A PhantomJS screenshot that is blank, incomplete, transparent, or missing images is usually a load, JavaScript, network, geometry, or output-format problem—not a single “screenshot” switch. First verify the PhantomJS binary and version, record the exact page.open status, and add diagnostics for requests, timeouts, JavaScript exceptions, and console messages. Render only after a successful load. If the page uses browser features PhantomJS cannot support, the practical fix may be moving capture to a maintained browser rather than changing another legacy setting.
Start with a reproducible diagnosis
Do not change several settings at once. Record the operating system, the command line, target URL, output filename, viewport, PhantomJS version, and whether the problem affects every page or only one site. This separates an environment problem from a site-compatibility problem.
Confirm the executable and version
Run this in the same shell, container, service account, or scheduled job that performs the capture:
phantomjs --version
which phantomjs # Linux and macOS
where phantomjs # Windows
PhantomJS documentation warns that duplicate installations can cause a different binary to run than the one you expect. PhantomJS 2.1 is the latest stable release, and the project repository is archived; development is suspended. Keep the exact version in your incident notes instead of assuming every machine is running 2.1.

Classify the symptom
| Symptom | First checks |
|---|---|
| Blank or missing file | page.open status, early process exit, output path permissions, JavaScript errors |
| Incomplete page | resource requests and timeouts, asynchronous rendering, viewport or clip rectangle |
| Images or fonts missing | resource failures, HTTPS/SSL libraries, request headers, blocked domains |
| Transparent image | Document background CSS and output format |
| “Operation canceled” | Capture the literal status and network diagnostics; the historical phrase does not prove one universal cause |
Check page.open before calling page.render
The callback status is your first decision point. A script that renders after a failed load, or exits before the callback, can produce an empty or misleading artifact.
var page = require('webpage').create();
page.viewportSize = { width: 1366, height: 900 };
page.open('https://example.com', function (status) {
console.log('page.open status: ' + status);
if (status !== 'success') {
phantom.exit(1);
return;
}
page.render('capture.png');
phantom.exit(0);
});
Use success as the minimum condition, not as proof that every application task finished. A successful HTTP load can still precede client-side rendering, lazy images, or failed API calls. Add a site-specific readiness condition where necessary, then render.
Instrument requests, timeouts, and page code
See which resources are requested
page.onResourceRequested = function (request) {
console.log('REQUEST ' + request.id + ' ' + request.method + ' ' + request.url);
};
page.onResourceReceived = function (response) {
console.log('RESPONSE ' + response.status + ' ' + response.url);
};
Requests reveal a wrong URL, redirect, blocked asset, or a stylesheet/font that never arrives. Avoid logging credentials or sensitive query strings in shared build logs.
Find resources that stop waiting
page.settings.resourceTimeout = 30000;
page.onResourceTimeout = function (request) {
console.log('RESOURCE TIMEOUT id=' + request.id + ' url=' + request.url);
};
This timeout applies to an individual resource and, according to the API documentation, only during the initial page.open. It does not guarantee that a later single-page-app request has completed. If a page needs more time after the initial callback, use an explicit wait strategy rather than assuming a larger resource timeout solves it.

Capture JavaScript exceptions and console output
page.onError = function (message, trace) {
console.log('PAGE ERROR: ' + message);
trace.forEach(function (frame) {
console.log(' at ' + frame.file + ':' + frame.line);
});
};
page.onConsoleMessage = function (message, line, source) {
console.log('CONSOLE ' + source + ':' + line + ' ' + message);
};
Page console messages are not forwarded by default. Without this handler, a missing variable, unsupported API, or failed application request can look like a rendering defect.
Use the remote inspector when logs are insufficient
For deeper investigation, start PhantomJS with --remote-debugger-port=9000 and connect with a compatible WebKit inspector. Keep that port restricted to the diagnostic machine; do not expose it publicly.
Separate network and host-environment failures
When HTTP works but HTTPS does not
Check the SSL libraries used by the PhantomJS build, commonly OpenSSL, and confirm that the runtime can initialize them. Compare a simple HTTPS page with the failing target and inspect resource logs. Do not “fix” certificate problems by blindly disabling verification; that can hide the actual trust or library issue and weakens security.
Windows proxy delays
PhantomJS troubleshooting documentation notes that default proxy detection on Windows can introduce significant latency. As a diagnostic experiment, run with --proxy-type=none. If the page then loads, investigate the machine’s proxy or automatic-configuration settings and choose the policy appropriate for your network; this flag is not a universal production recommendation.

Linux security policies
SELinux can prevent PhantomJS from running or accessing required resources in constrained Linux environments. Review the denial records and the applicable policy with your system administrator. Do not disable SELinux broadly as a shortcut.
Fix rendering geometry and output settings
Viewport and clip rectangle
Set page.viewportSize before opening the page. A viewport controls layout; a clipRect controls the portion written to the image. A clip rectangle outside the rendered content can look like a blank capture even when the page loaded correctly.
page.viewportSize = { width: 1440, height: 1000 };
page.clipRect = { top: 0, left: 0, width: 1440, height: 1000 };
Remove the clip rectangle while diagnosing. Once the full viewport is visible, add clipping back with coordinates that match the document and the intended output.
Choose a format deliberately
page.render() selects a format from the filename extension. The documented formats include PDF, PNG, JPEG, BMP, PPM, and GIF, subject to the Qt build. JPEG quality changes visual quality. PNG quality is a compression setting; it does not make the rendered pixels sharper. Use a lossless format while troubleshooting, then optimize size after correctness is established.

Understand transparent screenshots
Transparency can be expected. PhantomJS leaves the page background to the document; if the page sets no background color, the result remains transparent. Set an explicit background when an opaque image is required:
page.evaluate(function () {
document.documentElement.style.backgroundColor = '#ffffff';
document.body.style.backgroundColor = '#ffffff';
});
Apply this only if it matches the visual result you need; forcing white can conceal a site’s intended transparent design.
Handle modern pages and asynchronous content
PhantomJS is a headless browser built around WebKit, but its archived 2.1-era engine has a compatibility ceiling. Unsupported JavaScript syntax, APIs, CSS, TLS behavior, or browser assumptions can leave a page partly rendered even when your script is correct. Treat this as a hypothesis to test, not proof from a single blank image.
Wait for a meaningful condition
Prefer a selector that proves the page is ready over an arbitrary delay. For example, poll for #report and cap the wait so a broken page fails clearly:

- Blank output: verify the callback reaches
success, keep the process alive until rendering completes, removeclipRect, and check the output directory is writable. - Partial layout: wait for a readiness selector, inspect
onResourceTimeout, and check JavaScript exceptions before increasing delays. - Missing images or fonts: confirm requests and responses, test HTTPS separately, and verify that required headers or cookies are present.
- Operation canceled: preserve the exact status, URL, and request log. Investigate timeouts, redirects, SSL, and process termination rather than assigning a cause from the phrase alone.
- Transparent image: inspect computed background styles and set an explicit document background if opacity is required.
- Works locally, fails in CI: compare the resolved executable, PhantomJS version, proxy, SSL libraries, fonts, filesystem permissions, and security policy.
Decide whether continued repair is worthwhile
The PhantomJS repository was archived read-only on May 30, 2023, identifies 2.1 as the latest stable release, and states: “Important: PhantomJS development is suspended until further notice.” If diagnostics show a correctly configured script but a current site still depends on unsupported browser behavior, compare the cost of preserving the legacy runtime with a maintained browser or hosted workflow. Evaluate CSS and JavaScript compatibility, local control versus hosted execution, visibility into network and browser errors, setup and maintenance, and whether sending public or authenticated URLs to a service meets your data requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I increase PhantomJS’s timeout first?
No. First determine whether the resource is requested, whether it times out, and whether page JavaScript throws an exception. A larger timeout cannot add support for an incompatible browser API.
Why does a successful page.open still produce an unfinished screenshot?
The callback indicates the initial load result, not that every asynchronous application task has completed. Wait for a page-specific selector or other readiness signal before rendering.
Can I make a transparent PhantomJS screenshot opaque after rendering?
Set the document or body background before calling page.render. Editing the finished bitmap is a separate image-processing step and does not explain why the page had no background.
The Bottom Line
Collect version, status, request, timeout, JavaScript, and console evidence in that order. Then correct the specific network, timing, geometry, or background issue—or acknowledge PhantomJS’s compatibility ceiling and move capture to a maintained workflow.
