The best first Go project is a small command-line program you can finish in a day, such as a word counter, unit converter, expense tracker, or file organizer. Build it with the standard library, then progress to a reusable module, JSON processing, and finally a small REST API. At every stage, keep the scope bounded and add tests before introducing another major concept.
Set up Go and your edit–run loop
The official getting-started tutorial lists three prerequisites: Go, a text editor, and a command terminal. Create a directory for each project, initialize a module, and run the program from that directory.
mkdir wordcount
cd wordcount
go mod init example.com/wordcount
Create main.go:
package main
import "fmt"
func main() {
fmt.Println("Hello, Go")
}
Run it with go run .. When it works, compile a binary with go build. This edit–run–read-the-error cycle is the foundation for every later project. The official learning path also includes an interactive Tour of Go with exercises; its examples are intended as starting points for experimentation. Go by Example is described by the Go project as “a hands-on introduction to Go using annotated example programs.”
A progression that keeps difficulty under control
| Stage | Project | Interface | Core concepts | Dependencies and scope risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hello-world variant | CLI | packages, functions, variables, errors | Standard library only; very low |
| 2 | Word counter, converter, expense tracker, or file organizer | CLI and files | slices, maps, validation, loops, file I/O | Standard library only; low |
| 3 | Reusable library plus caller | Package API | modules, imports, returned errors, slices and maps | Two local modules; low to medium |
| 4 | JSON utility or local data service | Files or local HTTP | encoding/json, structs, marshaling, status handling |
Usually standard library; medium |
| 5 | Small REST API | HTTP | routing, request validation, JSON responses, tests | Standard library or Gin; medium to high |
| 6 | Quality pass | Automated checks | unit tests, fuzzing, vulnerability checking | Tools are official Go options; scope stays bounded |
Use the comparison axes that matter for a first project: interface, concepts practiced, dependency load, testability, and scope risk. A good next project adds one or two new concepts rather than changing everything at once.
#1 Best Overall
Project 1: a word counter that teaches the essentials
Start with a program that accepts text from standard input and reports words, lines, and bytes. It exercises functions, slices, maps, loops, and error handling without a framework.
package main
import (
"bufio"
"fmt"
"io"
"os"
"strings"
)
type counts struct {
Lines int
Words int
Bytes int
}
func count(r io.Reader) (counts, error) {
scanner := bufio.NewScanner(r)
var out counts
for scanner.Scan() {
line := scanner.Text()
out.Lines++
out.Words += len(strings.Fields(line))
out.Bytes += len(line) + 1
}
if err := scanner.Err(); err != nil {
return counts{}, err
}
return out, nil
}
func main() {
result, err := count(os.Stdin)
if err != nil {
fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, "read input:", err)
os.Exit(1)
}
fmt.Printf("lines=%d words=%d bytes=%dn", result.Lines, result.Words, result.Bytes)
}
Try printf 'Go is smallnGo is fastn' | go run .. Define “done” before adding features:
- It handles empty input and multiple lines.
- It returns a non-zero exit status when reading fails.
- A README explains installation, usage, and one example.
- Tests cover normal input, empty input, and scanner errors where practical.
Natural extensions are a filename argument, a -json flag, or counts grouped by file. Do not add a database, web UI, and concurrency in the same iteration.
Other small command-line projects
Unit converter
Parse a number and a unit, validate unsupported units, and return a formatted result. Keep conversion factors in a map so adding a unit does not require another long conditional. Test rounding and invalid input.
Expense tracker
Represent each expense with a struct containing date, description, and amount. Store records in a slice, calculate totals, and optionally save JSON to a local file. Validate negative or malformed amounts before changing the slice.
File organizer
Read a directory, group files by extension, and offer a dry-run mode before renaming or moving anything. Handle permission errors and name collisions explicitly. A dry run is a useful safety boundary for a program that changes the filesystem.
Project 2: split a library from its caller
The official modules tutorial uses a two-module sequence: create a reusable library, create a caller application, import the library, return and handle errors, and work with slices and maps. Reproduce that shape with a package such as prices or textstats.
- Create
statsand rungo mod init example.com/stats. - Export a small API, for example
func Average([]float64) (float64, error). Return an error for an empty slice instead of silently returning zero. - Create a separate
reportdirectory and rungo mod init example.com/report. - Import
example.com/stats. During local development, add areplace example.com/stats => ../statsdirective to the caller’sgo.mod. - Write tests for both the library and caller, then remove the replace directive when the library is available from its intended module location.
This project teaches package boundaries and versioned dependencies without introducing a web framework. Keep the exported API small; changing it later is part of the exercise.

Project 3: JSON utility or local data service
Go’s official tutorial catalog includes a “Working with JSON” tutorial. Build a utility that reads a JSON file of tasks, filters by completion, and writes the result. Define structs with JSON tags, check decoding errors, and use an atomic write pattern (write a temporary file, then rename it) when replacing the original.
type Task struct {
ID int `json:"id"`
Text string `json:"text"`
Done bool `json:"done"`
}
Useful milestones are: decode one object, decode an array, validate required fields, produce useful errors with the filename, and add a --done filter. A local HTTP endpoint can be a later extension, not a prerequisite.
Project 4: a small REST API
Only move to HTTP after the command-line and module projects feel routine. The official catalog includes “Developing a RESTful web service with Go and the Gin Web Framework.” You can first implement a narrow API with the standard library, then compare what a framework changes.
- Choose one resource, such as tasks; implement
GET /tasksandPOST /tasksonly. - Decode JSON with a size limit, reject unknown or missing fields when appropriate, and return status codes consistently.
- Keep storage in memory for the first version. Persistence, authentication, pagination, and deployment are separate milestones.
- Use
httptestto test handlers without opening a real port.
The definition of done is a runnable server, documented curl examples, validation tests, and one deliberate extension such as filtering or a health endpoint. Adding Gin before you understand handlers, errors, and JSON usually increases dependency and scope risk.

Tests, fuzzing, and vulnerability checks
Add a test file beside each package and run go test ./... after every meaningful change. Table-driven tests make it easy to cover valid, empty, boundary, and invalid cases. Once a parser or HTTP handler has stable expected behavior, add a fuzz test to explore unexpected inputs. As the project gains dependencies or accepts untrusted data, use the official vulnerability-checking tutorial and govulncheck to identify known issues in the code and its dependencies. These checks improve a project; they do not require turning a beginner exercise into a production platform.
Make project documentation concrete
A useful README states the Go version you used, the module path, commands to run and test, input/output examples, limitations, and the next small extension. If a project has a browser dashboard or API documentation, capture a clean example image for the README. You can do that manually in a browser, or use ScreenshotNeo, a website screenshot API and MCP server.
Or skip the browser setup
One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The service accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The same endpoint also supports full-page and element captures, device presets, retina scale, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocking rules, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.

go: cannot find main module
Run the command from the directory containing go.mod, or initialize the module with go mod init. Do not run a multi-module example from its parent directory unless you have deliberately configured a workspace.
undefined or import errors
Check capitalization: exported identifiers begin with an uppercase letter. Confirm the import path matches the module path in go.mod, then run go mod tidy.
JSON fails to decode
Print or log the wrapped error, verify the input is valid JSON, and compare field names with your struct tags. Distinguish an absent field from a field containing a zero value when that difference matters.

How to choose your next project
- If syntax and errors are still unfamiliar, repeat a CLI project with one extension.
- If packages and imports are unclear, build the library-plus-caller pair.
- If structs and file I/O are comfortable, add JSON and validation.
- If tests pass reliably, build the smallest HTTP API and keep persistence out until the handler behavior is solid.
- When inputs become less predictable, add fuzzing and vulnerability checks before adding features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should my first Go project use a web framework?
Usually no. A standard-library CLI exposes Go’s functions, collections, packages, and errors with less dependency and scope risk. Add a framework after you can test a small handler.
How large should a beginner project be?
One clear behavior, a README, tests for normal and invalid cases, and one small extension is enough. Stop before authentication, deployment, and multiple storage systems turn it into a different project.
When should I learn concurrency?
After you can write and test sequential code comfortably. Introduce one goroutine or channel for a measured need, then use the race detector to check shared-state assumptions.
The Bottom Line
Build in layers: finish a tiny CLI, separate a reusable module, process JSON, then expose one tested HTTP resource. Each project should add only a small set of Go concepts while keeping dependencies and scope visible.
