To convert a document or webpage open in Microsoft Edge to PDF, open Edge’s print dialog, choose the PDF destination supplied by your operating system, and save the file. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS, adjust the preview, then save. The exact destination label varies by operating system and printer interface.
This guide covers browser-rendered webpages and web apps, original Word files, layout settings, failed previews, and a way to automate clean webpage captures.
First identify what “Edge document” means
There are two different jobs:
- A webpage or web-app document: print the rendered page from Edge and save the print output as a PDF.
- An original file such as a Word document: export it from the authoring application when possible. That preserves the source document’s intended structure better than printing a browser view.
Edge’s built-in PDF reader can view and print an existing PDF, but it does not edit PDF contents. For editing, Microsoft recommends converting the PDF to an editable format such as DOCX in desktop Word. See Microsoft’s PDF reader guidance.
Convert a webpage or web-app document in Edge
- Open the page or web-app document in Microsoft Edge and wait until its content has loaded.
- Open Settings and more (…) > Print, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. Microsoft documents this workflow in Print in Microsoft Edge.
- Inspect the print preview. Select the PDF-saving destination offered by your device, such as a system “Save as PDF” option. The name and location differ between Windows, macOS, and managed computers.
- Set the output options before saving. Use the controls available in your dialog for orientation, paper size, page range, margins, scale, headers and footers, and background graphics.
- Choose a filename and folder, then save. Open the resulting PDF and check every page before sharing it.
Choose print settings that match the document

Microsoft notes that including webpage background graphics can help when the preview or output does not resemble the page. Always use the preview as the final authority for pagination and appearance.

Print only part of a webpage
If you need only a section, select the relevant content on the page, open the selection’s context menu, and use the print command when Edge offers it. The option is site- and page-dependent. If it is unavailable, copy the content into a document editor and export that document, or print the full page and remove unwanted pages afterward.
Use Immersive Reader for a simpler copy
For supported sites, open the page in Immersive Reader before printing. It can remove navigation and other page styling, producing a plainer document. Microsoft says Immersive Reader is not available for every site, so treat it as an optional workaround rather than a guaranteed conversion mode.
Convert an original Word document on a Mac
If the “Edge document” is actually a Word file opened for viewing, use Word’s export path instead of printing the browser view:
- Open the file in Word for Mac.
- Select File > Save As.
- Choose PDF as the file format.
- Select Export.
- Give the PDF a different filename if you want to keep the editable Word document alongside it.
These steps are documented in Microsoft’s Save or convert to PDF on your Mac article. Exporting from Word is preferable when you need Word’s headings, tables, bookmarks, or document pagination rather than the appearance of a browser page.

- Open the saved file in a PDF reader and move through every page.
- Look for headings stranded at the bottom of a page, clipped tables, missing images, and unexpected blank pages.
- Check that links, page numbers, and headers or footers are appropriate for the audience.
- Verify that the filename and save location are correct before deleting or overwriting the source.
- If the page depends on scrolling or lazy-loaded content, wait for the content to appear before opening Print.
Troubleshoot Edge PDF conversion
The print preview is blank or never appears
Try printing another webpage or document. If other pages also fail, retry Edge and restart the browser. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance lists a missing built-in PDF viewer as one possible cause of failed print preview; consult Troubleshoot print issues in Microsoft Edge.

The PDF is missing colors, images, or page backgrounds
Return to Print and enable Background graphics if that control is available. Wait for images to finish loading, then reopen the preview. Some pages intentionally suppress backgrounds in print styles, so the printed result may never exactly match the screen.
Text or tables are cut off
Try landscape orientation, a larger paper size, smaller margins, or a modestly reduced scale. Check several pages after every change because fixing one wide table can make ordinary text too small.
The output contains menus, cookie notices, or chat widgets
Dismiss overlays before printing. If the site supports Immersive Reader, use it for a cleaner layout. Otherwise, print a selected section or copy the content into an editor and export from there.

Only some pages are needed
Enter the required page range in the print dialog. If pagination changes after adjusting scale or margins, recheck the range in preview before saving.
The PDF opens but cannot be edited
That is expected for a PDF created from print output. Edge’s reader is for viewing and printing, not editing. Convert the PDF to DOCX in desktop Word or use an appropriate PDF editor when you need to change its contents.

Can I convert an existing PDF in Edge to another PDF?
You can print an existing PDF to a new PDF, but that usually adds no useful information and may change quality or metadata. Use the original source or a PDF editor when possible.
Why does my saved PDF have a different number of pages than the webpage?
Print pagination depends on paper size, margins, scale, orientation, fonts, and the page’s print stylesheet. Adjust those settings in preview rather than relying on the screen’s scroll length.
Does printing from Edge preserve interactive controls?
No. A PDF records the rendered print result. Forms, menus, animations, and other interactive behavior may be absent or represented only by their visible state.
