Fastest path: in Android Studio, choose an Android Virtual Device (AVD) from the target-device menu, click Run, open your app in the emulator, then click the emulator toolbar’s Take Screenshot button and save the PNG. You can do the same with a USB-connected phone through Android Studio, the phone’s Power + Volume-down keys, or Android’s command-line tools.
This guide covers setup, launch, capture, file locations, device testing, command-line alternatives, failure recovery, and an API option when you need repeatable screenshots outside a browser or emulator.
Choose the right capture path
Your choice depends on whether you need a quick development image, a hardware check, or an automated file on your computer.
| Goal | Best path | Where the image goes |
|---|---|---|
| Fast UI iteration | Android Studio Emulator and Take Screenshot | A PNG saved through the screenshot dialog |
| Validate behavior on real hardware | USB debugging, Android Studio, or phone buttons | Your phone or a location you choose in Android Studio |
| Scripted emulator capture | adb emu screenrecord screenshot or Android CLI |
The destination directory or output file you specify |
| Capture a web page for documentation | ScreenshotNeo | PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF returned by one API request |
Prerequisites and host requirements
Android Studio includes the Android Emulator; you do not install the emulator as a separate product. You need an Android Studio project (or an APK you can install), and either an AVD or a connected Android phone.

Android’s emulator guide recommends a host with 16 GB RAM, a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or higher, macOS 12 or higher, Linux, or ChromeOS, plus 16 GB of disk space. These are recommendations, not a guarantee of identical performance. Higher API levels and larger virtual displays can require more resources. If the emulator is unusably slow, Android recommends considering a physical device.
- Keep enough disk space for the system image and AVD data.
- For a phone, use a data-capable USB cable and enable USB debugging.
- Install the API level that matches the behavior you need to test.
Launch the app in the Android Studio emulator
-
Create or select an AVD
Open Android Studio’s Device Manager, create an Android Virtual Device, and select a device profile and system image. An AVD is the virtual device configuration; it is not the app itself.
-
Start the project
Open the project, wait for Gradle sync to finish, then use the target-device menu in the main toolbar to select the AVD. Click Run. The first boot can take about a minute. Later starts may be faster when the emulator reuses a saved snapshot.
-
Wait for the app process
Let the emulator finish booting and wait for the app’s first screen. If Android Studio asks which run configuration to use, choose the application configuration for your module. To deploy code changes, click Run again or use Apply Changes when that action is available.

Open the app manually when needed
After installation, the app remains on the virtual device like any other Android app. You can launch it from the emulator’s app launcher without rebuilding.

Take and save a screenshot from the emulator
- Arrange the screen exactly as you want it captured. Dismiss transient menus, finish loading dynamic content, and set the orientation first.
- In the emulator window, click Take Screenshot in the toolbar.
- Review the image in the screenshot dialog. Use Recapture if the app changed while the dialog opened.
- Use the dialog’s editing or copying controls if you need a quick annotation or clipboard image.
- Choose Save, select a folder, and change the timestamp-based default filename if required. The emulator saves a PNG.
The emulator screenshot process and its editing controls are documented by Android at Take screenshots.
Capture from Android Studio’s Screenshot Editor
This route works with either an emulator or a connected phone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Run the app on the selected device.
- Open View > Tool Windows > Logcat.
- Select the device and the app process.
- Click Screen Capture.
- In Screenshot Editor, recapture if necessary, rotate the image, optionally add a device frame, and save to the location you choose.
For a physical device, USB debugging must be enabled and the phone must authorize the computer. Android’s instructions are at Take a screenshot.
Use a physical Android phone
Hardware buttons
On many Android devices, pressing Power and Volume-down together captures the screen. The exact animation, notification, and storage location vary by manufacturer. This method is useful when the purpose is to document real hardware rather than an emulator skin.
Run from Android Studio
- Enable Developer options and USB debugging on the phone.
- Connect the phone and accept the computer-authorization prompt.
- Run
adb devicesin a terminal and confirm the device appears with andevicestatus. - In Android Studio’s target-device menu, select the phone and click Run.
- Capture through Logcat’s Screen Capture action, or use the phone buttons.
Follow the platform-specific setup details in Run apps on a hardware device. Android recommends testing on a real device as well as the emulator before release because physical hardware exposes differences in Android versions, screen sizes, performance, permissions, and manufacturer behavior.

screenrecord screenshot [destination-directory]
adb emu screenrecord screenshot [destination-directory]
Run the command against the emulator you intend to capture. Use an explicit destination directory so an automated job can find the resulting PNG.
Android CLI
The Android CLI can capture a PNG from a connected device or emulator:
android screen capture --output=screen.png
The CLI can also annotate a capture with numbered boxes around UI elements, which is useful for test notes and bug reports. See the command reference at android screen capture.
Make captures reliable and repeatable
Control state before capture
- Use a known account, locale, timezone, orientation, and network condition.
- Wait for a stable screen rather than capturing during a transition or skeleton-loader state.
- Hide sensitive notifications and personal data.
- Use the same AVD profile and API level when comparing builds.
Choose the correct image boundary
An emulator screenshot includes the virtual device display, while Screenshot Editor can optionally add a frame. A phone-button screenshot reflects the phone’s actual display and may include system bars. Decide whether your documentation needs the app canvas only or the complete device context before collecting a batch.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep naming and storage predictable
Rename files from the timestamp default to a convention such as checkout-api35-dark.webp or login-pixel7-light.png. Store the API level, device profile, orientation, and build identifier in adjacent test metadata when screenshots are used as release evidence.
Troubleshooting
The AVD does not appear in the target-device menu
Open Device Manager and verify that the AVD has a complete system image. If it is still absent, finish SDK installation and restart Android Studio. A project can run only when its selected device image is installed and compatible with the project’s minimum requirements.

The emulator is extremely slow or fails during boot
Check available RAM and disk space against Android’s 16 GB recommendations, close competing virtual machines, and try a smaller device profile or API image. A cold boot can take longer than a snapshot resume. If the host cannot run the emulator smoothly, move the test to a physical device.
Run installs the app but the screenshot shows the launcher
Wait for installation and process startup, then open the app from the emulator launcher. Confirm Android Studio’s run configuration points to the application module rather than a test configuration.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Take Screenshot is unavailable or captures the wrong display
Bring the emulator window to the foreground, select the intended AVD, and wait until the display is fully booted. For a phone, use Logcat’s device and process selectors; if the device is unauthorized, unlock it and accept the USB debugging prompt.
adb devices lists “unauthorized” or nothing
Reconnect the cable, enable USB debugging, unlock the phone, and approve the RSA prompt. Try another USB port or cable if the device still does not enumerate. On systems that require it, install the manufacturer’s USB driver.
The command-line capture cannot find a destination
Create the destination directory first and use an absolute path. Make sure the command is targeting the running emulator or connected device, not a disconnected ADB session.
The screenshot is blank, stale, or missing app content
Wait for network-backed content to finish, dismiss permission or consent dialogs, and recapture. A blank screen can indicate an app startup failure rather than a screenshot failure; inspect Logcat and fix the underlying process error.

If what you really need is a repeatable screenshot of a web URL—not an Android app running in an emulator—ScreenshotNeo returns a clean image or PDF from one request. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed.

FAQ
Do I need a physical Android phone to take a screenshot?
No. Android Studio’s included emulator can launch the app and save a PNG. A phone is valuable for validating behavior on actual hardware before release.
Can I capture only one view instead of the whole emulator display?
The built-in Android Studio workflow captures the device screen. For app-level image output, add an in-app test or automation step that exports the specific view; the emulator and Android Studio capture commands described here operate at the screen level.
Which method is best for a release bug report?
Use Screenshot Editor or the emulator capture dialog so you can recapture, rotate, optionally frame the image, and save it with a descriptive filename. Include the device profile and API level in the report.
The Bottom Line
For most developers, use the Android Studio emulator: select an AVD, click Run, then choose Take Screenshot. Use Logcat capture or phone buttons for hardware checks, and the documented CLI commands when a script must produce PNG files.
