A simulator often uses the Mac’s proxy settings instead. HTTPS decryption will not work unless the iOS client trusts the certificate, and certificate pinning can prevent inspection even when the proxy is configured correctly.
Before you start
This guide uses Fiddler Everywhere for the main procedure. The iPhone or iPad and the host computer must be able to communicate on the same local network, and the computer’s Fiddler listening port must be reachable from the device. You will need the host computer’s local IP address. The documented iOS setup uses port 8866.
- Fiddler Everywhere installed and open on the host computer.
- An iPhone or iPad connected to the same local network as the host.
- Permission to install and trust a test certificate on the iOS device.
- A test website or app that uses the system proxy and does not block interception with certificate pinning.
Use this on a device and network you are authorized to inspect. HTTPS interception lets Fiddler read and re-encrypt traffic through its own root certificate; do not use it to capture other people’s traffic or handle sensitive credentials unnecessarily.
Capture iPhone or iPad traffic with Fiddler Everywhere
1. Enable HTTPS capture and remote connections
- Open Fiddler Everywhere on the host computer.
- Go to Settings > HTTPS and turn on Capture HTTPS traffic.
- Go to Settings > Connections and turn on Allow remote devices to connect.
- Find the host computer’s local IP address and confirm that the device can reach the host on port
8866. If a firewall is active, it must allow the connection.
2. Install Fiddler’s root certificate on iOS
- On the iPhone or iPad, open Safari and visit
http://<fiddler-host-IP>:8866, replacing<fiddler-host-IP>with the host computer’s local IP address. - Download the Fiddler CA certificate from the page.
- Open iOS Settings > General > Profile Downloaded, select the Fiddler profile, and install it. If no “Profile Downloaded” item appears, locate the downloaded profile through Settings or retry the download in Safari.
- On iOS 10.3 and later, go to Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings and enable full trust for Fiddler Root Certificate Authority.
Installing the profile and enabling full trust are separate steps. A certificate can appear installed while HTTPS requests still fail to decrypt because full trust has not been enabled. Fiddler’s HTTPS settings documentation describes the root CA as necessary to capture and decrypt HTTPS traffic.

3. Set the iOS Wi-Fi proxy
- On iOS, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the information button for the connected network.
- Scroll to Configure Proxy, choose Manual, and enter the host computer’s local IP address and port
8866. - Save the setting, return to Fiddler, and generate traffic from Safari or another client that honors the system proxy.
Look for the resulting sessions in Fiddler’s Live Traffic grid. If the device cannot load pages after you set the proxy, check the host address, port, network connection, firewall and remote-device setting before troubleshooting certificates.
4. Restore the iPhone’s normal connection
When testing is finished, return to the Wi-Fi network’s Configure Proxy setting and select Off (or restore the proxy setting that was in place before the test). Leaving a manual proxy configured can send later browsing attempts to a computer that is no longer running Fiddler.
What Fiddler is doing to HTTPS
For ordinary HTTPS inspection, Fiddler acts as an intercepting proxy. The iOS client must trust Fiddler’s root CA so Fiddler can present certificates the client will accept for inspected sites. The proxy setting routes the device’s requests through Fiddler; the trusted CA enables decryption. Neither step substitutes for the other.

This arrangement does not guarantee that every app’s traffic can be decrypted. An app may not use the system proxy, may reject user-installed certificate authorities, or may use certificate pinning. A correctly configured proxy and trusted CA cannot override those app-level checks.

The simulator path differs from a physical device: iOS simulators generally detect macOS proxy settings, so a manual Wi-Fi proxy may not be needed. Some simulators do not detect proxy-setting changes dynamically. The official Fiddler guide recommends enabling system capture before starting the simulator and restarting it if needed.
Download and trust the certificate in the simulator
- With the simulator open, visit
http://ipv4.fiddler:8866in its browser to download the certificate. - Install the certificate. If that route does not work for your simulator, in Fiddler open Settings > HTTPS > Advanced Settings and choose Export Fiddler CA (DER/Binary format), then drag the exported file into the simulator.
- In the simulator, install it under Settings > General > Device Management, then enable trust under Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings.
- Generate test traffic and inspect the sessions in Fiddler’s Live Traffic grid.
Simulator behavior varies by simulator version, so if its traffic does not appear, restart it after enabling system capture and verify that the certificate is both installed and trusted.

Fiddler Everywhere and Fiddler Classic are not the same setup
Fiddler Classic has a different desktop interface and certificate workflow. Its documented sequence uses Tools > Options > HTTPS, the documented certificate generator, and the options Capturing HTTPS Connects and Decrypt HTTPS traffic. On iOS 10.3 and later, the device must trust the DO_NOT_TRUST_FiddlerRoot certificate. Do not follow Everywhere’s settings paths or assume its certificate name applies to Classic.
The available Classic guidance also differs in what it establishes about remote-device setup, simulator handling and Apple-domain bypass behavior. Confirm the relevant behavior in the documentation for the specific Fiddler edition and host operating system you use rather than assuming that an Everywhere instruction carries over unchanged.
Troubleshoot missing or undecryptable traffic
No sessions appear in Fiddler
- Check reachability: confirm the iPhone and host are on the same local network, the host IP is current, port
8866is reachable, and the host firewall permits the connection. - Check Fiddler’s remote setting: verify Settings > Connections > Allow remote devices to connect is enabled in Fiddler Everywhere.
- Check the proxy target: on a physical device, confirm the Wi-Fi proxy is set to Manual with the correct host IP and listening port.
- Check the client: generate a request in Safari or a client known to honor the system proxy. An app that bypasses the system proxy may not send its traffic through Fiddler.
HTTP appears, but HTTPS does not decrypt
- Verify that the Fiddler CA profile is installed on the device.
- On iOS 10.3 and later, verify full trust is enabled in Settings > General > About > Certificate Trust Settings.
- If only one app fails while Safari works, the app may reject user-installed CAs or use certificate pinning. The Fiddler iOS guide specifically documents pinning for some Apple services; it does not establish that every app can be intercepted.
Apple services fail during inspection
Apple services such as the App Store and iTunes use certificate pinning and may fail their TLS handshake through Fiddler. Telerik documents automatic macOS bypasses for *.apple.com, *.itunes.com and *mzstatic.com. On other operating systems, manual bypass entries may be required. Bypassing a domain means its traffic is not decrypted through the same inspection path, so use a bypass only when needed and follow the guidance for your host platform.

The simulator ignores a changed proxy or cannot install the certificate
Enable system capture before launching the simulator, then restart it if it did not pick up the macOS proxy change. For certificate installation, try the simulator download address http://ipv4.fiddler:8866; if necessary, export the CA in DER/Binary format from Fiddler’s Advanced Settings and drag it into the simulator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I capture HTTPS traffic without installing Fiddler’s certificate?
You may be able to route connections through a proxy, but Fiddler cannot decrypt ordinary HTTPS sessions on the iOS device without the Fiddler root CA being installed and trusted.
Does this setup work for every iOS app?
No. Apps can bypass the system proxy, reject user-installed certificate authorities, or use certificate pinning, any of which can prevent interception.
What does a certificate bypass change?
A bypass avoids interception for the matching host; use it only for the domains and test cases that require it, since those sessions will not be decrypted through Fiddler.
