Choose the output before choosing a tool. Use SingleFile when you need one portable HTML file containing a page and its referenced images, stylesheets, fonts and frames. Use HTTrack when you need a browsable local mirror of multiple pages and their assets. Neither approach guarantees every resource used by a modern application: files requested only after JavaScript runs, login steps or user interaction may not be discoverable by a static downloader.

Decide what “all resources” means

A page can depend on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, fonts, frames, media, API responses and state created by user actions. “Download the page” can therefore mean different things:

Goal Best fit Result Main limitation
One page in one file SingleFile A single HTML document you can open offline Runtime requests and interactive state may not be captured
One page with separate assets A page-requisite downloader An HTML file plus an asset directory with rewritten links Less convenient to share; exact command options vary by tool
Many linked pages HTTrack A recursively downloaded directory with local navigation HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript
Visual record rather than editable HTML ScreenshotNeo PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from a browser-rendered page It is a capture, not an offline HTML bundle

For an archive that must preserve links between many pages, use a mirror. For a self-contained artifact to email or store, use SingleFile. If the page changes after a click, scroll, consent choice or API call, first reproduce that state in a real browser and then save or capture it.

Save one complete page as a single HTML file with SingleFile

SingleFile is designed to bundle a page’s resources into one HTML file that can be displayed offline. Its official site lists support for Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari; browser-store availability and menu labels can change, so verify the current listing for your browser.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Basic procedure

  1. Install the SingleFile extension from the store for your browser.
  2. Open the page and wait until the content you need is visible.
  3. Scroll through the page if it lazy-loads images or other sections only when they enter the viewport.
  4. Complete any consent or sign-in step you are authorized to perform. The saved file reflects the state currently shown in the browser.
  5. Open the SingleFile extension and choose the command to save the current page. Select a local folder and keep the resulting .html file.
  6. Disconnect from the network and open the file in a browser to test it. Check images, fonts, embedded frames, internal links and interactive controls separately.

What the file can and cannot preserve

  • Referenced images, stylesheets, fonts and frames can be embedded so the document remains portable.
  • JavaScript code may be present, but a script that expects a live server, API, cookie, token or service worker can still fail offline.
  • Video, audio, maps, ads and other large or protected media may remain dependent on the network or on a license.
  • A page that loads content only after an interaction must be put into that state before saving; otherwise the absent content is not magically recovered later.

SingleFile is a good fit for a snapshot of an article, documentation page or rendered report. It is not a substitute for exporting application data or creating a reproducible database backup.

Mirror a site or section with HTTrack

HTTrack recursively downloads HTML, images and other files, preserves relative link structure, and supports resuming and updating a mirror. Its official homepage currently lists version 3.50-4 (09/25/2026). The Windows build is called WinHTTrack; the macOS, Linux, Unix and BSD build is WebHTTrack. Check the current download page for operating-system requirements before installing.

Mirror a same-host site

After installing HTTrack, a basic command-line mirror is:

httrack https://example.com/ --path mydir

The downloaded tree is placed under mydir. Open the generated local index in a browser and test representative pages, images, stylesheets and links. HTTrack can resume an interrupted transfer and update an existing mirror, which is useful for a recurring archive.

Include page requisites hosted elsewhere

Some pages store images, fonts or scripts on a CDN or another host. HTTrack’s guide gives this pattern:

httrack https://example.com/blog/ --near --path mydir

--near can fetch a whole external host reached from a single link. That may pull unrelated material, so add a narrow filter for the specific CDN paths you need and keep the starting URL scoped to the smallest useful section. A redirect from one host to another (for example, a non-www address to www) can also stop the default scope; start with the final URL or explicitly allow the destination host.

Make a post-processed single file

HTTrack’s --single-file mode runs after a mirror is complete. It embeds eligible stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts as data URIs. The guide documents a default 10 MB limit per asset. Files above that limit remain linked, as do audio, video and page-to-page links, so this mode does not turn a multi-page mirror into a universally self-contained document.

Control load and scope

  • Use modest transfer and connection settings; the guide describes a default transfer rate of about 100 KB/s.
  • Leave robots handling and built-in security limits enabled unless you are operating infrastructure you are expressly allowed to load heavily.
  • Keep an inventory of the hosts and paths included. External requisites can expand a crawl dramatically.
  • Retain HTTrack logs. They show missing files, denied requests and redirects that a visual inspection can overlook.

Why a static download misses “all” resources

HTTrack parses HTML and CSS; it does not execute JavaScript. If a script constructs an API or asset URL at runtime, a crawler may never see that URL. The same problem occurs with content that appears only after authentication, a click, infinite scrolling, a consent decision or a network request made after initial load.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black

  • The available storage capacity may vary.

When completeness matters, define the required state first:

  1. Load the page in a browser with the correct account, locale, timezone and viewport.
  2. Perform the interactions that reveal the content, including scrolling through lazy-loaded sections.
  3. Use the browser’s save tool or SingleFile for a one-page artifact, or capture the rendered state as a PDF/image.
  4. For a site archive, separately export data or use an application-supported backup for information that cannot be represented by static files.

Inspect the offline copy rather than assuming success from a zero exit code. Look for broken images, missing fonts, console errors, blank widgets and links that still point to the original host.

External hosts, redirects and URL scope

Resources commonly come from several origins: the page host, a CDN, an image service, an analytics domain and an API. A broad external-host rule can download far more than the page requires. Start with the page’s final URL, identify the hosts visible in the browser’s network panel, and allow only the paths needed for the archive. Be especially careful with query-string URLs that generate unique responses; they can create a very large mirror.

A local copy also changes URL behavior. Absolute links may still open the live site, forms may submit online, and scripts may reject a file:// origin. If local navigation requires HTTP semantics, serve the directory through a small local web server instead of double-clicking the file, while keeping the archive offline from the public network.

Permissions and responsible archiving

Download only material you are permitted to access and preserve. Respect copyright, terms of use, robots directives and account restrictions. Do not bypass authentication, CAPTCHAs, paywalls or other access controls. HTTrack’s documentation places responsibility for copying on the user and recommends respecting server limits; an archive should not create unnecessary load or expose private content.

Troubleshooting checklist

The saved page is blank or unstyled

  • Cause: CSS, fonts or scripts were not embedded, or the application requires a server.
  • Fix: Re-save after the page finishes loading, verify that lazy content is visible, inspect the saved file’s resource references, and test from a local HTTP server when file:// restrictions are involved.

Images are missing

  • Cause: Lazy loading, a CDN host outside the crawl scope, blocked hotlink requests or URLs generated by JavaScript.
  • Fix: Scroll through the page before using SingleFile; for HTTrack, include the required external host narrowly and review logs. Capture the rendered state if the URLs exist only after script execution.

Only the homepage was downloaded

  • Cause: The crawl scope excluded redirected or linked hosts, or links are generated dynamically.
  • Fix: Start from the final redirected host, set an explicit scope for approved hosts, and recognize that JavaScript-generated routes require a browser-based process.

HTTrack downloaded too much

  • Cause: --near reached an entire CDN or external site.
  • Fix: Replace the broad allowance with host-and-path filters, narrow the starting directory, stop the crawl, remove unwanted files and restart with a smaller scope.

The single-file result still makes network requests

  • Cause: Oversized assets, audio/video, live APIs, service workers or scripts that require an origin and server.
  • Fix: Treat the file as a snapshot, not a full application clone. Export the underlying data where supported or retain the required assets and a controlled local server.

Performance, reliability and storage planning

SingleFile is usually fastest for one already-rendered page because the browser has fetched the resources it can see. HTTrack is more predictable for repeated, multi-page work because it can resume and update, but crawl time and storage grow with page count, external hosts and duplicate query URLs. Keep transfer rates conservative, archive logs with each run, and test a sample of pages before committing to a large crawl.

For a durable archive, record the source URL, capture date, account or locale context, allowed hosts and tool version. Re-run the offline test after updates: a mirror can contain every requested file and still fail because a script expects a live endpoint or because a resource expired.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a clean visual record rather than an editable offline HTML bundle, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one GET request. It is not a replacement for SingleFile or HTTrack when you must browse links offline, but it avoids installing and automating a browser.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo can accept the cookie or consent banner and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is included on every plan; 1,000 screenshots per month are free without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Quick decision guide

  • Choose SingleFile for one self-contained HTML snapshot.
  • Choose HTTrack for a recursively browsable mirror, with explicit host filters.
  • Use a browser-rendered save or capture when content appears only after JavaScript or interaction.
  • Use ScreenshotNeo when a clean image or PDF is sufficient and you want an API or MCP workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I download a page’s HTML, CSS, images and JavaScript with one command?

A static downloader can retrieve resources referenced in the HTML and CSS, but no single command guarantees resources created later by JavaScript, authentication or user interaction. Choose SingleFile for one browser-rendered HTML file or HTTrack for a scoped site mirror.

Will HTTrack copy a React, Vue or other JavaScript application completely?

Not necessarily. HTTrack does not execute JavaScript, so routes and API URLs assembled at runtime can be missed. Capture the required state in a browser or use an application-supported export for dynamic data.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Why does an offline HTML file still contact the internet?

Large media, live APIs, service workers, absolute URLs and scripts requiring a server can remain external. Inspect the file and network requests; a static snapshot is not the same as an offline clone of the application.

Is HTTrack’s 10 MB limit the maximum size of a downloaded file?

No. The documented 10 MB default applies per eligible asset when HTTrack post-processes a completed mirror with its single-file mode. Larger assets remain linked, and audio, video and page links are not embedded by that option.
