RFC 8259 describes this directly: “A JSON parser transforms a JSON text into another representation.” The result might be a JavaScript object, a Python dictionary, a map, a custom tree, or another structure chosen by the language and library.
What a parser receives
JSON is a lightweight, text-based, language-independent format. A parser receives characters, usually from a file, HTTP response, message queue, command-line argument, or database field. The input remains text until parsing succeeds.
A JSON text consists of one serialized value, with permitted whitespace around it. The value can be an object, array, string, number, the literal true, the literal false, or null. The grammar is defined by RFC 8259; it does not prescribe one universal algorithm or memory layout.
Structural characters
Six characters tell the parser how values are arranged:

{and}delimit an object.[and]delimit an array.:separates an object name from its value.,separates neighboring members or array elements.
Whitespace may appear between tokens where the grammar permits it. JSON names must be strings enclosed in double quotation marks.
A worked example
Consider:
{"name":"Ada","active":true}- The parser sees
{and starts an object. - It reads the string
"name"as a member name. - It requires
:, then reads"Ada"as that member’s string value. - It requires
,before another member. - It reads
"active", the colon, and the literaltrue. - It sees
}, confirms the object is complete, and exposes the resulting representation to the application.
In JavaScript this commonly becomes an object; in Python it commonly becomes a dictionary. Those are library choices, not requirements of the JSON standard.
The three conceptual stages
Implementations differ internally, but a reliable mental model has three stages.
1. Consume the input
The implementation obtains characters or bytes and decodes them according to the API’s rules. A network client may first decode an HTTP body; a file API may read bytes from disk. Encoding and transport errors can occur before JSON syntax is considered.

2. Recognize tokens and grammar
The parser identifies strings, numbers, literals, delimiters, and whitespace, then checks whether they occur in a legal order. It validates quotation marks, escapes, commas, colons, brackets, and braces. A missing comma, an unquoted name, or an uppercase True is a syntax error in standard JSON.
3. Build or expose a representation
As valid values are recognized, the parser creates or exposes structures the host program can inspect. An object may become a map-like value; an array may become a list; strings and booleans remain corresponding scalar values. Some libraries build a complete tree, while others expose events or incremental values. RFC 8259 specifies the transformation, not a required data structure or algorithm.

What each JSON value means

What JSON.parse does in JavaScript
JSON.parse(text) accepts a JavaScript string containing JSON and returns the corresponding JavaScript value. For example:

console.log(data.name); // Ada
console.log(data.active); // trueIf the text violates JSON syntax, JavaScript throws a SyntaxError. Parsing does not fetch a URL, validate a business schema, or guarantee that required fields have useful values. Those are separate application steps.

Transforming values with a reviver
JavaScript also permits an optional reviver function:

);The reviver changes values after they are parsed; it does not make invalid JSON valid.
Python’s equivalent
Python’s standard library provides json.loads for text and json.load for a file-like object:

print(data["active"])Python maps JSON objects to dictionaries, arrays to lists, strings to strings, booleans to bool, null to None, and numbers to numeric types according to its decoder rules. The Python 3.12 documentation warns that malicious JSON can consume considerable CPU and memory.

Why malformed input is rejected
Strict parsing prevents an ambiguous text from silently becoming unexpected data. Common failures include:
- Single quotes:
{'name':'Ada'}is not standard JSON. - Trailing commas:
{"a":1,}is rejected by strict parsers. - Comments: JSON has no comment syntax.
- Unquoted names:
{name:"Ada"}is invalid. - Wrong literal case: use
true,false, andnull. - Invalid escapes or unterminated strings.
- Unbalanced brackets or braces.
Error messages usually include a position, line, or column. Treat that location as the point where the parser detected a problem; the actual mistake may be a few characters earlier.
Duplicate names and ordering
RFC 8259 says object names SHOULD be unique. Duplicate names create interoperability problems: one implementation may keep the first value, another the last, another may report every pair, and another may reject the input. Do not depend on duplicate-key behavior.
Likewise, software differs in whether it exposes object member order. Arrays are ordered; object ordering should not be used as a data contract unless a particular API explicitly documents that guarantee.
Limits, numbers, and resource use
Conforming parsers must accept texts that conform to the grammar, but implementations may impose limits. Check the documentation for maximum input size, nesting depth, string length, numeric range and precision, and permitted character handling. A very large or deeply nested document can exhaust memory or CPU even when its syntax is valid.
JSON numbers do not require every language to use the same numeric type. Values outside a runtime’s exact integer range can be rounded, rejected, or represented with a decimal or big-number type. If exact financial or identifier values matter, select a decoder and data model that preserve them; do not assume all parsers behave alike.

Security: never replace parsing with eval
Do not parse untrusted JSON with JavaScript eval, Python eval, or an equivalent execution function. RFC 8259 section 9 warns that eval-like parsing can execute code along with data declarations. Use a dedicated JSON parser, enforce input-size and nesting limits where available, and apply authentication, authorization, and schema validation after parsing.
Parsing versus validation
Parsing answers “Is this text valid JSON, and what value does it represent?” Validation answers “Does that value meet our application contract?” A parsed object can still lack a required field, contain the wrong type, violate a range, or include unexpected data. Perform schema or business-rule validation as a separate step, and report errors without logging secrets unnecessarily.
Streaming and tree-style parsing
A tree-style API returns one complete in-memory representation and is convenient for ordinary API payloads. An incremental or event-oriented API can process portions of a large document as they arrive, reducing peak memory, but requires more application logic. The JSON standard does not mandate either approach, so consult the library documentation before assuming behavior or performance.

“Unexpected token” or equivalent syntax error
Log the character position safely, inspect the preceding delimiter, and verify that names and strings use double quotes. Confirm that the response is actually JSON rather than an HTML error page.
Valid JSON but wrong values
Check duplicate names, number precision, null handling, and any post-parse conversion such as a reviver or custom decoder.
Parser is slow or crashes
Measure input size and nesting depth, impose limits, reject oversized requests before parsing, and consider an incremental API for genuinely large documents.

Different services disagree
Compare their documented extensions, duplicate-key policy, number model, ordering guarantees, and resource limits. Emit standard JSON with unique names and avoid relying on unspecified behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is JSON parsing the same as deserialization?
They overlap in everyday usage: parsing recognizes JSON text, while deserialization emphasizes converting it into application data. A library may use either term for the same API.
Can a JSON parser validate my API schema?
No. Parsing checks JSON syntax and produces a value. Use a separate schema or business-rule validator for required fields, types, ranges, and relationships.
Does every parser preserve object key order?
No. Object ordering and duplicate-name behavior can vary. Use arrays when order is part of the data contract.
