistakes
Choosing by directory label alone
Problem: A category or official/community badge appears to settle whether a server is right for production.
Fix: Follow the entry to its own repository and documentation. Check ownership, recent maintenance, installation, permissions, and data handling for the specific project and version you intend to run.
Expecting one browser server to do every job
Problem: A tool suited to page interaction is assumed to provide hosted sessions, specialized Chrome debugging, or repository operations.
Fix: Match the server to the task and execution model. For each candidate, verify the operations documented at its source rather than relying on a broad directory description.
Unexpected login state or shared cookies
Problem: A persistent Playwright profile reuses stored browser state when a clean session was expected, or an agent can access a logged-in session it should not use.
Fix: Choose between persistent, isolated, and extension modes according to the workflow. Review where the profile state lives and restrict access to trusted clients.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Client does not show the server’s tools
Problem: The configuration entry is present but the client does not expose Playwright tools.
Fix: Check that the JSON is valid, the configuration is in the location and format required by that client, and the server has been restarted or reloaded according to the client’s current instructions. Consult the Playwright guide and your client’s setup documentation for version-specific steps.
Unsafe code execution is enabled unnecessarily
Problem: A complex-script option grants more capability than routine browser interaction requires.
Fix: Leave the unsafe code execution tool disabled unless the task genuinely needs it and the client is trusted, given Playwright’s warning that it runs arbitrary JavaScript in the server process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an MCP directory listing mean a server is secure?
No. Listings and labels help locate projects but do not establish security or suitability. Review the project source, permissions, data handling, and maintenance.
Which server should I try first for structured web-page interaction?
Playwright MCP is a practical starting point because its official documentation describes accessibility-snapshot interaction and provides a standard npm-based configuration.
